The Femninist Abortion Network (FAN) is comprised of independent feminist clinics around the country that provide quality and compassionate medical care in the communities they serve.
FAN also works to educate and increase the public's awareness of women's rights to reproductive health and
the public policies affecting these rights. FAN is a great organization. FAN clinics "trust women" to make decisions when facd with an unplanned pregnancy.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how the women who use our services are thankful that they have access to a safe, legal pregnancy termination and reproductive health care they so deserve.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

encourage people to donate to feminist clinics and make abortion more accessible by repealing the restrictive laws that are being passed all over this country.

FAN is a great organization. The leadership of these independent women's health clinics provide outstanding services, care deeply about their patients access to quality affordable health care, and respect women's ability to make sound decisions.

I am a long-time patient and supporter of one of the clinics and have been impressed with how well the organization adapts to meet the health needs of the surrounding community

I would change federal legislation so that these clinics were able to be on a level playing field with other health providers. Abortion is a medical procedure and should not be singled-out. These clinics serve men, women, and children through a variety of medical services and abortion carey deserves access to the same federal dollars as any other health need.

Having worked at a Feminist Women's Health Center for 25 years I am deeply greatful for FAN. FAN provides a sounding board, a safe haven and continues to put forth information regarding Feminist Health Care and abortion provision.
Feminist clinics that provide abortion care are a critical
aspect of reproductive health care.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my interactions with clients who recognize the benefits of Feminist Health Care provision.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

encourage others to support it financially. We really won't have "choices" if we don't have "choices" about where to get health care. There are only 14 remaining FAN clinics.

I first became aware of the Federation of FWHC's in college. They seemed to be the ones always "doing" something rather than just talking. The Feminist clinics published books, offered educatational programs, taught us how to have an impact on public policies that seemed to ignore our needsand , basically, hold the health care system AND the government institutions accountable for listening to women and assuring our needs are at least taken into consideration. It's hard to imagine that women wouldn't even be included in clinical trials on female hormones to learn the effect on female bodies! They were quite brave then, and now, so it seems appropriate to begin with an expression of appreciation. Thanks to y'all for clearing my path to self help, better health services, a safe place for "truth telling" and a good place to refer patients TODAY! I look to you to keep me informed.

That said, it distresses me to see some of the clinics closing their doors. If we allow this to happen, there are some doors that just can't be replaced. I really don't want to go back to the assembly line and being told what's good for me. As a community, we need to support our local feminist clinics and as donors - we need to donate monthly to assure this organization founded specificaaly to assure FWHC's clinics stay accessible and the individualized health care that respects me (and others) in all the ways that matter.

Like me, many have likely personally experienced the benefits of accurate labels & inserts with medications that allow us to be informed of contraindications and side effects. I've also used a cervical cap when there were no other contraceptive devices other than the pill within my reach. I enjoy being able to refer clients knowing they will either recieve excellent care or be heard clearly if there's a problem. Your newsletters and education keep me informed and vigilant - a trustworthy resource.

I would ask them to get their message out to more people about all of their services - not just the ones that are controversial. It would be good if they were included in United Way & Federal campaigns. Could you publish another book and build more clinics? It might also be good to have a blog about advocating for ourselves and others.

Feminist Abortion Network, FAN, clinics across the country were founded in the early years after Roe v Wade by feminists who wanted to make sure their local community had abortion care. It was different back in those days, the 1970's, only the Planned Parenthoods in big cities offered abortion. FAN members brought abortion to small and medium size towns. Grassroots, early feminism. The kind that said: we need an abortion clinic in our community, and then set out to make it happen, without asking anyone's permission. FAN clinics were founded on a shoe-string, but with sky-high commitment to supporting women's choices and making care accessible to all. Which is still true today. Honoring and Trusting Women is what happens every day inside the clinics operated by the 14 FAN members, the 14 nonprofit feminist abortion providing organizations in 12 states across the country.

FAN's leaders, staff, supporters and clients believe in each woman's ability to make her own decisions about pregnancy, pregnancy prevention, reproduction, sexuality and her body.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

If I had the resources (which I don't), I would contribute $500,000 to each of the FAN member organizations for investing in changes that would strengthen each organization for the future. Because of the way health care reform worked out with its ban on abortion inclusion, I fear for the future of independent nonprofit feminist abortion providers, and for women's freedom.

The Feminist Abortion Network, or FAN, is a collective of the Fourteen remaining non-profit feminist based abortion care providers in the US. The work of these providers in their communities in providing patient centered care is the historical roots of feminist health care. The scope of care delivery for each clinic is based in specific community needs and culminates in a national impact on quality abortion care.

Due to the lack of a national presence for these independent feminist clinics, FAN was formed to represent the unique strengths, tenacity and diversity of these providers in the larger ecosystem of abortion care providers. Many of the original feminist clinics that opened in the early seventies to address the lack of abortion care post Roe v. Wade have closed over the years. FAN is committed to keeping our remaining member clinics open to serve the true needs of the vulnerable and historically marginalized communities, still not adequately served in our country. And to represent our consituents on a national level

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Since working together with FAN to collaberate, create national strategies and to share resources we have more of a sense of the feminist roots that have initiated and sustained abortion care access to marginalized populations. The formation of FAN is fairly new, but the ideals and values among the members are the true basis of reproductive justice and the inspiration to many who have worked in this area of health care for decades.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Because the tasks of running clinics that provide abortion care can be all consuming in this political climate, FAN would benefit from having resources and personnel to focus specifically on the collective activities. Currently it requires additional work on the part of clinic staff to carry out FAN efforts, and can place a strain on these smaller organizational structures.
