When moving to Katy, TX from Virginia, I was quite overwhelmed. The educational process in Texas is very different than in Virginia and Family to Family helped by having many discussions on the phone, meeting in person to go over IEP forms. They send out many e-mails regarding upcoming events that help parents stay in the loop regarding special education in Texas. Wonderful group of people.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... Assisting with my move from Virginia to Texas and helping me get my feet on the ground with my child's IEP.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Teach Katy, Texas what true inclusion philosophy is and each child with special needs would be in a general education classroom with all the supports they would need to be successful.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Getting the true meaning of inclusion out to the community.

I was new to town and overwhelmed with school issues for my child with Asperger's. The staff at F2F were always kind, caring and supportive. They gave me alot of info. and usually had an answer to every question that I had! What an amazing organization.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... helping me as a parent navigate the bewildering world of autsim.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The personal attention from the staff and the lending library. I also liked the monthly info. meetings back when they had them.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Moms that also had children with disabilities - NO ONE can understand your concerns if they do not have a child with a disability, no matter how sympathetic they are. It really helps having someone that can say, "i've been there too and it will be ok!"
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Schedule more get-to-gethers with the families doing fun things.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... Maybe get the monthly (bi-monthly) meetings up again, with a guest speaker and then a Q & A time.

I am a special education supervisor and arranged for Family to Family to provide a series of free parent trainings for the district. The sessions were extremely well received by the parents who attended. Mary Jane and the rest of her team did a beautiful job of supporting parents, providing valuable (and accurate) information about special education, and encouraging communication/ collaboration between parents and the school.

The Great!
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... committed to helping parents help their children.
Ways to make it better!
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... funding.

BEST THING IN TEXAS!!! F2F HELPED ME, A PROFESSIONAL SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER FROM OK., NAVIGATE THE TX SYSTEM TO EVENTUALLY HELP ME TO GET THE APPRPPRIATE SERVICES FOR MY DAUGHTER. SHE HAS SIGNIFICANT LEARNING DIDSABILITIES BUT HAS A GIFT WORKING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN. HER GOAL: WORK AT A DAYCARE CENTER AND SOME DAY OWN HER OWN. THE OUTCOME WAS A SERIES OF CLASSES THAT ENABLED HER TO "WOW" POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS WITH HER RESUME! SHE WAS HIRED BY THE 2ND CHILDCARE COMPANY SHE INTERVIEWED WITH AND, NOW 8 YEARS LATER, 2009, SHE SEES HER DREAM AS A REALITY. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, F2F!!!!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... learning the TX system of special education
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The help, support & information provided that eventually launched my daughter's career.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Committed, knowledgable & totally dedicated due to their child's negative school district experiences due in part to their child[ren]'s disabilities.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... It could expand what it does best: empower parents to help their children who have disabilities!!!!!
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I truly cannot imagine it being better!!
  • If I ran this organization, I would... It needs to expend in a timely fashion to help even more people in different localities w/i Houston.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... Finances for service delivery, staffing and expansion of actual physical layout.
  • One thing I'd also say is that... I hope that F2F never has to close its doors...it is too valuable and life changing for the parents which results in life changing outcomes for the children.

I first became aware of F2F from my son's OT when he was around 1 year old. At the time, I did not understand how important this organization would become to our family. The first thing we did was sign up for a family friend. Carolyn came out to meet us and was so warm and friendly. She got us the perfect family friend, Ms. Reggie. Oh, how we love her! She was so good with my son, and I loved having her around as a friend too. I got on the email list a few years ago and that's where I learned about so many events going on in Houston for people with disabilities. I found out about the fun day in the fall at Lone Star College, attended a workshop to help my son with fine motor skills, went to an ARD preparation meeting to help with the beginning of school, found out about a sports organization through which I found out about a place where my son could receive therapy (and we both love it!), gave my son his first opportunity to participate in a walk-run to help support f2f, and finally....the Lil' Rustler Rodeo. I cannot even begin to tell you how much that event meant to him. He thought he was king of the show that day. He was so proud to be with all of the other kids, his buddies were fabulous, and he wore his belt buckle given to him for about 2 weeks straight (shorts, jeans, didn't matter). He loved it when people mentioned how big his buckle was and "You are definitely a real cowboy" comments. We are so grateful to Family to Family Network. It's a giant algorithm where one good opportunity leads to another. Sincerely, Tina Hill

  • I've seen the results of this organization in... being prepared for my son's first ARD. I felt like I knew what was going on and wasn't confused by the jargon.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... there is always something to be a part of...for mom/dad, the child, or the whole family.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Incredibly helpful with anything and everything pertaining to my child with a disability.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... build a huge facility with an indoor gigantic park accessible for all, with all sorts of therapists there (air conditioning!), and college kids going into education there to help out with the kids while parents attended meetings.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... na
  • If I ran this organization, I would... na
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... I don't really know, but I'm pretty certain the recession is the biggest challenge.
