The Family Place Retail Store is a venue that allows concerned citizens a way to donate person articles and volunteer hours to increase store funds and reduce shop expenses. Cash donations are not required for supporters to make a difference in helping others in need of family counseling and protection.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

donating articles and underwriting volunteer appreciation nights.

The family place is fantastic, most people think of them because of the great service they do for domestic violence, but they also have an excellent group of therapists dedicated to helping incest survivors. I was raped by my Dad and found so much comfort in joing a group of other women who had gone through the same thing. They taught us about boundaries, relationships, how to stand up for ourselves, say no and a million other things.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Being able to set boundaries, have confidence, not feel so alone, have a support system, a saftey plan, tell my secret.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Have more counselors and more groups. It took me a while to get into the group and they are often very crowded.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The support, feedback, honesty and help they provided when I felt sad, lonely and suicidal

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Counselors and interns

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Hire more staff to help children who are growing up in !&%^$! and domestic abuse families, provide housing for women, provide more phone support, face to face counseling, more !&%^$! recovery groups, more education and awareness

Ways to make it better...

The group was smaller.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Lack of funding and a growing problem

One thing I'd also say is that...

I am grateful to everyone who helped me.

As a domestic violence survivor, I spent five years in both private and group therapy to understand what I had been through, identify ways in which I could avoid future abuse, and improve my self-image, as well as understand my PTSD and work through it . I was taken care of so well, and I was supported through many situations. The Family place were counselors and advocates to me in a time of great need and I will always be grateful to them for helping me and my family.

I have been a client at TFP for 9 years. My 1st contact with TFP was on a weekend night. My then husband was beating me. I grabbed my baby, the phone, and a phone book. S.G. answered the phone and to this day is my advocate and therapist... I began counseling with a wonderful therapist in 2001. TFP helped me make a plan to leave. Eventually, I (along with my young child) was able to get away from my abuser (2003) and we divorced in 2004. TFP provided additional services. They helped me with career goals, provided transitional housing, and therapy for my child. Less than 1 year after my divorce, at the end of 2004, my abusers started abusing me through the family courts. I went back to TFP and they welcomed me with open arms. To this day I am still desperately trying to protect my daughter and myself due to the forced litigation of my abuser and a family court system which enables him. My counselor and the director of TFP have spent weeks in court testifying and being there for support during 5 1/2 years of court litigation. They have spent countless hours helping me find specialized resources, court watch, providing counseling which helps me cope with this nightmare, and many other things. TFP's job doesn't end once the victim leaves. Once upon a time, perhaps. Abusers have now made TFP's job much harder since they (abuser) have figured out how they can continue the reign of terror after divorce by using the family court. There is a whole new level of support that now must be made available for women and children. I have several amazing support systems in place and TFP is one of them. I sometimes wonder if I didn't have the TFP...would my daughter and I even be alive?

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

- preserving my well being through therapy. - having a free place to live while going through extreme trauma during litigation and being unable to work. - an amazing amount of support from TFP when others walked away. They never blame the victim.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

- wish more money could be earmarked by government funding for TFP to be able to help. - want to be able to FILL courtrooms with court watch each time a victim needed it for judicial and system accountability.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They have never blamed me and are most supportive of my daughters and my situation.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

non judgmental, compassionate, willing to help, and interested in what I had to say.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

- provide services for thousands more in need. - have a dedicated staff to provide court watch and then report how the judges behave. - provide legal representation for protective mothers. - organize silent vigils to stop family court abuse.

Ways to make it better...

there is nothing that would have made my experience better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

overcoming and educating a system that is failing abused women and children. I know how frustrating it is when the people (court, CAC, police, court appointed people, ADA, CPS) in position to help victims, fail them.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I am grateful to those at The Family Place who have stood by me and my daughter for many years.

The Family Place provides over 150,000 service hours each year, shelters over 1,000 women, children and men, and provides transitional housing to nearly 200 women and children. When families are in the care of The Family Place, they strive to meet all of their needs – housing, food, medicine, education, just to name the major ones. Through intervention, emergency shelter, and crisis counseling for all victims—women, children and men— The Family Place saves lives and through transitional housing and case management, The Family Place transforms lives for the better. I am currently a Board Member of The Family Place, and have been for five years. The dedication and perseverance of Paige Flink, the Executive Director, and the entire staff of The Family Place to make a difference in the lives of our citizens is extraordinary. They are exemplary stewards of the resources they obtain, providing comprehensive, quality services to remarkable numbers of people.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've heard many clients talk about how their lives and the lives of their children were first saved, and then changed forever for the better. I have seen the children smiling and playing instead of being trapped in a terrorizing situation.

The Family Place is the flagship domestic violence shelter in Dallas. They do an outstanding job of not only housing domestic violence victims, but of offering intensive supportive services to help them take care of themselves and their children. Further, TFP offers outreach and counseling services throughout Dallas for victims AND offenders. They definitely deserve 5 stars!

I started going to the Family Place for their incest recovery counseling services several years ago. The Family Place and their incest recovery counselors have helped me to change my life for the better. The counselors are experts at helping people who were sexually abused. (Other counselors I tried were not nearly as effective, I think because they don't have the incest-specific training.) They helped me to learn to take care of myself, and how to know who to trust and when. I am much happier and more confident today as a result.
