"Building Confident Families" provides adults and children with skills proven to help them prevent child abuse and neglect in their homes. This seven-session, fourteen hour family strengthening course teaches members of at-risk families ways to cope with stress, manage anger, and resolve conflict. Parents learn how to discipline children without using punishment. Typically, adults and children first receive instruction focused on enhancing their relationships and communication skills in separate, age and developmentally appropriate classrooms. Then, near the end of program sessions, family members come together to practice their new skills. “Building Confident Families” is taught in a “Full Family”, a “Half Family” and a “Parents Only” format in English, Spanish and Chinese languages. The course is delivered "on-site" at ESCAPE's facility located in central Houston and "off-site" in many facilities operated by of our 92 collaborators.

My YES Prep student service group recently volunteered at ESCAPE, and I was impressed for many reasons. Sandi Mercado, the executive assistant, was extremely organized. As soon as our students showed up, she had kid friendly tasks for them to complete. Additionally, she treated our students with the utmost respect. Our students were able to decorate banners for the marathon group running on behalf of learntoparent.org. Through the extremely well planned service project, students were able to learn about the importance of ESCAPE. As a teacher, I would be excited to have our students volunteer here again.
