Mission: Equilibrium Dynamics (EQD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching adults and children how to build a life in which feelings empower, rather than sabotage relationships, activities and careers. Everbody has feelings. But not everybody is familiar with the fundamental principles and basic dynamics of those feelings. We teach key aspects of feelings as well as the related skills and strategies for managing them.  These topics are commonly known as emotional intelligence (EQ), emotional competence or Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Research indicates that these skills and strategies empower students for success whenever they are applied. Goals: - Empower individuals to reach highest realistic goals in academic achievements, occupations, and healthy living in functional families. - Increase public awareness and practice of emotional competence skills to create thriving institutions and safe neighborhoods with community participation for the common good. - Partner with others for maximum impact and efficiency, putting emotional competence into practice. - Contribute to the knowledge and experience in this field and our own effectiveness through ongoing evaluation of our programs.
Results: The EQD curriculum for teaching emotional intelligence has been proven success rating. 91% of those who have taken a course found it valuable. 92% learned something they can use. 89% learned something to help them meet their professional and personal responsibilities.
Target demographics: Low income, Minorities, Educators, Health Care Professionals, General population
Geographic areas served: San Francisco, Bay Area and Beyond
Programs: *Introductory lectures and seminars, for health organizations, high school students & faculty, and corporations e.g. San Francisco and Sonoma county high schools, California; Northern California Psychiatric Society; UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Care Center, medical students & faculty; SNMA medical students. *Parent workshops to improve family dynamics & communications and support student performance, e.g. PreCollege Programs at Sonoma State; *Partnerships with universities, colleges and other organizations to provide emotional competence workshops to empower participants to improve their performance through selected skills training and consultations e.g. HBCs, nationally; Kent State, OH; Sonoma State, CA. *Training seminars for counselors, therapists and teachers, etc. interested in learning the comprehensive emotional competence curriculum as a foundation for emotional competence skills development. *Development of teaching materials and resources for use with high school, college and medical students, parents, professionals and others. *Research & evaluation to assess impact and improve outcomes for teachers and students in our programs.

The training course in emotional competency training was superb! It had solid foundation and was very practical and pragmatic. I use what I learned all the time in my practice.

At our request, Drs. Flowers and Thomas-Squance provided a well-written, comprehensive article about their work for an educational publication distributed to postgradutate medical trainees. We were hoping to give our readers some basic information about the field and it's utility in their clinical practices. The article far exceeded expectations by being concise, organized, on-target, and very interesting. We expect a great deal of positive feed-back about their disciplne and their program.

Equilibrium Dynamics (EquiD) is an amazing program that focuses on helping clients learn emotional competence for primarily young adults (teenage, college students). The program developed by Dr. Loma Flowers, provides the tools necessary to enable people to be able to express feelings, emotions in a clear, concise manner and fosters more mature relationships. Our current educational system ignores this important concept. This would be a valuable program to incorporate into all levels of our educational system.

Dr. Flowers did an amazing job in sharing the ideals of the program during our trainings and how to influence students and individuals I work with in higher education. The lessons of Equilibrium Dynamics provided very valuable skills that I share with students I work with and even professionals in the field. Definitely a useful tool for a variety of fields.

Equilibrium Dynamics provided me with a number of tools and resources to better assist my students as an educator. I really appreciated the services provided to better understand the importance and role of feeling management and understanding the differences that make each individual unique and different. As an educator, it was definitely a tool that I have recommended to other colleagues looking to better serve their students as well as themselves.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

how I approach my students and the organizations I advise.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

have more time spent on dream analysis with outside participants.

Dr. Flowers is a pioneer and such a gifted speaker and educator. I found her and her EQD team to be diverse, dedicated, expert, and very approachable. They are so skilled in the personal and professional exploration of emotional competence, and really getting at the application of those skills in "real world" life experience. Their message is so universal - a real asset to the individual, the professional, young, old, schools, corporate groups... I am so happy to have been able to participate in their program!

The clarity and practical principles of EQD are highly valuable and life changing. I participated in a 6-month Emotional Competence Certified Training course, and immediately experienced positive professional and personal results. Dr. Flower's has developed a hands-on, and broadly applicable curriculum, which resonates for people of all ages and walks of life. EQD is truly amazing. I have and will continue to highly recommend EQD to anyone.

EQD provided me with important and essential concepts that have helped improve, not only the quality of my own professional and personal life, but provided me with no areas of focus that I could pass along in my work with patients. Dr. Flowers presentation of material is not only engaging, but practical. Everyone I have ever met that has experienced EQD or Dr. Flowers comments on how positive and influential that time has been. I highly recommend EQD to anyone who thinks their personal or professional life could use a little more emotional competence. And if you don't think you could use that, then you probably need it even more than most!!

On six occasions during the last twelve years, Dr Flowers has been invited to spend ten days at Eton College in order to help members of the teaching staff to deliver the Personal, Social, and Health Education programme to students between the ages of 13 and 18. We have been inspired by her teaching and by her ability both to communicate and to model empathy. Her talk to sixteen-year-olds on “Growing into Responsible Adulthood” made a very powerful impact on the students. In a series of seminars, she also talked to our senior students about the responsibilities and challenges of leadership.
In addition, Dr Flowers made herself available for one-to-one and small-group consultations with adult members of the community. This opportunity was taken up by a good number of people, who found their conversations about specific issues, personal and professional, to be of enormous value.

Nicholas Welsh, Head of the Personal, Social, and Health Education Programme at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.

I have known Dr. Flowers for over 25 years at the University of California, San Francisco and often invite her to present workshops. Since she began focusing Equilibrium Dynamics, I have been incredibly impressed with her work on emotional intelligence and the adept way she encourages people to recognize their feelings at work. Dr.Flowers is a very effective educator and presents her material in a non-judgemental and accessible way. She serves as an outstanding role model and always receives the highest kudos from workshop participants.
