Mission: Equilibrium Dynamics (EQD) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching adults and children how to build a life in which feelings empower, rather than sabotage relationships, activities and careers. Everbody has feelings. But not everybody is familiar with the fundamental principles and basic dynamics of those feelings. We teach key aspects of feelings as well as the related skills and strategies for managing them.  These topics are commonly known as emotional intelligence (EQ), emotional competence or Social Emotional Learning (SEL).  Research indicates that these skills and strategies empower students for success whenever they are applied. Goals: - Empower individuals to reach highest realistic goals in academic achievements, occupations, and healthy living in functional families. - Increase public awareness and practice of emotional competence skills to create thriving institutions and safe neighborhoods with community participation for the common good. - Partner with others for maximum impact and efficiency, putting emotional competence into practice. - Contribute to the knowledge and experience in this field and our own effectiveness through ongoing evaluation of our programs.
Results: The EQD curriculum for teaching emotional intelligence has been proven success rating. 91% of those who have taken a course found it valuable. 92% learned something they can use. 89% learned something to help them meet their professional and personal responsibilities.
Target demographics: Low income, Minorities, Educators, Health Care Professionals, General population
Geographic areas served: San Francisco, Bay Area and Beyond
Programs: *Introductory lectures and seminars, for health organizations, high school students & faculty, and corporations e.g. San Francisco and Sonoma county high schools, California; Northern California Psychiatric Society; UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Care Center, medical students & faculty; SNMA medical students. *Parent workshops to improve family dynamics & communications and support student performance, e.g. PreCollege Programs at Sonoma State; *Partnerships with universities, colleges and other organizations to provide emotional competence workshops to empower participants to improve their performance through selected skills training and consultations e.g. HBCs, nationally; Kent State, OH; Sonoma State, CA. *Training seminars for counselors, therapists and teachers, etc. interested in learning the comprehensive emotional competence curriculum as a foundation for emotional competence skills development. *Development of teaching materials and resources for use with high school, college and medical students, parents, professionals and others. *Research & evaluation to assess impact and improve outcomes for teachers and students in our programs.

My program encourages under-represented master's students of color on to the doctorate. We have been extraordinarily successful, particularly since we now include Dr. Flowers and Equilibrium Dynamics as an integral part of our work. In particular, we hold a doctoral student retreat for our alumni that attracts doctoral students of color from around the country. It is mainly centered on Dr. Flowers' philosophy and strategies for coping and thriving. The participants love it and report being renewed and more confident about completing their degrees!

Equilibrium Dynamics provided excellent and professional trainings to our school. They were a very well-run organization that made it easy to communicate with and get set up with a training that fit our students' needs. Thank you, EQ, for your generosity and sharing your knowledge with our community!

Dr Flowers was an essential piece in the NP residency to help me recognize the skills in my toolbox, to optimize my emotional competency, and in term improve patient care outcomes in the community. - Bahare

Dr. Flowers and the EQD team has improved my organization's capacity to serve young people and their families. We partnered with EQD for several years to educate and train our young people, their parents and the program staff. Our clients experienced growth and transformation in each session- I can't remember any wasted time! The unexpected gift of the relationship is that I believe I received more than the clients in my own personal development. If I could, I would have them for personal/professional coaching on a weekly basis. Thank you Equilibirum Dynamics!

Dr. Flowers and Equilibrium Dynamics helped our large, diverse public health center staff productively discuss issues relating to workplace safety and group cohesion during a full day retreat. Her intelligent and skillful approach helped everybody feel well heard and encouraged productive engagement/discussion. The positive impact has helped us to make needed changes and build a healthier community.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None come to mind.

I'm a recent participant in a 6-month training with Equilibrium Dynamics on Emotional Competency. This program has exceeded my expectations for several reasons. First, the tools offered are extremely practical and the training provides a platform for learning how to employ the tools for the right situation. I always leave the training with a few key phrases or concepts that can help guide me in staying grounded and evaluating my circumstances in a way that will help me make choices for the best outcomes. Second, Dr. Loma Flowers, who facilitates the training, brings a wealth of experience and also very hands-on, practical perspectives on emotional competency. I don't have a background or formal training in psychology, thus the practical approach is helpful to me. Finally, I find the supportive nature of the class environment extremely helpful for me in dissecting scenarios and situations in my own life to learn and become more emotionally competent. We all have a chance to share on the topics being discussed, which I find helpful. I learn from dissecting my own experiences as well as hearing from others and helping them dissect their scenarios as well. This is extremely valuable training for those who are leadership roles professionally, or who simply want to have mastery over their own lives.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Get the word out about this training! It's incredibly valuable and needed in the world, particularly with organizational leaders or people who do a lot of inter-personal work.

I am writing to give my comment of Equilibrium Dymanics. I have been to 3+ of their various workshops and feel that my option is valid and significant. Their workshops are great and no matter how many that I go to they are always helpful and insiteful into me understanding more about myself and emotional development. Dr. Flowers and her staff really care and are professional women who are very pleasent and not only work well with other people (of any age and background), Flowers experience lends her to enable people to open up and feel safe in group settings. From Stress management to (3)Emotional Balance any and everyone would benefit from their services and I am proud to be apart of it and hope to see it expand!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

(2)San Fransisco, (2)Berkeley,

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

(and how more support to do this) do free workshops for various student group and invite other students to come to the session to recruit College students (because when you get them on board, you also get them when they GROW UP and REALLY need HELP.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Having someone do a step by step walk with me through the emotional process of my life that I would have never thought about on my own.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Dr. Flowers, forgot the other 2 women names (sorry).

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

spread the word, write books, do articles in famous magazines, do a tv show, make dvds, make youtube videos, hold monthly workshops at UCs and states, they could train and expand their volunteer/paid-work force.

Ways to make it better...

More friends and family could have enjoyed the experience with me.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial support to keep it running long and strong and SPREADING THE WORD.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I love EQDynamics!
