My now 34 year old daughter began riding in a therapeutic riding program 22 years ago. I was so impressed with the positive results that she achieved from her riding! Strength, coordination, balance...... and most importantly, the gumption to "be in charge", "be the leader" in order to direct the 1/2 ton animal that she was riding. I found Equi-Ed and began volunteering for them. As a NARHA Premier Accredited program, Equi-Ed taught me how to provide safe and fun horsemanship and riding lessons to people with specal needs. After 10+ years with Equi-Ed and after moving to another state, I have now begun a small therapeutic riding program here, and every day count my blessings for having been "brought up" by such a wonderful program as Equi-Ed, which has now given me the skills to carry on in serving more people with special needs.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

My daughter has Down Syndrome and is deaf. She rode with Equi-Ed, and I am proud to say that she has lived independently for 8 years! I attribute her independence to her exposure and relationship with horses through Equi-Ed.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them a home of their own, with classrooms and a covered arena so that they could continue to support the community of people interested in learning more about therapeutic riding...... potential instructors, volunteers, and of course, in serving more riders.

I have been involved in the field of therapeutic riding since 1998 and I have been involved with Equi-Ed as a staff member since 2003. What has kept me here so long you may ask? An amazing community of people-volunteers, fellow staff, parents and students! I am so privileged to be a part of this organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

This program not only helps to enrich the lives of those with special needs, but has touched my life in ways I never thought possible.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

want to increase the funding the program receives so all students, regardless of financial means, could receive lessons year round, full time.

What impresses me most about Equi-Ed is the level of dedication and commitment demonstrated by our staff and our cadre of volunteers (many of whom are teenagers!). No detail is left to chance when it comes to supporting our students and taking care of our horses. Each student, most of whom are children, is given the respect and encouragement they deserve and treated as an individual with their own level of abilities and needs. Our instructors amaze me in their knack for challenging, yet supporting each student and the results are there to see. As a volunteer, I work with students weekly and their progress in confidence and ability is plain to see. As a board member, I am privileged to work with such a group of dedicated, caring people and look forward to serving our community to an even greater extent in the years to come!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the confidence, strength and balance that our students develop - actual change can be seen on a weekly basis! And the smiles are great!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

recruit board members with resources in the community to expand development and marketing and remove some of these responsibilities from the current staff.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

how much all of the staff and volunteers care about the program, the students and the horses. They want to get it right!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

energetic, smart, caring and dedicated.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

create a facility that would allow us to have lessons year round, in any weather. It would allow us to hire management staff so that the instructors could concentrate more on program development.

Ways to make it better...

I was trained as a therapist and instructor! (Who knows, maybe a second career!)

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

meeting the needs of the future; how Equi-Ed will find the resources to develop its program and facilities to supply the needs of our community for therapeutic riding services.

One thing I'd also say is that...

running a therapeutic riding program is very hard work! I very much respect and appreciate all the effort and care put in by our staff and volunteers. Thank you!

Equi-Ed is an amazing program that really cares about the students, horses, and volunteers. Everyone feels welcome and it's amazing to watch as the students progress and learn. Equi-Ed is not only a great non-profit, it's a great family!

This therapeutic riding program is so important to people with disabilities, like me. I'm a paraplegic that has been in a wheelchair since 1980, from a car accident. I used to ride horses when I was a kid and loved it! This program not only allows me to enjoy being on a horse, but insures a safe and enjoyable riding environment. Therapeutic riding at Equi-Ed, not only lifts my spirits, I get health benefits too!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the horses, staff and volunteers are top notch; always there to support and create an enjoyable experience.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

kind, experienced and reliable.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

design and operate its own stables, provide the newest technology in riding gear and accessories. Offer more classes to the public. Most importantly, to purchase a dedicated horse so I could compete internationally in para-equestrian events.
