If you wanted to set the bar for an organization with the highest impact per-capita staff member, EESI is it. With a small but eminently qualified, competent and passionate staff, EESI manages to do the thankless work on educating Congress that may literally define U.S. environmental health for generations to come. My students and I have worked with EESI on a number of energy-related issues over the last five years. The experience has been nothing short excellent, both for me as an advisor, and for the students as participants in civic engagement. EESI is truly one of the GREAT nonprofits.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None, aside from figuring out a way to endow funds in perpetuity.

I've worked with EESI in a number of capacities, as a former Senate staffer and now as an academic in science policy. Aside from providing an amazing breadth of educational opportunities for those most intimately connected with energy and environmental policymaking, EESI has both vision and competence with shockingly small but hardworking staff. In my most recent association with EESI, Carol Werner and Ellen Vaughan teamed up with a small group of my students to conduct original research on how small businesses view energy efficiency. With EESI's mentoring, the students presented the data to senators and staffers, who used the findings as the basis of letters to several federal agencies. It was a project that not only influenced policy, but the lives and careers of several students. How they find the time and energy to educate Congress AND the rest of us, I'll never know. Hands-down, EESI is among the most engaged and dedicated organization among its peers.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Several professional contexts, as a staffer and as an academic working on policy.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Increase staff size (not too much; bigger isn't always better).

EESI does an excellent job of providing solid information about environmental and energy issues that are beeing debated at teh Congressoinal levels. The panels they put together to discuss these issues are wll balance and invariably include experts in the field. They are an asset in Washington!

EESI utilizes a variety of different means to draw attention to important environmental issues facing this country and possible solutions. Through congressional briefings, this year's very successful and informative Energy Expo, fact sheets, and Climate Change News, they work to fulfill their organization's mission. Those working at EESI are both passionate and informed about these issues and always teach me something new, when I have the pleasure of speaking with them.

I have benefited from EESI since the 1980s, when their "green sheets" were the definitive source of information for everything environment and energy-related in Congress, and their briefings on climate change and other topics were the most informative, and balanced, in Washington. As an advocate for renewable energy and my clients who research and develop renewable energy, I know we have all accomplished more and been more effective because we were armed with information from EESI, and because EESI was also educating decisonmakers. Renewable energy has come a long way since the 1980s, and so has EESI. May EESI continue its work for many more.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Advocating for renewable energy legislation and policies.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them more resources and put them on more media.

For more than five years, I have been attending the Energy and Environment Study Institute (EESI) Capitol Hill's Seminars and Conferences. They are well thought out, hosted, and attended. The accomodations and hospitality are excellent! When I chance to speak with other professionals at these events, they are some of the Energy and Environmental Industry's most talented, and connected. The topics could be ripped from the headlines of the major issues of the day, as our world is forced to deal with the environmental pressures of approximately seven billion people. The integration of these issues with our country's legislative and executive branches of government lend the gatherings a sense that these issues will be dealt with intelligently and forthrightly. Even when I am unable to attend, the EESI staff and professionals offer me the seminar materials in a very easy to access web-based, downloadable format so I might stay current on the issue at hand. The good people at EESI are friendly, courteous, professional and made-to-order for the perfectly insane pace of a world in which we live. I highly recommend the EESI organization, its direction and its excellent professionals.

As a climate activist, I find EESI's Climate News indispensable for my work. I do a lot of publicity for climate abatement, and I quote new and valuable information from CN every time I present. I also post news from CN on my community's "Climate" bulletin board and update it every week.

In short, it's an invaluable resource.

I think EESI is one of the most effective groups on Capitol Hill. They rely on credible scientific information to make the case for solid policy. I have worked in energy policy for many years and I turn to EESI for information because I know I can find the latest developments from the nation's experts in the field.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing the huge respect they engender on and off the Hill as a practical source of valuable science as it related to public policy

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them secure funding so they can focus on doing their important work
