Mission: Emmanuel House is a Spiritual Formation Center that is committed to developing reflective, missional leaders through classes, retreats and personal Spiritual Direction. Our goal is to partner with local churches and ministries to cultivate lay-leaders who are strong in the Biblical texts, skilled in working with others and sensitive to the culture in which they minister. We want to help leaders engage in the process of their own spiritual formation as they point others to Christ. Our hope is to provide leadership training and spiritual direction to those who don't have the time or resources to attend a traditional seminary. We also want to be a resource for local churches and other ministries that don't have the resources or manpower to do this kind of training themselves.
Results: So far, we have seen about 40 students graduate with the equivalent of a Master's Degree of Divinity (MDIV) and/or certification in spiritual direction. Even those who did not complete the Master's requirements gained much just by being at Emma House for a short time!

I have seen the entire process that my parents, Liam and Precious Atchison, have gone through to begin and continue this ministry. I have not only learned a great deal simply from watching them interact with students and other people, but I have also been incredibly inspired by the mission of Emma House. Their focus is so personal and they really care about each individual who comes through the door. I think that the small class sizes, which provide a much more intimate and welcoming setting, is very appealing to most people. Also, as a household setting, it is comfortable, welcoming, and the coffee's always ready! Something that I see as a non-student but as a first-hand observer of how things are run, is how much time, even outside the classroom, that my parents put into this ministry. They are truly passionate about it, genuinely care about people, and they are so very good at what they do!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many ways. I have had first-hand observation of how the business side is run, I have observed and sat in on various classes, known and been friends with students of my parents, and have helped with various fund-raising events.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make the out-reach size larger. In other words, I would make so everyone knew about it and could benefit from Emma House!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

observing the kindness, welcome, friendship, real-life attitudes and Godliness that is exhibited in the staff and students. I wish all schools could be run out of homes :)

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

hard-working, real, kind-hearted, determined and driven.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach, train, teach and inspire millions of people around the world!

Ways to make it better...

I had actually attended classes! I have always wanted to learn Greek...

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

fund-raising. And the thing about Emma House is that it doesn't take much to run it... every little bit literally counts for Emma House!

One thing I'd also say is that...

the ministry provided by Emmanuel House is certainly not limited to those seeking degrees or higher education. If Emma House continues to grow, the possibilities are endless...
