Mission: Education Through Music, Inc. (ETM) makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts. ETM partners with schools that lack sufficient funding for school-wide music programs, and ETM ensures that every student enrolled in these schools receives weekly music instruction. Since 1991, ETM has harnessed the power of music to enhance the academic performance and general development of its students. Our work provides these children with the skills to become better learners and the confidence to live in an increasingly challenging world.
Results: Over the 2012-2013 school year, the evaluation data collected suggest that the ETM program model is being effectively implemented. ETM instruction is associated with increased student learning in music and academics, improved general development of students, and the program builds support of music education within its partnership schools and communities. To measure ETM’s effectiveness, surveys were conducted with students, teachers, principals and parents. Students’ assessment scores in music and academics were also obtained. Summary of findings *ETM students show greater academic achievement than their peers in non-ETM schools. The ETM program supports learning in the academic areas of Math and English Language Arts (ELA). Comparative data from the New York State (NYS) Assessment suggests that students within ETM schools have greater academic achievement than those in NYC public schools that have similar demographic populations. Furthermore, ETM students’ academic achievement is positively correlated to their musical achievement, based on performance measures from the NYS Assessments and the ETM Music Assessment. *ETM has a positive impact on students’ general development. The ETM program is important to students’ development in a variety of social and emotional measures, as indicated by survey responses from students, classroom teachers and parents. Most notably, respondents reported that the program helped students within the areas of self-esteem, creativity, and positive attitude. *ETM’s partnership school communities highly regard the music program. The overall program is perceived as a necessary and positive school presence, as indicated by survey responses from classroom teachers, principals, and parents. In particular, classroom teachers regard the program’s music instruction as beneficial to their students’ learning in all areas. Programs: In 2014-15, ETM's partner school program will provide music education to 20,000 economically disadvantaged students in 37 schools in NYC who would otherwise have limited or no arts exposure. ETM provides music as a core subject to every student. We hire music teachers; we train these teachers so they can be eligible to be hired by schools as part of a long-term plan for sustaining programs. We conduct outreach to classroom teachers and parents to build understanding and advocacy for music education. By providing quality music education to 20,000 students and building support within school communities, our programs: provide students with musical skills and knowledge; support growth in students' self-confidence and self-esteem; support improved achievement in other academic areas; support community involvement; and increase the capacity of partner schools to sustain music programs on their own so that the benefits of music education can continue beyond the life of ETM.

Education Through Music is one of the most incredible organizations I have had the honor of being involved with. I have seen first hand, for the last three years, how the organization has enabled students to feel great about participating in music and how students participation has impacted their overall education. In a world where arts education is increasingly being cut, ETM offers a complete solution - teachers, instruments, curriculum. It's a much needed service in a world where we continue to devalue the arts.

...seeing students who have participated in the program evolve into musicians and, equally as importantly, have heard the results of increased test scores across multiple disciplines.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...find a way to get more resources so that the program can be expanded to more schools that are suffering from losing arts education.

I worked for Education Through Music for about three years, and in that time I was impressed on a daily basis by the real impact that the organization was having on the lives of disadvantaged students. It was always an inspiration to go see the program in action in the partner schools, and the student performances showed the students' measurable progress and developing love of music.

Last year, I saw a performance of students at a school in the Bronx. They performed for Joshua Bell. It was an experience I will never forget watching those students play their hearts out for Mr. Bell. They played beautifully and it brought tears to my eyes. No where else would these children had the opportunity to learn and play. I'm sure it's a memory they will never, never forget. I know I won't.

I continue to support this organization and am glad that there are people and organizations who understand the importance of the arts in children's lives and bring opportunities to experience music to schools where music, dance and art programs are cut from the curriculum.

Last year, I saw a first-time performance of students at a school in the Bronx. They performed for the violinist, Joshua Bell. He was so warm and gracious. He answered questions and spoke to them about the importance of music and the arts in their lives and encouraged them to continue their music education. It warmed my heart to see these children who were in awe of Mr. Bell and how they played so beautifully for him. This was an opportunity I know they never would have in the regular NYC system.

Education Through Music is a unique program that has achieved tremendous results serving children in disadvantaged schools for whom arts education would otherwise not be a reality. In its 20th year of operation, ETM serves 13,000 children in New York City in 23 schools.

ETM stresses consistent, comprehensive, sequential music instruction and partners with inner-schools to ensure that each and every student in the school benefits from the program. ETM integrates its program with the school's academic curriculum and thereby improves students' academic outcomes and enhances overall development.

We have seen measurable results on students' academic performance and preparedness through a quantitative long-term study undertaken by outside evaluation experts. In visits to ETM partner schools, I have personally seen extraordinary levels of student engagement and excitement, and have seen how ETM's involvement has improved the climate and cohesion inside the school.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

ETM has worked closely with individual schools and clusters of schools in NYC and now in Los Angeles and the SF Bay Area. Unlike programs with major arts institution sponsorship, it is still less visible in the educational and arts communities than its track record and results would justify. I would like to see ETM's profile raised.

Education Through Music provides music education to our K - 5 students. In addition, it provides band instruction. The students in our school, which has a 74% poverty level, benefit from music instruction, which they would not otherwise have. The teachers are well trained, and teach music theory and instrumental music in context. Our students have become more well rounded. This program often results in successes for students who are not succeeding academically. The Education Through Music staff has been cooperative and is always looking to match the right artist with our school culture. We are very pleased with ETM!

I would not make changes in this organization. Even in the current economy, they have been able to raise enough funding to keep the program going and even to grow!

As the Education Manager at a regional symphony, I am so pleased to have the opportunity to partner and collaborate with Education Through Music on many of our music education programs. Their knowledge, expertise and professionalism is unparallelled. They have helped to create some of our most successful programs. ETM never loses sight of it's goals - using music to educate, broaden and inspire young people. I give them my highest recommendation.

I am writing to express my appreciation and praise for Education Through Music’s work with the P.S. 3/The Bedford Village School, located in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. We have sustained a partnership with ETM for more than a decade. They support and participate in our efforts to provide music education for all of our students.

Their teaching artists instruct our students in general, vocal and instrumental music. They provide professional development for our staff by modeling lessons that can be taught by classroom teachers and integrated into their core curriculum teaching. They assist classroom teachers in implementing musical projects with their students, as well. Frequent concerts, organized by their teaching artist, showcase students’ learning and musical abilities and provide experiences to attend musical performances. Additionally, ETM has purchased instruments and a library of music-related trade books for use by our students and teachers.

ETM works with P.S. 3’s School Leadership Team and me to plan for and implement comprehensive sequential-skills music education that will also support cognitive development and academic achievement in all subject areas. Our students are musically talented and many of them graduate to participate in music education in middle school. Parents express interests in arts education for their children; they want to enroll their children in P.S. 3 because of our arts education focus.

ETM advises us in strategic planning for School Development initiatives, fund-raising to support school programs and facility improvement in the community and with our local elected officials. Their efforts have led to recent lighting and audio/visual system upgrades for our auditorium. That, in turn, has allowed us to welcome a decades-old, NYC-based theater company, The Shadow Box Theatre, to establish a permanent residency at P.S. 3. They will also support our music and theater education.

Over the years I have urged my school leader colleagues to partner with Education Through Music. I heartily recommend this arts-in-education organization as one of the best in New York City.

I volunteered with ETM in Fall 2010. ETM is dedicated to bringing music education to inner city schools in New York City. The majority of the children ETM serves would not otherwise have access to music education or exposure to some of the great artists, like Joshua Bell, that ETM provides.

ETM spends an enormous amount of time and effort ensuring that the have funding for its programs and that the music programs are of an extremely high caliber. The music teachers employed by ETM are gifted musicians and gifted teachers. ETM ensures that its teachers have access to the latest technology, like SMART boards, and training.

ETM's programs have an positive impact on the children they serve. Music gives the children something to feel positive about during the school day.

I went to one of the ETM schools on a day that Joshua Bell was giving a master class at one of the public elementary schools in the Bronx. Seeing the childrens faces light up when Joshua played for them and listened to them play showed me how much the work that ETM does really impacts the students it helps.

More funding! The ETM program is well run and well organized, ETM does need increased and continued support to help reach more children.

Education Through Music believes every child should have a well-rounded education that includes music both as a subject and as a means of supporting learning in other areas. I believe this is an accurate description of how this program has been implemented in our school. Students are given the opportunity to learn a variety of subjects with the support of music. Music teachers incorporate the units of study currently being taught into their music class. They use music to explain concepts in a different and unique way. Students are able to use hands on materials, such as instuments, to get them involved in learning the material. Every student also has the chance to perform in a concert twice a school year which allows the school to come together and support one another.

My experience with Education Through Music is a great one! The students that partcipate love and enjoy it. They have not only have developed a love of music but have also become very skilled in reading and understanding what music is and how it is made. An example of this is when they practice singing they understand that there are different notes where their voices need to change.
