Mission: Education Through Music, Inc. (ETM) makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have limited or no exposure to the arts. ETM partners with schools that lack sufficient funding for school-wide music programs, and ETM ensures that every student enrolled in these schools receives weekly music instruction. Since 1991, ETM has harnessed the power of music to enhance the academic performance and general development of its students. Our work provides these children with the skills to become better learners and the confidence to live in an increasingly challenging world.
Results: Over the 2012-2013 school year, the evaluation data collected suggest that the ETM program model is being effectively implemented. ETM instruction is associated with increased student learning in music and academics, improved general development of students, and the program builds support of music education within its partnership schools and communities. To measure ETM’s effectiveness, surveys were conducted with students, teachers, principals and parents. Students’ assessment scores in music and academics were also obtained. Summary of findings *ETM students show greater academic achievement than their peers in non-ETM schools. The ETM program supports learning in the academic areas of Math and English Language Arts (ELA). Comparative data from the New York State (NYS) Assessment suggests that students within ETM schools have greater academic achievement than those in NYC public schools that have similar demographic populations. Furthermore, ETM students’ academic achievement is positively correlated to their musical achievement, based on performance measures from the NYS Assessments and the ETM Music Assessment. *ETM has a positive impact on students’ general development. The ETM program is important to students’ development in a variety of social and emotional measures, as indicated by survey responses from students, classroom teachers and parents. Most notably, respondents reported that the program helped students within the areas of self-esteem, creativity, and positive attitude. *ETM’s partnership school communities highly regard the music program. The overall program is perceived as a necessary and positive school presence, as indicated by survey responses from classroom teachers, principals, and parents. In particular, classroom teachers regard the program’s music instruction as beneficial to their students’ learning in all areas. Programs: In 2014-15, ETM's partner school program will provide music education to 20,000 economically disadvantaged students in 37 schools in NYC who would otherwise have limited or no arts exposure. ETM provides music as a core subject to every student. We hire music teachers; we train these teachers so they can be eligible to be hired by schools as part of a long-term plan for sustaining programs. We conduct outreach to classroom teachers and parents to build understanding and advocacy for music education. By providing quality music education to 20,000 students and building support within school communities, our programs: provide students with musical skills and knowledge; support growth in students' self-confidence and self-esteem; support improved achievement in other academic areas; support community involvement; and increase the capacity of partner schools to sustain music programs on their own so that the benefits of music education can continue beyond the life of ETM.

I am a Professor of Music Education at Oberlin Conservatory. I learned of Education Through Music about 8 years ago, and since then I have had a growing admiration for what they are doing and how they are doing it. With the goal of serving children.....ALL children.....in the NYC schools, they focus on "boots on the ground" strategies that get music teachers into under-served schools. I was so interested in their program that I made a trip last November and said I wanted to see one of their "toughest" schools. The commitment, energy, organization, and focus on the EDUCATION of children through music in ETM means that music and teaching are not watered, not flashy campaigns, not "special" programs that serve only certain kids, and not trite slogans to woo donors and administrators. They are doing what we all want our music programs to do; they are helping kids make music and helping kids think themselves into happy, healthy, and satisfying lives.

I have been associated with Education Through Music for 20 Years. ETM’s mission of bringing quality music education to inner-city schools has been an interest of mine. In addition to music
the ETM program advances academic and personal development in every child attending our partner schools. Our classes are scheduled on a weekly basis throughout the academic year.
Music gives children self esteem and strengthens cognitive skills. This leads to higher test scores, creates better thinkers, and lifelong learners overall. The program’s goals are enhanced by engaging highly qualified music teachers and giving them specialized training specific to the goals of the organization. Continuous evaluation of both students and teachers keeps the program dynamic and assures a high success rate. Every year we work to improve our programs and to reach more children.

Education Through Music(ETM) has helped to transform our sixth graders from shy timid boys and girls to proud expressive young ladies and gentlemen! We at One World Middle School believe in educating the whole child and ETM has helped us to do just that. The students cant wait for Ms. Perkins to come. They loved performing in the Winter Concert and are practicing rigorously for their Spring Concert! Through performing the students are finding their voice and it is building their self-esteem!

Being the first music therapist for ETM, I was honored to have the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the various children I work with. Music Therapy is the direct use of music to reach non-musical goals, including communication, socialization, motor functioning, emotional awareness, cognitive skills and of course functional academics.

As I review my work over the past year, one specific student stands out more than most. This 4th grade student was referred for music therapy by her classroom teacher and Occupational Therapist because of a severe deficit in functional mathematics, specifically with coins. The Occupational Therapist had been working with this student for nearly a year and a half with limited success on simply identifying the coins and attributing values to the coins.

Upon assessment, it was found that this student was incredibly musical (evidenced by spontaneously singing and creating rhythms and melodies) and extremely bright in verbal/communication skills engaging in meaning and insightful conversations. However, her identification of coins was less than 50%. She was put on music therapy service to be seen 45 minutes a week.

As we develop as young children, many of the basic functional academics are taught through song, the “ABC’s” being the perfect example (26 separate bits of information all memorized in order by a preschooler is only made possible through the music). Using a similar theory, the student’s best chance to acquiring and retaining this knowledge would be through song.

During her assessment, this student shared that her favorite song was “Baby” by Justin Bieber. Because the most ideal therapeutic outcome typically comes through preferred music, the student learned a new version of “Baby” with the words of the refrain rewritten to be a mnemonic device to the tune of the platinum hit:

“Penny, one cent
Nickel fiiiiiiive cents
Dime is tiny
And is teeeeeen cents
Quarter is the biggest with
25 25 25 25”

The student loved the song and used Garageband to choose drumbeats/synthesizer parts and record her own voice singing this refrain. A CD was made for the student to listen to several times a day to engrain the song into her memory.

After several weeks of rehearsal, the student was identifying all coins and attributing vales with a 100% success rate.

The music therapy continued as the student began writing her own verses for various mnemonic devices to rehearse a variety of strategies for counting coins. Another couple of months and several recordings later, this student not only identified/attributed vales to the coins with 100% success rate, but was counting complex combinations of coins up to a dollar with nearly 100% success.

An absolutely vital life skill, which had escaped this child for nearly 10 years, was taught through the power of music. Did her consistent classroom support, occupational therapy and years of support assist in this acquisition of knowledge? Undoubtedly. However, the motivating and mnemonic power of music was the catalyst that allowed this student to begin to thrive in a public environment. And of course Education Through Music was the organization that made this all possible!!

St. Clare's School has been serviced by ETM since 2005. As a school principal, I also had ETM at another school for 5 years. The children from pre-k to 8th grade have been given music appreciation, music theory, choral training and string orchestra training. They have been taught to perform at school concerts and other community venues throughout the years.A fewe years ago the children in their first year of violin class were able to perform with Joshua Bell at the Waldorf Astoria. They have also performed for school open houses. One of the local assembly members requested their presence at a community awards ceremony for children who entered an essay contest about their grandparents. This music program provides the opportunity for the children to gain self confidence, pride and cultural appreciation of music and art. The teachers are well-trained and very talented! What a gift this program has been for our school community.

I am a teacher/dean at One World Middle School where ETM has worked with our students throughout the year. The students have really flourished and have grown tremendously. For many students, this was the first time they were exposed to music and what a joy! This experience for our students has been a great one and we hope we have an opportunity to establish a long lasting relationship with them in the future.

I am the principal of a brand new school, One World Middle School, that opened its doors to students in September of 2011. I am not sure where to even begin -- in such a short time, I am blown away by the nurturing of our school community by Education Through Music. They take time and believe in our student Ambassadors during moments where it is a bit hard to :)

The opportunity and experience that ETM provides sparks something inside of our Ambassadors. They invited our students to sing at a gala. They took time to come in and work with our students to prepare for the gala. There were moments were students wanted to give up but they encouraged students to keep going while pushing them to be at their best. In short, the gala was a huge success! One student who has regularly cut from September and was thinking of joining a gang a few months back sang his heart out on that stage while his mother cried next to me. As he left Tuesday evening he asked me "When are we doing that again Ms. Wynne?" Another student who barely speaks in and out of class sang and smiled on the stage and expressed how excited she was afterwards. Students want to know when can they do this again. Music has been ignited in their hearts and it is because of ETM. I could go on and on about the fire that was sparked in every Ambassador.. but put simply ETM is a one of a kind!

I am a Principal of a new small middle school in the Bronx -- One World Middle School @Edenwald. When I began recruiting students last April, parents expressed an interest in Music within the school. At the time, music was not part of our curricula. As I continued recruiting students and parents continued to express interest in music I began to rethink my decision on music within the school. I began to investigate music programs on-line and through word of mouth. Education Through Music was recommended highly from neighboring principals, colleagues, parents, students and my network. When I contacted ETM, they visited my school to discuss a partnership. I was impressed with their interest in the mission/vision of my school. They took a real interest in how music would fit with our mission and vision and emphasized how this was a significant factor in our partnership. We agreed we were a great fit and fast forward to the first day of music with our students. The music teacher from ETM made contact with me and came in during the summer to decorate the music space. The environment is inviting and student friendly. On the first day of music the students LOVED it. They would not stop talking about music. Parents were excited that we incorporated music into our program. They talked so much I emailed ETM to see if we could either add an extra day and/or create an after school program. Our music teacher assigned is pro-active and is willing to join us on a parent evening to lead a student performance. ETM administrative staff works hand-in-hand with me and has been extremely helpful with all of my questions. My experience has been a positive one and I am so excited to build our partnership so our students can benefit from the talents of ETM. Thank you ETM!
