Issues: Animals, Environment

Location: 426 17th St. 6th Floor Oakland CA 94612 USA

Mission: Earthjustice is a nonprofit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities.
Geographic areas served: We have regional office all over the country and an international office based in Oakland
Programs: Earthjustice works in eight regional offices around the country to protect the environment by enforcing the law. Our offices are working together to combat the causes of global warming, including challenging some of the dirtiest existing and proposed coal-fired power plants and encouraging action on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Offices also focus on local issues aimed at protecting public lands, forests, and wildlife, and defending everone's right to clean air and water. In Alaska, we are working to protect the nation's largest temperate rainforest, the Tongass National Forest. In the Pacific Northwest, our efforts are focused on restoring the runs of wild salmon and steelhead on the Columbia and Snake Rivers and throughout the region. In California, our staff is working to protect Sierra Nevada wild lands and ensure public health in the Central Valley by enforcing the Clean Air Act. In Hawaii we work with native Hawaiian communities to protect endangered species and water resources, and to protect the food supply from the impacts of GMOs. In Florida, we are pushing for a sane state water policy, and public access to the state's waterways. Our two Rocky Mountain offices -- one in Colorado, the other in Montana -- are working to protect endangered species, including grizzly bears and the habitat upon which they depend, and stop fire sale oil and gas leasing of our public lands. Our Washington DC office is leading the effort to clean up air pollution on behalf of the thousands of Americans at risk of developing asthma due to smog and air pollution. And finally, our international program works with attorneys throughout the Americas and the world, building cross-national support for a better, healthier, environment.

Very active organization with easy online petition access. Makes a difference in many areas. Very imaginative, well written and professional emails. Worthy of support. Frequent communications.

I've supported Earthjustice because they've taken action on a substantial number of cases and gotten substantial results. Anyone who bothers to research the history of the extraction and use of natural resources will agree that the earth needs a good lawyer. Technologies like mountaintop removal and hydraulic fracturing need to be opposed, and our advocates need teeth. Chanting protesters are not going to stop BP, Exxon, or the Peabody Coal Company from destroying the earth. Existing laws, or lack of enforcement, enable corporations to plunder, and legal action is needed to stop them.

The more I learn about this organization, the less I believe in its mission. Yes, the environment needs protection. However, suing the government and other entities does not always enact the proper change that is needed for true protection. On top of the fact that they later seek attorney's fees and costs from the government makes me even more suspicious of their true goals. I'd rather send my money to the Nature Conservancy that actually does collaborative work to help the environment rather that confrontational tactics. The true impact of this organization is about litigation and no collaboration which in the end only fills their pockets with other people's monies.

$322,092 1.09% Donnell Van Noppen President

Regardless of their 4-Star ratings, I'm having trouble getting motivated to send donations to charities whose presidents are getting salaries over $100k.

Earth Justice states 'because the earth needs a good attorney'. So true, and I am sooooo thankful that Earth Justice is here working to inform and ensure that the earth remains or recovers to be a healthy place for all who share this planet. They act where so many others sit on the sidelines and just make noise. They took up the water-rights fight in Hawaii when many thought it was a losing battle. They never took that stance, and Hawaii and the local people are better because of Earth Justice. Thank you.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Friends and family have benefited from their expertise in the islands.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

None. Unless hoping for more public funding via donations is possible....

An awesome organization to donate to, 81% of all donations go to the work they do. I joined their monthly giving program and it is a great way to stay involved and make my money go further (less mail, they can count on my funds monthly, and I am member of a special group). I have had a few one-on-one interactions with Earthjustice and every time they have been polite and helpful. Keep up the good work. You have my support!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

they are effective in the work they do. I see results!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

polite and helpful

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

save the world!!!
