Mission: Earthjustice is the premier nonprofit public interest environmental law organization. We wield the power of law and the strength of partnership to protect people’s health, to preserve magnificent places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change. We are here because the earth needs a good lawyer.
Results: Earthjustice’s dedicated attorneys take on and win key environmental victories in the courtroom—often pursuing cases for many years. Here are a few of the most significant legal victories we’ve scored on behalf of the environment and public health.
PRESERVING NATURAL HERITAGE
Our legal team fought for a decade to save the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, winning more than a dozen cases.
THE RESULT: Nearly 50 million acres of national forest—critical habitat for wildlife, from grizzly bears to bald eagles—received permanent protection.
PROTECTING PUBLIC HEALTH
To clean up deadly soot pollution in our air, Earthjustice partnered with community organizations to pressure Congress and take the Environmental Protection Agency to court.
THE RESULT: A strong new soot standard will save thousands of lives and billions of dollars in health-related costs every year.
CLIMATE AND CLEAN ENERGY
For the past decade, Earthjustice has won a series of court decisions leading to the shuttering of nearly a third of U.S. coal generation.
THE RESULT: The legal victories prevent more than 77 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year, block coal exports from the West Coast and stop American coal from reaching fast-growing Asian markets such as China and India.
Geographic areas served: We are a national organization with strong roots in 12 offices around the United States that offer regional emphasis and expertise. Housed within our San Francisco headquarters, our international program partners with organizations around the world to focus on human rights, climate change, indigenous peoples, and international trade.
Programs: Founded in 1971, Earthjustice is the nation’s premier nonprofit environmental law organization. We wield the power of the law and the strength of partnership to preserve our wildlife, wild lands, and oceans; protect people’s health; combat climate change; and advance clean energy solutions. Every year we represent more than 350 client groups large and small—all at no charge. We take on the biggest, most precedent-setting cases across the country and achieve high-impact, far-reaching results. Below are recent highlights in each of our three main areas of work.
WILDLIFE, WILD LANDS AND OCEANS
Earthjustice fights to protect our wildlife and wild places, from the Arctic to the Everglades to the vast wilderness within our oceans. Our clients and partners include national and local conservation groups, Native peoples, fishing communities, and small island states.
Earthjustice has long been at the forefront of safeguarding the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink. We’re working with conservation and health advocates and with affected communities across the country to ensure widespread protections from pollution and exposure to toxic chemicals.
CLIMATE AND ENERGY
Earthjustice is waging an all-out campaign for a rapid shift away from fossil fuels to avert catastrophic impacts of climate change. On behalf of a wide array of local and national organizations, our attorneys are fighting in courtrooms and public utilities commissions across the country to hasten a transformational shift to clean energy.
October was the Earth’s warmest month ever. It's crucially important to help environmental organizations fight for the right of all to a healthy environment. Earthjustice wields the power of law and the strength of partnerships to take on critical environmental issues and bring about positive change.
As a passionate New Yorker who also lives in Denver, I love our city just as much as I love the mountains. From sea level to a mile high up, a changing environment affects us all and we need our earth to be defended by great lawyers.
I've supported Earthjustice because they've taken action on a substantial number of cases and gotten substantial results. Anyone who bothers to research the history of the extraction and use of natural resources will agree that the earth needs a good lawyer. Technologies like mountaintop removal and hydraulic fracturing need to be opposed, and our advocates need teeth. Chanting protesters are not going to stop BP, Exxon, or the Peabody Coal Company from destroying the earth. Existing laws, or lack of enforcement, enable corporations to plunder, and legal action is needed to stop them.
The more I learn about this organization, the less I believe in its mission. Yes, the environment needs protection. However, suing the government and other entities does not always enact the proper change that is needed for true protection. On top of the fact that they later seek attorney's fees and costs from the government makes me even more suspicious of their true goals. I'd rather send my money to the Nature Conservancy that actually does collaborative work to help the environment rather that confrontational tactics. The true impact of this organization is about litigation and no collaboration which in the end only fills their pockets with other people's monies.
Earth Justice states 'because the earth needs a good attorney'. So true, and I am sooooo thankful that Earth Justice is here working to inform and ensure that the earth remains or recovers to be a healthy place for all who share this planet. They act where so many others sit on the sidelines and just make noise. They took up the water-rights fight in Hawaii when many thought it was a losing battle. They never took that stance, and Hawaii and the local people are better because of Earth Justice. Thank you.
An awesome organization to donate to, 81% of all donations go to the work they do. I joined their monthly giving program and it is a great way to stay involved and make my money go further (less mail, they can count on my funds monthly, and I am member of a special group). I have had a few one-on-one interactions with Earthjustice and every time they have been polite and helpful. Keep up the good work. You have my support!
