I have provided citezens in our community with canine councilling for over 25 years. Part of our educational plan for our shelter is to reduce the number of owner released animals coming through our doors. Help clients and animals through the adjustment periods of a new relationship. Provide knowledge to help dispell fear, asin our experience as animal control or the city, shows that the majority of dog bites which happen in our community are the result of poor education of the public and fear induced responses by the dogs. Doggone Safes Be A Tree Program incorporates all of the tools needed to make real changes in public perception and we have seen a signifigant decrease in dog bites toward young children since we have been using the Be A Tree programs in local schools. Be A Tree is the absolute best there is to evoke change. - Robert Metzler, President, Gloucester SPCA

I'm with a beagle rescue and include information from Doggone Safe with all of the packages that I share with new foster and adopting families and encourage families to visit their website.
I am passionate about dog bite prevention. It not only saves children the trauma of being bitten but ultimately saves the lives of the dogs too. As far as I can see it dog bite prevention education is a win-win situation. Personally I would like to see dog bite prevention added to the cirriculum of all elementary schools and brochures made available in emergency departments of all hospitals.
I can't say enough good things about Doggone Safe. All of their information is well written and easy to read; not too technical. Graphics are great. A fun learning experience for children. Love the colouring pages and puzzle pages. I can't think of anything that I would change. Keep up the excellent work.

Joan Orr and her partner developed and continue to grow this outstanding program. We will never know how may children over the years have avoided dog attacks due to lessons so easily taught and learned from their work. As a child and adolescent psychiatrist, I evaluated dog bitten children over my three decades in practice. Some unfortunate dog bite victims are affected for a long time. Some younger victims suffer secretly and silently from PTSD. Prevention, always worth more than a pound of cure, characterizes Doggone Safe's goal. In the past year they created a board game, Doggone Crazy, that presents a fun way for children, by competitive repetition, to learn dog safety. They continue to promote and distribute classroom presentations, my wife and I did them, that engage children by teaching them to "Be a Tree". The treatment of children following a dog attack is often inadequate from emergency departments to physician's offices. That is another reason that Doggone Safe's lessons on prevention will remain important for years to come.

Doggone Safe is great! There are resources to help teach kids how to interact with kids. They teach kids how to be safe around dogs so they don't get bitten. And they provide resources to teach all of this i schools and clubs too.

I recently signed up to receive a Be A Tree Kit and become a presenter. I am extremely impressed with the kit! I have done several presentations to kids in schools but I am so excited to do this particular presentation. It is simple, easy to understand and I love the big cards, games and activities suggested. Really great!

Education is the key and this organization is the first I found that was so open and upfront with their information. Excellent advice, tips, and knowledge for people who might come in contact with an aggressive dog. However, I feel a large factor is missing. Education, knowledge, and responsibility for dog owner's is the main key for dog bite prevention. Where are the pamphlets of information for dog owners and what they can do to prevent their dog from attacking or biting. If the owner's were aware of their dog's body language, responsible with their training and handling, the education for others would not be as crucial as it is.

I am a physician, specializing in Post-Traumatic Stress disorder, who was additionally nearly mauled to death by a German Shepard nearly 35 years ago. I happened upon Doggone safe and the support group several years ago, and have remained an active member ever since that time. The organization has not only benefited me, but I have observed over the years of participation the help and healing that it has brought to others who have survived dog attacks. The educational aspects of Doggone Safe additionally provides the members and general public a multitude of ways to keep themselves and children as well as their animals safe from further dog attacks, which for humans, require 5 million ER and operations per year and up to 30 deaths annually, per CDC report (2008).

As above. I have benefited by helping others with their own problems with their traumas as a result of dog attacks, and learned a great deal in doing so about my own childhood mauling.

As an Animal Behaviourist who has testified in numerous court cases as a designated "expert" witness in the field of canine aggression in Ontario, I came accross some information relevant to Doggone Safe when reviewing material for a recent case. The parents of a young child credited this program with saving their daughter's life when she was confronted by a large, aggressive acting dog. According to them, had they not taught her the principles outlined in the 'Be a Tree' program, the results of their daughter's incident with this dog could have been disasterous. This account should tell you everything you need to know about the efficacy Doggone Safe.

I'm a professional dog trainer/behaviour therapist and I have used Doggone Safe material for years to educate my clients. I just love their programs! From the Doggone Crazy Board game, Be A Tree Programs to all their bite prevention and safety programs; each have been an invaluable tool. Clients have always found all the material not only informative but fun and easy to understand. Joan and Theresa have done an amazing job with these programs and have always been helpful and supportive in sharing their tools. Keep up the good work & thanks for all that you do :)
