Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: The Dog Liberator is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and abandoned dogs, primarily dogs from high-kill shelters and owners who can no longer care for them. By working with committed volunteers, local veterinarians, trainers, and foster homes, we are able to rescue hundreds of dogs every year. From June of 2009 to date, we have rescued, rehabilitated, spay/neutered, and re-homed over 700 dogs throughout the Southeast. Our dogs are fostered in a home environment which enables us to evaluate the dog’s true temperament, provide them with loving temporary care, and find them well-matched, carefully screened homes. We also serve as a resource to our community and all pet owners by providing education and information on responsible pet ownership, including the importance of spay/neuter, positive behavior training, and good nutrition. Our dogs are examined, vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered before they are re-homed. The Dog Liberator continues to focus on rescuing herding dogs. Herding dogs have specific needs, both physical and mental, and when adopted to the wrong environment, they can develop behavioral issues. Herding breeds consist of Collies, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, and herding mixes. The Dog Liberator prides themselves on rescuing and adopting deaf/blind dogs and shy fearful dogs that are at high risk for euthanasia.

Results: Over 700 gorgeous and highly adoptable animals have been saved from unnecessary euthanasia and placed in loving homes.

Target demographics: homeless death row dogs

Direct beneficiaries per year: 200 beautiful dogs

Geographic areas served: Southeast United States

Programs: rescue, rehabilitation, medical care, behavioral assessments, training, spay/neuter and adoptions.

The Dog Liberator (TDL) is an INCREDIBLE rescue that has the very best, long-term, caring Founder (along with her family!) and volunteers! I also appreciate that TDL does not discriminate; TDL takes in ALL KINDS: ages, disabilities, unwell, deaf, blind, etc. of dogs (they've even rescued some cats!). Taking all these dogs in is positively one of the most expensive "hobbies" I can imagine. Except this is not a hobby for TDL- TDL is their lives. I would never hesitate to donate or buy from their Amazon wish list if I am able. I can say that, TDL has changed our lives for the better-ALL of our lives! We enjoy the annual get togethers where dogs are the belles and beaus of the party! I am continually impressed by the ongoing work of all involved with TDL, organized over multiple states, all with the goal of SAVING LIVES of animals who find themselves in need of help and a home. I remain appreciative for, not only our sweet (challenging, goofy, FUN) adopted girl, but all the other animals they have helped. If you are able to share, even a small amount with TDL, you can rest assured, your contribution will go directly to helping the animals. And TDL is not a short term rescue. They are in it for the long haul! We adopted our girl from them over five years ago now! My Photos: First photo I uploaded is our Sunny girl (formerly named Sunbeam) upon intake to the shelter. She looks so sad, so confused, so baby in a big, scary, loud shelter. She was there with her two other siblings- a whole litter abandoned to probable death in a southeastern rural, high-kill shelter. TDL rescued them all, flew them down to Florida with he help of Pilots And Paws (which is also an AMAZING charity!) and found them all homes. The second picture is us, her new people, the first day we got home. She's definitely still confused LOL but those little ears were up and she knew it was going to be OK. And picture three is...Sunny. That's her. She is happy if she's playing with or ripping apart any number of toys she has. Four is Sunny being an attentive coworker at my job with me.

I love this dog rescue. They gave us our sweet border collie and we can't imagine our lives without her. It's true, dogs may not be your whole life, but they do make your life whole. They do incredible work on a shoe string.

I can't say enought good things about TDL! We adopted our Border Collie mix, Dolly, from them 1.5 years ago. TDL rescued my Dolly girl just a few hours before she was scheduled to be euthanized! I will be forever grateful, she is a wonderful companion and we just love her to pieces! I try to contribute money every month to TDL because they do great work and operate on very little money. If you are looking for a charity who will leverage every cent you give them into saving more animals, this is it. TDL is wonderful.

Where do I begin? This organization devotes all of their heart and time to finding homes for these helpless, wonderful animals who would otherwise be euthanized, abused, or spend their entire existence in a shelter. My daughter has adopted two dogs (the latest is featured in the picture for this ad) from them and I wrote a children's book last year using this organization as my primary source. From that experience, one of my co-workers was so moved and impressed by them she ended up adopting a dog also.

I really have never seen anything like them. They are selfless, amazing angels and I will continue to support them in any way I can. Whether they win this or not, in my eyes and a lot of others they are they greatest non-profit EVER! I admire the work they do diligently without ever expecting any personal praise but with only one thing in mind. God Bless you all for what you do. Keep up the good work. You make the world a better place.

I can't begin to tell you how wonderful TDL is - not only for the dogs, but for all the folks associated with this NP. TDL is headed up by Gisele - and you can't find someone who has more compassion and knowledge of animal psychology! We never intended on adopting a deafie, and now that we have one we will NEVER go back! Our sweet girl is always upstaging all the other dogs on the agility equipment, and she has more personality than any dog I have ever met. TDL has been there for us every step of the way - answering all our questions and providing support through medical issues (our dog has many food allergies and we had a rough time getting her diagnosed). We love TDL, and we are happy to entrust our donations to such a great group!

Gisele and the volunteers at the Dog Liberator are doing a great service for the community. Too many herding dogs are abandoned. As the owner of a Sheltie, I know how wonderful and kind the breed is. I am so happy that an organization is out there that is looking out for these dogs. The stories of saving and adopting out the dogs are inspirational.

If more rescues were run like TDL all dogs would have a forever home.

TDL is a model that all dog rescues could use to place lovely dogs in loving forever homes. There track record is outstanding and they have had huge success placing throw away dogs (deaf). That is miraculous. I have a good friend that got a dog from TDL and they are so in love with this dog and he with his owners that it was a match made in heaven. If I ever get another dog (currently have 4) I will go through TDL.

Fantastic rescue that works 24/7 on saving dogs, some that are minutes from being put down. Perfectly, great dogs almost being put down!!?? As a donor, or someone just interested, they have a great website and great adoption process. They also keep you in the know with newsletters, and DAILY updates via Facebook and their website. They are a rescue I trust 100%, and know my donations are going 100% to the rescue effort.

I became familiar with The DogLiberator in 2009 while volunteering at a local shelter. This rescue group was very willing to help our small shelter place puppies and dogs within their foster home network. They did an excellent job finding permanent homes for the pets they received from our shelter and continue to do great work.
I have volunteered for animal welfare for 30 years and have seen many shelter environments and worked with various rescue groups. The DogLiberator is professionally run and continues to do a great job.
