I am a divemaster who was trained by DiveHeart to be an adaptive buddy and now assist with a local organization with the same mission. I've worked with both "new" divers and people who were returning to the water the first time since an accident. I have been moved to tears every time I have been present to see a "differently abled" person experience the sensation of weightlessness. For each of them, getting underwater has greatly diminished, if not eliminated, for the moment, their feeling of being "different." Each of these individuals is much more than their perceived physical limitation, and diving really brings that home. Instead of "the person in the wheelchair" he or she can become "the diver with the yellow mask". I've even known one who got to be "the diver who got up close and personal with the turtle" No one wants to experience life-limiting illnesses or injuries, and many who have them yearn to be "normal" again. Diveheart helps them do this! What a gift!

I can't swim. I can't snorkel. I certainly can't scuba. BUT I can be amazed at the work done by Diveheart for people who are challenged in life, whether that be child, adult or vet. I do what I can to support the efforts of this great group because I see the results they create in the worlds of so many people. I can't make a change in a person's life by my own limited efforts, but I can provide what skills I have to move Diveheart forward. Just a poor video editor...

Working with Diveheart has been one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life. People with disabilities have limited opportunities for fun and excitement. Diveheart provides an experience for the disabled that has few equals. The thrill of swimming under water. The sense of accomplishment, doing something that even most able bodied people are unable to do, is beyond compare for participants and volunteers alike. An added bonus is many participants, with cognitive and physical disabilities, experience wonderful therapeutic benefits. The Diveheart crew is truly a family and each new participant becomes part of that family.

As a 63-year-old dive master I have been involved with Diveheart for the past several years. I am also past president of the American Association of Diving Program Administrators.(ADPA) This group is composed of dive safety officers from most of the public aquariums and marine parks in North America. in addition to working with members of our group,Diveheart has enabled many other organizations and nonprofits to help folks with disabilities all over the planet.I also was personally involved in facilitating the 1st blind and deaf diver in history on a dive trip in Cozumel 2 years ago. Spending a week with a diveheart team introducing divers with disabilities to the beauty , serenity, and adventure of diving was one of the high points in my 45 year diving career. You cannot overestimate the value of these experiences to the disabled divers or the divers fortunate enough to work with them. It was truly one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. If you love to dive, and use your skills for the good of others–volunteer with Diveheart. it can and will change your life.

Watched as my college daughter helped a wounded warrior do his first dive in a pool. He was a paraylized in a car accident. To see his joy and freedom in the water, and to see her pride in sharing her love of diving was a wonderful experience for all.

Diveheart has served my son who has autism well over the years. The volunteers are all super kind and generous with their time. They have helped my him to recognize that he can accomplish something he has never tried before. I will not forget how it brought happy tears to my eyes when he did make a dive under the water in a local swimming pool. Awesome work, Diveheart! You have helped raise my son's self-esteem in a fun way.

I found Diveheart as a way to continue my late husband's legacy as a dive instructor who worked with a disabled adult and opened the world to him. Jim and his team were incredible to see in action during a group trip to Bonaire and I was lucky to have been able to tag along. Clearly the divers had received extensive and careful instruction appropriate to their land based limitations - once they were in the water there were no limits it seemed! Kudos to Diveheart for opening the underwater world to so many.

As a PADI Divemaster, I LOVE to dive. It is by far when I am most at peace. It is exciting, exhilarating, and adventurous, as well as calming and beautiful. Jim Elliott and the Diveheart organization work wonders in bringing this fantastic sport to EVERYONE! By partnering with wounded warriors to assist our injured veterans, Diveheart allows our heroes to experience an amazing underwater world. With simple and sometimes complex adjustments to equipment and procedures, Diveheart allows our friends with disabilities experience the feeling of weightlessness and wonder of our lakes and oceans. Diveheart is a class act organization that is 100% about serving their clients and making a difference in their lives.

Diveheart has opened up a brand new world for my twin sons with Autism. Both boys are avid swimmers and are on a summer swim team, but Diveheart has shown them that moving slowly in the water allows you to see and experience so much more. My sons said that "breathing underwater is like being a fish and not having to come up for air". The Diveheart volunteers are caring, supportive and I felt completely at ease watching them in the water. Thank you to Jim and the whole Diveheart organization for offering "another way to share our beautiful planet".

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Seeing my boys smiling faces when they accomplished their first scuba learning experience.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

No changes needed. Keep up the fantastic and life changing work.

The Diveheart Instructors and Volunteers are bringing a whole new world to diving. My son with Autism was just certifed in Key Largo Florida on a Diveheart sponsored trip from Chicago. I went along as a long time diver (over 35 years) and was so moved by the experience that I signed up to be a certified buddy the next month. I now coordinate a SCUBA program at a local high school for children and adults with disabilities and disabled and wounded military. The smiles from the participants are moving.
