DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES SERVICE ORGANIZATION

Rating: 4.92 stars   12 reviews

Issues: Arts & Culture, Disabilities, Human Services

Location: DDSO Parkway Campus 5051 47th Avenue Sacramento CA 95824 USA

Mission: DDSO exists to enrich the quality of life for persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities by fostering individual growth, creativity, and artistic expression.
Results: Our long term sustainability goal was to purchase property that would not only house two of our programs and the DDSO Headquarter office, but would also provide facilities that the local community could also use. We were able to purchase property this past year, which not only opened up new possibilities for the community, but will allow us to build and use our resources to improve client services, instead of paying a landlord. Future plans include building new partnerships to develop funding to enhance and improve our new Parkway Campus community rental options which include: a Theater, Soccer Field, Gymnasium and future space for Artist/Musician studios.
Target demographics: A ‘developmental' disability is one attributable to mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. Clients at DDSO may also have Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, brain trauma, or other neurological disorders that have caused mental and physical disabilities before the age of eighteen.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Provide services to 4920 individuals per year
Geographic areas served: Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities located in Sacramento and San Joaquin Counties
Programs: Achievement, Development & Care (ADC) Alan Short Center (ADC) Alan Short Community Access Program (ASCAP) Community Integration Program (CIP) Employment Plus (E+) Short Center North (SCN) Short Center South (SCS) Transitions for Tomorrow (T2)

Hello! My name is Michael D. I attended the Alan Short Center for 23 years. I now attend Short Center South. I have been there 7 years this year. DDSO has given me the honor of being the MC for their awards dinner. I really enjoy working with DDSO. They work hard every day to keep their programs open in spite of the budget cuts. Thank you for helping us all to learn new things in life. A lot of people have asked me why I like DDSO. If you read this, you will know why. I really like what I do. I like all of the people here. Everyone is special. The staff and the students may have their ups and downs but that's OK. I think DDSO is the best! I'd like to make a special award and present it to DDSO to say thank you for your support!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping me to improve my life.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

my classes, working, performing and MCing the awards dinners.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Great! They really help.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

be even better and we wouldn't have to worry about any of the programs closing down.

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

About every week

I volunteered as an teachers assistant for the video production class at Employment Plus, a program within DDSO. I enjoyed watching the creative process that the consumers went through in creating their various videos. At the time, they didn't have enough computer systems for me to assist in helping teach what I know about video editing. I would suggest getting more computers so other volunteers could come in and assist with their personal knowledge and experience. Overall, I had a good time.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing how it affects the lives of the consumers they work with.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the creativity, fun and unique experience they bring to their consumers.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the teachers/job coaches that work with the consumers.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

give state of the art training to those with developmental disabilities.

Ways to make it better...

they had more and updated equipment for the consumers and volunteers

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding to the the items they need to make a difference.

One thing I'd also say is that...

How frequently have you been involved with the organization?

One time
