I am disabled on a very low fixed income. I have no dental insurance, because even though it seems that older people would be one of the age groups most in need of dental (and vision) services, medicare does not provide dental (or vision) benefits to recipients. I could never afford any dental care at all, as I have less than $100 a month to live on after paying monthly bills and buying medications for the 3 autoimmune diseases that I have (including arthritis both feet and back and a rare blood vessel disease) and a completely destroyed thyroid (according to the endocrinologist)from a condition called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
I learned about Dentistry from the Heart last year and although there are often very long waits to be seen, dentist offices donate their time and staff and volunteers also help to provide dental services that patients could not afford. I am on 3 medications that cause "Dry Mouth" which causes cavities even though I regularly brush, use mouthwash and floss. I would be in pain every day of my life with multiple dental problems if not for being able to attend these Dentistry from the Heart days in my city. Each patient can have one dental service of their choice - one extraction, or one tooth filled or a cleaning. While this may not seem like much for people like me with several cavities due to health conditions, it allows a greater number of people to be seen. Without Dentistry from the Heart, I would be in emergency rooms getting extractions instead of being able to save the majority of my teeth that develop cavities due to my health-related conditions and medications. Thank you Dentistry from the Heart for being such a godsend! D. Hicks
My office recently participated in a "Dentistry from the Heart" free day of dental care. While the idea behind this non-profit organization is a very worthwhile one; their structure, follow-through, and professionalism is severely lacking. We still have NO IDEA where our $1,000 went! We seem to have paid them for a couple of t-shirts and the use of their slogan. After our hefty fee was paid, we tried contacting them with questions many times. We were told they were just "too busy" to handle running their office plus this on the side, yet their are no paid staff on the 990. Hmmm...where on earth does $668,000 go??? My suggestion? Save your money!! Run your own free dental care day. Put up some free flyers around town and call your local health department. Call the news and paper--they will be happy to advertise for you--for free!!!
