Compass Family Services serves families confronting poverty and homelessness by supporting their efforts to achieve stability and self-sufficiency.

Compass Family Services, known until 1995 as Travelers Aid San Francisco, was established in 1914 to provide assistance to newcomers to the city, particularly young women and girls drawn by the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (1915). Since that time, Compass has served a wide range of populations from stranded travelers to refugees to homeless families, but a common denominator among the various groups has been a need for help in an often unfriendly urban environment.

Target demographics:

Low-income and homeless families

Geographic areas served:

San Francisco, CA

Compass Family Services creates a strong safety net for homeless and at-risk families by providing a broad continuum of services that help our clients find and maintain stable housing and build strong families. Compass' six programs for families are: Compass Connecting Point – The citywide access center for all families seeking shelter in San Francisco. Compass Family Shelter – A homeless shelter for families with private rooms and baths, plus prevention and aftercare services. Compass SF HOME - Compass' homelessness prevention program that provides qualifying families with short term rental subsidies and support. Compass Family Resource Center - A family resource center providing counseling and education to support healthy parent-child relationships. Compass Clara House – A two-year transitional housing program with individual family apartments, plus intensive support services and on site childcare. Compass Children's Center – Compass’ model child development and education center for children from homeless and very low-income families.

I was a client in the transitional program of COMPASS. My family survived here in San Francisco because of the help and support of COMPASS Community Services. The staff was very supportive, very patient and understood my situation. COMPASS supported me financially and materially. I received school supplies and guidance during my trainings. Compass staff especially the Transitional Program helped me turn my life around. Today I am self sufficient because of the assistance of COMPASS. Thank you so much COMPASS!!!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

2004 when I graduated from Clara House and moved to a permanent housing with my family.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Among all the assistance of Clara House staff, The Education Coordinator also helped me with the school registration process, supported me throughout my training, and was present on my graduation day.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful and patient. They provided non judgmental services to every client without any discrimination; moreover the staff and volunteers were culturally competent this is the most reason why COMPASS has more clients than any other program in San Francisco

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help support more families in COMPASS shelter and in its Transitional Program. It could help more families in PPP getting in the permanent house by paying their deposit. It could help serve more Connecting Point clients by providing them with more food, diapers, clothing, tokens, and personal hygiene because they are homeless. It could help the TLC by registering more homeless students in the childcare for free.
