I heard about the adopt a family for Christmas through my daughter Carrie who works there. Every year I look forward to seeing who my new family is and head right out the door to shop. The lists are great, so complete and helpful. Everyone involved has been very sweet in answering all my questions. The new method of delivery is a lot better. All on one day at one place and having help from people to get all the gifts from your car to the building. I've been involved with the program ever since Erica started it. Each year I look forward to buying for the little ones especially. It is the highlight of the Christmas season.

The Great!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the joy of buying presents for the little ones

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

fabulous, friendly and fun. Not too mention competent

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

continue with all it's good programs. They know how to put the money to good use.

Ways to make it better...

couldn't hae been better

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

money. They know how to put it to good use but with the economy the way it is, it is tough.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I love the opportunity to help these people who so need support in getting on their feet.

As a volunteer and now board member, I can attest to the determined and effective efforts of the Compass staff. Compass's strategy to help families who may become homeless, before they become homeless is essential to helping the working poor of San Francisco. It is telling that people assisted in this situation follow through in giving back to Compass. All of the programs offered interconnect to make Compass a strong antidote to the cycle of poverty. Examples are: Teachers at the Tenderloin childcare center use state of the art methods to help children in difficult situation; including occupational therapy. Families struggling with addiction issues are assisted in comprehensive and holistic manner to get their lives on track. It is difficult to cover all of the beneficial elements of Compass's umbrella offers in a short format.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

presentations by Compass clients who are graduating from the programs, as well as board presentations.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase the number of case workers so that more people could be assisted. Also, develop the proper data base to track families across many data fields to insure focused, incisive assistance.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing and hearing first hand how the efforts by Compass staff have transformed lives.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

thorough, conscientious and caring.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

put even more of its energy toward breaking the cycle of poverty through expansion and implementation of its methods to more people in need. Compass is already very lean on the admin side, a comprehensive data base is necessary to assist properly.

Ways to make it better...

we could raise more funds to support more of San Francisco's working poor.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of affordable housing in San Francisco.

My husband and I have volunteered over the past 6 years for various events. As community members, we support the work that Compass is doing and tell our friends about the compassionate staff and important services that they provide. We feel that Compass needs more visibility in order to be able to maintain and increase its very critical work.

I have been involved with Compass on a number of levels over the past twenty years. I originally worked alongside them advocating for homeless families and youth in San Francisco when I worked at another agency. When I began a non-profit consulting business, I helped them on a grant to secure federal funding for Clara House, their transitional housing facility for homeless families. I've adopted families during their holiday season and most recently I've been involved volunteering to secure donated furniture deliver it to the homes of newly housed families.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Watching Compass assume a leadership role (if not THE leadership role) in helping families to end the cycle of homelessness. They are doing everything they can to help these families in crisis!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

incredibly dedicated and knowledgeable about the difficulties faced by the families they serve.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help partner with a non-profit developer to fund additional housing and provide support services to get more families off the streets or out of their cars. It could also provide more daycare for the families trying to find or hold on to jobs

until this past year, my experience with compass has primarily been that of a contributor.....however, with a group of "compass" supporters, we found a way to continue the help that compass provides...after compass doing the "hard" work of finding appropriate housing for families that are homeless, we have decided to furnish houses for those most needy.....this is done through donations of gently used household items and/or financial contributions. we hope our efforts support the incredible ongoing efforts of compass to make life more comfortable to those families in need.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

meeting and furnishing homes for the families that compass has found housing for...the adults and children in these families have been sooo helpful and appreciative of the work that the compass volunteers do.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

making life easier for those that truly need the help.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated and truly committed to their work.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

find housing for every parent with a child and be sure that both the parent and the child had the support structure to better their lives through their own hard work!

Ways to make it better...

we could help more people in need!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

finding appropriate housing for the number of homeless families in our area.

One thing I'd also say is that...

nothing makes one happier than watching a family, either the parents or children, feel comfortable in their newly found home!

I was a client in the transitional program of COMPASS. My family survived here in San Francisco because of the help and support of COMPASS Community Services. The staff was very supportive, very patient and understood my situation. COMPASS supported me financially and materially. I received school supplies and guidance during my trainings. Compass staff especially the Transitional Program helped me turn my life around. Today I am self sufficient because of the assistance of COMPASS. Thank you so much COMPASS!!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

2004 when I graduated from Clara House and moved to a permanent housing with my family.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Among all the assistance of Clara House staff, The Education Coordinator also helped me with the school registration process, supported me throughout my training, and was present on my graduation day.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful and patient. They provided non judgmental services to every client without any discrimination; moreover the staff and volunteers were culturally competent this is the most reason why COMPASS has more clients than any other program in San Francisco

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help support more families in COMPASS shelter and in its Transitional Program. It could help more families in PPP getting in the permanent house by paying their deposit. It could help serve more Connecting Point clients by providing them with more food, diapers, clothing, tokens, and personal hygiene because they are homeless. It could help the TLC by registering more homeless students in the childcare for free.

I have worked for several non-profits in the past and after seeing what Compass does for underprivileged families in San Francisco I was inspired to do more. This organization provides the kind of opportunities and resources that families need to raise healthy, happy children; reduce homelessness; provide housing options; and ensure a bright future for inner City families. Programs like Connecting Point, The Positive Parenthood Project, and the annual Adopt-a-Family program make these missions possible. Compass is one organization making the world a better place in which to live. I applaud their significant and on-going efforts and contributions to the City of San Francisco.

I spent a day with Administrative Coordinator Diana Johnson to understand the operations of the organization and how their programs are implemented in order to better serve the families I was working with. Compass is a true leader in this field.

Compass is a well-run, efficient, and effective organization with a loyal staff (many of whom have been with the agency over ten years--unheard of in social services). It treats its clients with respect and dignity, and goes above and beyond to help them avoid homelessness or gain permanent housing, while addressing their core needs. I have been on the board of directors for about 20 years and at one point when I thought I would look into getting involved in another nonprofit, I couldn't find one that does its job as well as Compass, so I stayed on!

I have only had positive experiences at the Tenderloin Childcare Center. I have visited to volunteer and to shadow the Administrative Coordinator Diana Johnson. Everyone on staff was warm and professional. The day care and class rooms were filled with nothing but smiling faces, and happy (if not rambunctious) children. The center provides a much needed service to our most vulnerable residences in one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in San Francisco.
