Toni Young and her team run a very tight ship and are very dedicated to contribute to women's weallness and empowering the black community. They have engaged in many public health programs targeting underserved and marginalized populations and are on the forefront of culturally grounded approaches for addressing the needs of these communities. CEG certainly has my vote and I hope to work with them in the future.

CEG targets an often under-served community, African Americans who may or may not be HIV positive, who may or may not be substance users and who more often than not fall in a lower socio-economic strata. What's admirable about CEG's work is their never ending effort to empower their clients to take control of their own lives. Many of these clients eventually do turn their lives around and become leaders within their networks or become staff members in CEG or other community based organizations. Another admirable quality of CEG's work is their focus on bridging the divide between communities of color and mainstream research institutions. Under the guidance of the executive director, Ms. Young, CEG has established fairly equitable relationships with several institutions not necessarily accustomed to partnering with community based organizations. The director understands the research landscape thoroughly and knows that if research cohorts do not adequately represent the racial and ethnic make up of our society, the research results may be skewed. Those skewed results may adversely impact communities of color. CEG's challenges have less to do with the organizational structure and more to do with some cultural and financial constraints. CEG has had to expand its scope of service to remain viable in the face of shrinking grant and donor money as well as political and social challenges. So far, the expansion has not hindered CEG's service delivery. My concern is that in time, women's services will may be too diluted to address women's particular needs. Overall, Washington, DC is fortunate to have CEG among its service providers. Ms. Young, is a tireless advocate for her clients in an era when other similar agencies are closing their doors.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my work on programs and policy addressing racial and ethnic minority participation (researchers and participants) in HIV research and my work on improving HIV-related information dissemination among women of color.

I have attended focus groups and workshops held and sometimes sponsored by CEG and found through my association with Toni that she and the organization are dedicated and committed to making a difference in the Washington/Metropolitan area in regards to the empowerment of women as well as those affected by and infected with the HIV virus. The organization is also involved with revolutionary technologies on the horizon in the area of microbicides as the research progress. An innovative and informative asset in the community.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Gaining knowledge and insight in the area of ongoing research regarding the efforts on a global scale to develop microbicides in the effort to combat the infection and spread of HIV/AIDS in Africa and other nations developed and underdeveloped.
