If you think that this 1 organization is a scam I can give you the names of several more. The biggest problem in this country right now is the fact that senior citizens are preyed upon by these people and when they give, they get more responses to give more. I have a family member in an AFC with dementia who prior to living there wrote literally thousands of dollars worth of checks to these kinds of 'charities.' She practically blew through her savings and was basically told by the USPS in her town that she had to figure something else with her mail because the volume of mail was so overwhelming they couldn't put it in her PO box. When I changed her address she continues to get mail, albeit not the volume she was receiving. When I checked in to this I found out that there are lists of names out there being sold on the open market for a price. I just want someone to tell me how we can stop this. Thanks for the time.

I have tried repeatedly (mailing back 14 requests so far) to have my mothers name removed from this organizations solicitation list. So far each request has been ignored and we keep getting expensive packets (color photos, cash, self-addressed stamped envelopes). These materials obviously cost a fortune to send, but even after repeated prompting "no one is home" at this apparently less-than-efficient charity "front." We feel it is unethical to continue to send materials after being repeatedly asked to be removed from the list. It is my feeling that the Coalition should spend more money on our servicemen and less on mailing me information that goes directly into the trash. I would not recommend this fly-by-night organization to anyone.

I have just received at least my fifth request for a donation from this charity, mailed under the aegis of Maj. Gen. John K. Singlaub, and including as usual a $1 bill. I have repeatedly asked them to remove my name from their mailing list, to no avail. I am a relatively low-income retiree, have been giving more than I can afford to worthy causes for years, and simply cannot afford to add yet another. I also object strongly to the dollar bill inclusion as a blatant use of "moral force" to try to coerce a reply, return of their cash plus a healthy contribution! I would add that I'm concerned they may be taking in an undue amount of money because they are playing on the public's sympathy for veterans, and this is a powerful draw.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

repeated and unwanted mailings requesting donations, with no response to my requests to take me off their mailing list. Having just checked your lower-third rating I'm beginning to consider them as pretty close to a scam.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

eliminate it or see that at least 75% of their intake goes directly to the veterans they claim to serve. I would also want them to stop sending cash with their fund requests.

Mr. Chapin, ex-President of this "charity", is under indictment in the Help Hospitalized Veterans case & if convicted belongs in jail. General Singlaub, who is paid to allow his name to be used as front-man for this "charity", deserves to be publicly outed to the military families used as bait to enrich the founders of this despicable get-rich-quick scheme.

After reviewing mailings sent to my elderly mother from this organization, I cannot believe the depths to which they stoop to further their scam. If there is a report, review or news article that is positive towards this group I haven't been able to find it. Perhaps the comment in a Congressional hearing from the Coalition to Salute Americas Heroes founder that "they would go out of business" if the public knew the truth about their organization speaks volumes about this operation and their tactics.

Disgusting. After reviewing the latest tax return available on Guidestar, I'd like my money back. It's not a lot of money to some folks, but my $135 was intended to help vets - not be wasted. It looks like less than 10 cents on the dollar goes to help vets. These people should be in jail.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Spend at least 90% of money raised to help vets, not to raise more money.

I agree with the first post. I give to a lot of veterans organization as a retired military person. I'm not going to say they all don't do some good in some way but you still have to be careful. When they are only getting a one star there is a reason. Their operating expenses are way out of line with what they are actually giving out to help the vets. There are a lot better ones out there to give to,do your research.

I do believe that was the first time that we have received a request from this organization. As soon as I saw a dollar bill paper clipped to the request I went to Charity Navagator. It is hard to call this organization a charity. I cannot understand how these former high military officers can allow their names to be used in what is almost a scam. I hope they read the comments.

Hello. I had a great experience volunteering with the Coalition to Salute America's Heroes at their Road to Recovery Conference. They hold it once a year and this past year it was in Orlando where I live so it was practical for me to help out where I could. I was impressed with the scope and quality of the workshops these veterans at the Coalition lined up for their fellow injured comrades. I like the work they're doing supporting our injured troops.

My neighbor is a wounded soldier from Operation Iraqi Freedom. Injured in 2006, but was in the hospital for who knows how long, seemed like years. Times were clearly tough for him and his family and he wouldn’t open up much about it. In retrospect I’m certain they were having financial troubles. Well him and his wife and the kids came back from the Coalition’s conference one year ago with a refreshed attitude. Well at least the soldier did because his wife is always so positive, kids too. I don’t know in exactly how many ways they were helped, his spouse mainly mentioned disability benefits and percentage disability being adjusted to a higher percentage. He lost his right leg below the shin and a few other injuries and went thru over 20 surgeries. I don’t know how you get disability adjusted to correct levels, but somehow the Coalition got this done for them when they had being trying to handle it for over 3 or 4 years and its helped this young couple and their family tremendously. So what do you think I did the very day his spouse told me about the conference? I donated to this group because I saw firsthand what a real impact their work can have on deserving people like this. I figured it was the least I could do to help individuals (such as my neighbor) who have done so much for America.

My neighbor is a wounded soldier from the Iraq War. He's been helped by the Coalition and I helped give also because of what I saw.

I wouldn't change a thing with them. Just wish I could give more.
