About two years ago I retired from my fulltime job and was looking for an organization to volunteer with. After working for 40 years as a bookkeeper, I was looking for something "out of an office", so I visited the many websites of several NYC organizations that we were donating to over the years and found the City Meals on Wheels Friendly Volunteer program -- perfect for me. My first assignment in Queens was with an elderly couple whose daughters lived out of the city, but who did not want to leave their own home in Flushing. He was 97 and she was 92. I visited them once or twice a week for one and one half years before they both passed and it was definitely one of the best experiences of my life. Fortunately they both passed quickly and painlessly. I now visit three more elderly Queens residents, two who live locally in my neighborhood, the third who lives in Fresh Meadows. Three totally different personalities, three totally different needs, this experience again is so fulfilling that I cannot even imagine what my life would be like without this opportunity to visit them.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

sensational. The office staff and leaders have made sure I was connected with the Queens coordinator so I could do the volunteering I was interested in. And my coordinator in Queens is tops.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

reach out to more retirees like myself to volunteer.

I wanted to get more involved with Citymeals-on-Wheels because my company is very actively associated with the organization. It only took one volunteer experience last November to understand why we are so committed to this outstanding organization. Citymeals is the perfect charity. Not only is the staff incredibly professional and friendly, as a volunteer, donor or industry supporter - you can see tangible results. You know your donation and time are being put to good use, feeding our homebound elderly neighbors. I wanted to take an even more active leadership role and have assisted in the establishment of Citymeals' new Young Professionals group. This has allowed me to connect with other likeminded individuals - all for a very worthwhile cause. we combine volunteer outings with fundraising events for a 360 degree perspective of Citymeals' mission. I am proud to be part of the Citymeals family and encourage all my friends and family to become actively involved.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The range of experiences Citymeals provides from glittering restaurant galas to weekend delivery experiences. I love going on meal deliveries and meeting our elderly neighbors who benefit from this program.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Incredibly friendly, professional and dedicated to what they do. This is a caring and passionate group of people.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time to devote to regular volunteer outings in addition to the fundraising events.

I've worked with hundreds of nonprofits - both personally and professionally - and Citymeals-On-Wheels is by far one of my favorites. The staff with whom I have interacted is incredibly professional, organized and smart and the volunteer projects are highly impactful. As a member of the newly-formed Young Professionals' Committee, I feel like I have had the opportunity to "make a difference" in a number of ways, including participating on meal deliveries, attending fundraisers and making holiday cards for Citymeals' clients. The Committee has also given me the chance to meet new people and expand my network. I know that the financial support I've given to Citymeals has been money well spent and the time I've donated has been incredibly worthwhile.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I couldn't narrow it down to one thing -- certainly feeding people is at the top of the list; but the opportunity to interact with a top-notch staff and other caring individuals has been great

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

incredible -- the staff is a pleasure to work with - they don't ask anything of volunteers they wouldn't do themselves and they are incredibly grateful for all contributions - both time & money

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

feed more people!

Ways to make it better...

I had started volunteering with them sooner

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Its hard to get "younger" people interested in this mission - not as "sexy" as some causes. No one likes to think about getting older and especially the concept of being alone and unable to care for yourself.

I did a one-time meal delivery with Citymeals--well I thought one time, but I've volunteered since and will continue to do so. It's great to see how a simple meal and short conversation makes a real difference in someone's life.
