This is one of the Best NY Meals program we have in NYC. Other then 1 complaint I see & hear only good things about this agency. The 1 problem is the salary pid to Ms. Marcia Stein. $285,340 + for an agency that should use all availible funds to help the hungry I think $285,000+ is just way to much. I see other agencies who solicite public money pay their Presidents (or what-ever they call themselves) do it for FAR less money. I find it hard to want to give my hard earned money when I see how much she's paid for a job that many others do for far less. It makes me think 2-3 times before I donate. I guess I would give more or more often if this wasn't such a sticking point.

Citymeals offers flexible scheduling and many ways to contribute whether that's delivering meals, visiting the elderly, replying to letters or offering the organization administrative assistance during particularly high volume periods. The staff at Citymeals are supportive and always on hand to answer questions. You really feel like you make a difference and the impact you make is instantaneous. When you ring a senior's doorbell, you can see how grateful they are that you took the time to make sure they have food for the next few days.

Citymeals offers a flexible volunteer schedule and various ways to contribute to their cause. I am a part of and am particularly fond of their Young Professionals program, which hosts monthly events where volunteers get to know each other by delivering meals together and then having brunch or drinks afterward. Citymeals also provides multiple ways to contribute from meal delivery to letter writing so we are not restricted in the ways we can help. The Citymeals administrators and organizers that I've met have been approachable, helpful, and always prepared to guide beginner volunteers.

For about the last year, my husband and I have delivered meals with our son (now 19 months old) every other Saturday. I also write letters to seniors as part of the Senior Script program. What I love about this organization is that they make it EASY to volunteer. We can sign up to deliver meals on as many Saturdays (and other holidays) as we like on a week to week basis. If we are out of town or not available, we are not responsible for finding our replacement. The seniors that we see on Saturdays are so grateful for the meals and the few minutes of chit chat. They love to meet the baby and ask questions about him. He really makes their day! If you are looking for a volunteer opportunity with kids of any age, this one is GREAT! The Senior Script program is also easy for me to do, as I can write the letters after my son is in bed. I look forward to getting my son involved in writing letters and making holiday cards when he is a bit older. The staff at Citymeals is organized and professional.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The seniors absolutely love the human contact and they appreciate the meals. Many live in walk-ups and cannot negotiate stairs, so the volunteers are the only people who come to check on them. A smile and kind word makes their day.

My husband and I can volunteer together, spend time with our son, get a little exercise, and make someone's day, all in 2 hours on a Saturday morning.

Working with this organization has been extremely rewarding. The personel is professsional, caring and informative. But the real "rush" is feeling the immense appreciation and gratitude we get from each home-bound recipient. One woman who lives in a steep walk-up took my hand and thanked me profusely for walking up so many stairs to bring her a meal. The stories are too many to mention, but the smiles are all the same and each one warms your heart.

Lovely, thoughtful, well run organization. Having lived in NYC for the last 10 years, I've tried out my fair share of volunteer projects, and find Citymeals to be effective and efficient in achieving its goals, and also in affording its volunteers the ability to connect with clients. A+

I have been volunteering for City Meals on Wheels, on and off, for over a year and a half. The homebound elderly certainly do appreciate this service and it is both rewarding and fulfilling to assist a nonprofit organization such as City Meals on Wheels.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

receiving positive feedback from the eldely, some of which remember your face from time to time. I have also had a friend recently donate $100 to City Meals on Wheels because he knew this organization was one I volunteered for.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

create a blog or website which has an updated calendar for each Meals on Wheels location, how many volunteers they have for each day/weekend, etc.. so that I could help the center that needs volunteers the most vs. returning to the same center.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

helpiing the homebound elderly receive meals and seeing how happy they are to converse with a person/volunteer.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Friendly, appreciative and communicated well.

Ways to make it better...

My experiences are good most of the time. Occasionally there will be 1-2 typo's on the delivery/address sheet.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Volunteers and funding

I have volunteered with Citymeals-on-Wheels since 2001. I started originally delivering meals in the West Village area every Saturday. The deliveries contained meals for both Saturday and Sunday. I realized how vital CityMeals-on-Wheels deliveries are when I would reached the top of a 4 floor walk-up rather winded to find a elderly gentleman or lady very excited and so appreciative for the food and my efforts. They were like little birds perched too high in the trees unable to fly on their own. This was what home-bound means. I also felt that the volunteers were often times the only human interaction they would have that day. I also wondered, without this warm food, what would they eat? Later in 2001, I became a Citymeals-on-Wheels Senior Script volunteer. I read and responded to thank you notes and letters written by our food recipients. I heard in their written words just how valuable the food and fellowship that City Meals-on-Wheels delivers really is. I have worked with Vivenne and Shelia, Citymeals-on-Wheels volunteer coorindators, since 2001 and they are truly wonderful to work with. Volunteering with Citymeals-on-Wheels has been rewarding, fulfilling and always a pleasure. It sounds like a cliche, but it is true, I have received so much more than I have given. I feel this would be the same for anyone who has the opportunity to volunteer with Citymeals-on-Wheels

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

reading the words and seeing the smiles of the elderly New Yorkers who Citymeals-on-Wheels has touched.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Help erradicate hungry and loneliness for the bulk of home-bound New Yorkers. Many more New Yorkers would know more the services offered by Citymeals-on-Wheels and take advantage of this wonderful organization's generosity.

I am so happy to be a volunteer with City Meals on Wheels. My daughter and I began delivering meals to homebound seniors when my daughter was 12 years old. She is now 21 and we still enjoy doing it together. We figure over the years, we've delivered thousands of meals and have helped our seniors in NYC stay healthy and well. We are honored to work with City Meals every time!

This program has allowed my school based program to place interns with them. The interns have learned so much in such a short time. The staff is both friendly and supportive. It's been a lovely partnership!
