I was a pastoral intern at the Church of Mary Magdalene while studying at Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry. It was a life-changing year for me. A passion for walking with women is the key to Mary's Place/CoMM - this is not just another social service agency- this is a community. There is a sense of accountability and purpose that undergird the hard work of holding together in difficult times. From the front-line staff to the administrators, the office support to the song leaders/music director - these are women who rely on the gifts of the community to see them through the day. In addition, worship at CoMM is like no where I have attended. Participation is encouraged in ways that honor where each person is - en route to wholeness no matter how long the journey. I have been blessed by the women of Mary's and am grateful for their ministry to each other and the community at large.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

preparation to be a stronger, more flexible pastor/pastoral care provider.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

acceptance and challenge. I was welcomed into a community where I was the minority as a white, middle class, educated, housed woman. I was embraced while also being held accountable for my privilege.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

tenacious, strong, not always easy, committed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

provide a welcoming, hospitable environment where women without homes could find all the resources they need to return to the community-at-large AND women in homes could continue to find support and friendships that help to maintain housing.

I have been volunteering for 2 years. The things that impress me about Marys Place are: They don't allow the women to sleep in the day facility. They have group talks. The women are able to cook their own food when its their turn and clean up after themselves. They have the women earn points to be able to purchase things from Bon Mary (lingerie). This helps the women build respect for themselves. Former homeless women now work parttime in the office and sorting donations. This practice could be expanded if resources were available.

Kind & Patient

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Own its own facility and put more energy into getting women independant instead of worrying about keeping their own doors open.

I have followed Mary's Place for the last year or so. It is an amazing organization that serves some of the most vulnerable people in Seattle and the region. It is the only day shelter that takes women and children. They serve so many women with so many services.

I was lucky enough to be a volunteer serving the women of Church of Mary Magdalene their Thanksgiving Dinner. It was a great experience to meet so many incredible women who were so thankful for the warm meal. This organization does amazing work and not only is providing warm and food part of what they do - the love and genuine caring hearts they have really are the critical gifts given! Keep up the great work!

Every time I come to Mary's Place the staff and volunteers are working tirelessly to make the lives of the women they serve better. I have met countless wonderful people here from program participants and staff that I see semi regularly to volunteers that I've only met once; everyone has touched my heart and I am very thankful. Currently I am a student and so am limited with the time I can give, but I hope to continue to help whenever I can for as long as I live in the Seattle area.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing women with children get emergency housing when they need it most. I've seen Marty and the other staff bend over backward to find housing in a seemingly hopeless situation and miraculously it worked!!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

have a permanent location and not be subject to the whims of the powers that be to continue their work.

Although I now live in Iowa, I still support the Church of Mary Magdalene and Mary's Place. I have supported them since Jean Kim first started the ministry. The open and accepting atmosphere, the caring work and the great outcomes make this church really special. One of the participants of the church, Pat Thompson, personifies how Mary Magdalene changes people. Although Pat is now deceased, I remember her enthusiasm when selling the hand made goods prepared by the women, at Christmas markets in churches. At that time she had achieved an apartment and was doing well, but still attended the programs because they gave her a sense of connectedness. It is this sense of community that Mary's place achieves that make it such a great welcoming hospitality center,

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the sense of joy that can be found even in such difficult circumstances.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

dedicated and caring. Truly and innately wanting to provide an atmosphere where the women could discover their strengths and turn their circumstances around.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

establish a permanent place to house their organization and build the kind a program that only a permanent home can provide. They have done miracles with what they have but a permanent place would allow focus on program and not on housing for the program.

Ways to make it better...

I had lived in Seattle or closer so I could have spent more time volunteering at Mary's Place.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Finding a permanent place to exist. The homeless women should know that the "home" they experience will always be there for homeless women.

I have been involved as a volunteer with the Church of Mary Magdalene for more than fifteen years. With other women I have helped prepare meals, collected needed hygiene items, even cleaned the kitchen and bathroom when the group met at First United Methodist Church in Seattle. I have attend the Annual Teas with a group from my church and purchased and helped sell the "cover girl" calendar which was produced some years ago. I have been greatly touched by the women's stories during their Saturday worship services. This program is consistently making a difference in the lives of women and children in need and those of us who have the opportunity to serve them. I have seen some of the women move into transitional housing and get permanent jobs while continuing to grow spiritually in the group. The pastoral care at the Church of Mary Magdalene has always been extremely supportive and life changing. Currently there is a need for a clean permanent home on the "free bus route" in Seattle. This program must receive the necessary support to continue their fine work. .

Mary Magdalene not only nourishes the body, it feeds the soul--not just for the women who come for fellowship, a meal and counseling but the volunteers. And they have a fantastic women's choir!

My first contact was when my church served lunch on Saturdays, when a friend at church served as an intern at Church of Mary Magdalene. I was so impressed I became a donor. When I moved close to CoMM, I served on the Saturdays my new church, as well as my old church, served lunch. I also served Christmas dinner to the homeless. I've attended the fundraising teas, and in the last few years have made jewelry to be auctioned off at the Hats and Tea. I participate in lingerie parties at my church and collect toiletries and socks for CoMM. I've written to members of the King Co. Council and Seattle City Council, and letters to the editor of the Seattle Times in support of CoMM. Also written to my church in support of a grant when CoMM was a candidate (CoMM didn't get it, unfortunately).

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Watching some of the women grow over the years.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Provide it enough stability so that it can get its feet on the ground. That means money, a building, and long term leadership.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Seeing the women disprove the bad stereotypes about who the homeless are

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Varied, diverse, faithful, full of integrity and love.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Buy land and build a building that was both what it needs now and what it can project it will need in the future. Hire consultants to help in this project, or find those who will volunteer their services.

Ways to make it better...

Those in power would take just one day to spend at CoMM to see the work being done there and who the women and children really truly are and what their dreams are.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Financial, and the good will of those in power in the City and the County.

One thing I'd also say is that...

The powerful in the City doesn't care enough about ending homelessness. So those of us who do care have to do more.
