I found this Nonprofit to be an excellent resource for music education. I highly recommend the Childrens Music Foundation.
I had an opportunity to review the music program implemented at one of the elementary schools in Seattle that no longer had any music for the school because of budget cuts. The program was a huge success and the teachers and children all were delighted to have it in place.
CMF has done an impressive job making music lessons accessible to teachers and parents. With this curriculum I see no reason our elementary children should lack the basic music and developmental skills any longer. An amazing staff with such passion for education and music dedicated extensive time and research to develop this amazing curriculum, made readily accessible to classrooms and homes. The CMF has created a wonderful opportunity for teachers; I would love to see it spread to schools nationwide.
After 23 yrs of teaching young children, I have had the opportunity to work as Program Director for CMF from the beginning. I strongly believe in providing young children with an educational experience that integrates the "Arts" and builds on their natural creativity. I have had the privilege of seeing children participate in the "First Note" curriculum and it's a joy to see their faces light up with the excitement they feel playing an instrument and moving to the music.
First Note is a standardized curriculum that will have young musicians, ages 5-7 singing, moving and playing percussion instruments from lesson 1 through lesson 30. At the end of the school year they will have mastered over 48 songs, several percussion instruments and an understanding of beat and rhythm that will create a foundation for the rest of their lives.
As a music teacher, I see every day the impact that music education has on children's lives! The Children's Music Foundation is working so hard to make sure that EVERY child receives the benefits of music education in thier lives. Please help support them!!!
The Children's Music Foundation has pioneered an experiential curriculum for kindergarten and first-grade teachers to engage their students in musical lessons, appreciation, and creation. CMF's approach builds from the pedagogical and neurological research that shows the connection between musical ability & appreciation, self-discipline, goal-setting, and mathematical aptitude and educational achievement as children move through grade school and beyond. It's an exciting and low-cost way to fuel the imaginations of kids and teachers and is helping transform classrooms into places where "creative juices" are nutured.
I have had the priviledge of working with the Board and staff of CMF for three months. These people are passionate about getting music education back into our schools and enriching the lives of children across the country. Research so clearly indicates a link between early and continuing music education and later success. The established connection between music and math alone makes me wonder why aren't we funding the arts in our schools??! The Children's Music Foundation isn't just wondering, they're DOING. By building a kid-friendly, teacher-ready curriculum for youngsters in Kindergarten and 1st Grade, they are putting their money, time, talent, love and energy into making this dream a reality. I can't recommend CMF highly enough for sheer determination, stretching of donor dollars, and willingness to go the extra mile to make this happen!
I recently joined the board of the Children's Music Foundation and am an ardent supporter of their critically important work in integrating music in the curriculum of schools. This is not just an after-school or summer program, it is aimed at helping children and their teachers to learn to love music, discover it as a tool for learning, and find enrichment in their lives. When budget cuts are made, the arts seem to be the first to go; however, they have been essential parts of educational systems of every country. The Children's Music Foundation is finding ways to restore it in ours! This is a truly pioneering organization!
