I was in a NYC police station beaten up with no where to turn, when I called Children of the Night's hotline. Two days later I was a resident. It was a home where I finally felt accepted and I could take advantage of being a kid. The shelter, which I thought I was going to run from, ended up being my home for four years. During my four years, I achieved an honorable mention in the Los Angeles County Science Fair, a scholarship to attend the Tyra Bank's summer camp, T-Zone. The follwoing summer Tyra requested me to attend her camp as a junior mentor. I also joined the Los Angeles Valley Community College speech and debate team and won several awards for my speeches. Before entering a university, I had accumlated 30 college units. I walked into the shelter as a victimized child who was taken advantage of sexually, physically, and mentally, but I graduated from the shelter, not only as a confident individual, but an individual to conquer my own destiny.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

through myself. I entered the shelter with no sense of direction. I successfully completed the program knowing I have goals and aspirations that are attainable.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

nobody could ever accomplish what Dr.Lee has done with this organization. She goes beyond the limits, to make sure everything is done right. One of my many fond memories was when Dr.Lee and her son helped me move into my college dorm.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

seeing myself accomplish things I thought were not feasible. I went from a 6th grade drop out, to being the youngest candidate in Speech and Debate competitions. The most enjoyable part will have to be the support unit Dr. Lee has developed at the shelter

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

the staff is welcoming. The principal of the school is AMAZING. When you think you are unable to accomplish something, you think wrong. We have wonderful doctors who provide their services and we are thankful to have them in our lives.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

it would be able to keep the doors open for those sexually exploited chidlren who fall through the cracks and help maintain the Children of the Night 10,000 plus alumni association.

Ways to make it better...

my experience there was a blessing. I wouldn't change anything about it!!!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

there are no challenges that Dr.Lee can not overcome, but the challenge that faces the organization is the lack of knowledge people have about American children who are sexually exploited in prostitution.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I would not be where I am today without Children of the Night!

I was beaten by a volunteer of Children of the Night as its founder and director, Lois Lee sat idly watching. Lee had orchestrated "a scheme" to lure me to Marina del Rey in an attempt to discredit the organization for children I was with. I was left with permanent back injuries as a result, which are the cause of excruciating pain to this day. The following is from the charge evaluation sheet as completed by the Los Angeles District Attorney's office. LOS ANGELES COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY CHARGE EVALUATION SHEET DA CASE NU. 90-0556 COMPLAINT DEPUTY JAMES E. KOLLER REVIEWING DEPUTY R. GUNSON I.I.B File Case No. 090-0031 "It is this Internal Affairs Investigation prepared by Sergeants T. Pradia and Sergeant E. Allen of the Internal Investigations Bureau that reveals the true nature of the conflict that occurred on November 9, 1989. Lois Lee, Executive Director of Children of the Night, devised a scheme whereby Donald Austen1 would be lured from his business to assist a non-existent runaway girl. Ms. Lee states the purpose of this fraud was to obtain a photograph of Mr. Austen. Ms. Lee's plan was to have her friend, Robert Christie, request Mr. Austen meet the feigned runaway at a restaurant. To activate this ruse Ms. Lee obtained the assistance of a private investigator, two photographers, two co-workers, three deputy sheriffs and the deputy's wife. These nine individuals were present at the restaurant before Mr. Austen's arrival. This investigation reveals that off-duty Sergeant Gil Parra contacted the Marina del Rey Station and requested assistance in making a traffic stop of Donald Austen, whom he described as a homicide suspect. The evidence suggests an intent to unlawfully detain Mr. Austen. It is also clear that Sergeant Gil Parra and off-duty Lieutenant William Salveson misrepresented the legitimacy of their investigation of Donald Austen to the Marina del Rey Station deputies. And, we note the plan as described by Lois Lee appears far too elaborate for its express purpose of obtaining photographs." I was not the only victim of Lee's "scheme." Also were former Oregon police officer, Margaret Weems, and her daughter, actress, Priscilla Weems, who were both volunteers with my charity. In 2008, Children of the Night sued both me and the charity for publishing on the Internet what Children of the Night did. After the UCLU took up our right to freedom of speech, COTN dismissed their claim.

fire the director/founder.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

nothing.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

brazen, ordering me to disband the charity I was with "so it wouldn't compete with [their] fundraising.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It did and it just wanted more.

Ways to make it better...

they had never existed

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

a lack of morality.

One thing I'd also say is that...

my life would have been a lot better and less wracked with pain had they never been.

Once a week for the past eight years I've taught journalism at the shelter's on-site school. Getting to know these kids and witnessing Lois Lee's dynamic dedication to their well being has inspired me to become a major donor as well as a volunteer. I am honored to have recently been asked to join the board. Without this program these children would have nowhere to be safe. Because of it, the sky's the limit for what they can achieve!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I've seen kids come in angry, lost and with no direction completely turn their lives around.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Nobody in the world could come close to accomplishing what Lois does.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Watching a new student come to my class who says they either can't or don't want to write - learn to express themselves on paper for the first time and then not be able to turn it off because they are enjoying the process so much.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

The principal who is also the only teacher of the entire school is able to teach each child individually and bring them up to their grade level and beyond in record time. The students love and admire her!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Rescue more kids and maintain the enormous alumnai association.

Ways to make it better...

I had more time and more money to give.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

There's no challenge that Lois Lee can't overcome. She's a miracle worker.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I get way more out of working for Children of the Night than I give.
