Launching the Center, much like democracy, can be a messy and time-gulping preoccupation. But those of us in the whirlwind of policy-making, planning, dreaming (and, yes, sweeping the floors and taking out the trash) can stand amazed at what has been accomplished by so many volunteers in such a short period of time. In an economic climate during which we see the fall of many beloved arts institutions, the Center for the Arts has been able to schedule a mortgage burning party. We have had artists clamor to come back to us. We have had some of the world's premier performers tell us that there is nothing like a Center audience: the sound system, the intimate space, the warmth of the reception. Whoever suggested our first official slogan, "Dream...then make it happen," could not have envisioned the growth and the diversity of activities housed under our roof. Kudos to all who have made it happen and continue to make it happen for the enrichment of our children and our children's children.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

planning the Paul Yaman First Steps Play Reading Series, thereby developing drafts of several scripts from budding playwrights.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

continue to build a broader base of volunteers.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

being able to use not only my creative but my managerial skills, and especially being able to be part of something bigger than myself. Sense of community!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

warm, knowledgeable, helpful, creative, and committed.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

safely preserve the historic and architectural gems of our facility (stained glass windows, brick pointing) and launch even more audacious programming for the future.

Ways to make it better...

can continue to build a broader base of volunteers.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

burnout of volunteers and the local economy.

One thing I'd also say is that...

the Center has attracted faraway fans via online sources who have brought their travel and tourism dollars to Central New York. Our proudest accomplishment remains that no two audiences are the same and we don't draw on the "same old, same old" folks.

I've lived in Homer for 3 years and in that time have become a huge fan and supporter of the Center for the Arts of Homer! Every concert that we've attended has been so impressive, acts from many countries. I've seen incredible, energetic acts like Eileen Ivers and Teada. I've had friends come from out of town for concerts at the center. Dan Hayes has great vision for the center - it's amazing to me what he's done for the center in such a short period of time. I think this venue could be A PREMIER 300-400 seat venue in NYS outside of NYC! Everyone who performs speaks to how much they love performing at the center and how much the appreciate the opportunity to perform there. I would never have thought that a town as small as Homer could provide concerts with such depth and diversity of talent. And at prices that make attendance affordable for everyone! Dan and the volunteers provide a wonderful welcoming atmosphere at the center for all events, including the free movies. What a joy to have a place like this in our community!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the incredible talent that Dan brings to the center. The Friday-night movies in the winter. (I saw Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen for the first time at the center!)

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

welcoming, hard-working, energentic and appreciative volunteers and staff who know first-hand what the center has to offer the community. One can see their love for the center in the effort they put in at all events.

I love that I could bring my son, even when young, and allow him to appreciate a variety of talent. The atmosphere is informal and intimate, the accoustics are great, and the people we've had the chance to enjoy have been universally wonderful. We're lucky to have such a resource located so conveniently.

I've attended several concerts at the Center for the Arts. I am amazed at the quality of the talent such a small community can attract. The setting is beautiful, the volunteers and staff friendly, and the music fantastic. It is such a great resource for the community.

We love this place! We are members and supporters and wish we could do more as volunteers, but it is a bit of a drive for us. If we lived closer to Homer we would be more involved. The old Baptist church a wonderful venue for concerts and performances; the additional space is used for community arts and education. There is a good variety of performances and it seems that the performers enjoy being there as much as the audience enjoys listening to them. Dan Hayes and crew have done a great job and we wish them continued success.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

concert nights - the reception beforehand, the art in the gallery at intermission, the concert itself, and, in many cases, the opportunity to chat with the performers after the show. And the dedication of the volunteers. It is very evident.

In the summer of 2008, I wanted to mount a month-long exhibition and have an evening program in recognition of Bloomsday, 16 June, the day of the action of James Joyce's novel "Ulysses," and from conception to completion, Homer's Center for the Arts was completely cooperative. Board member Ann Siegle not only took charge of writing a grant application to obtain partial support for the project (it was awarded) but she guided my efforts at every stage. Director Dan Hayes was equally helpful, personally taking charge of mounting the exhibition of posters, photographs, books, and artifacts. The evening program, which was very well attended and ran for nearly three hours, exceeded my hopes. I know I chose the right place for my project.

I have been to several shows over the past 3-4 years. It is a wonderful venue with great energy amongst the volunteers and of course Daniel Hayes. Just saw Eileen Ivers for the second time there. She, of course, rocked the house again! My companion and I are members and will continue to subscribe. I only wish I had the time to volunteer as well!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

perhaps expand the center into a second location in Syracuse and perhaps have the potential for more artists.

Ways to make it better...

my seat was better...

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

perhaps location (meaning I'd love to see Dan's staff do the same thing in Syracuse in addition to Homer), but I also love the village of Homer and the venue.

One thing I'd also say is that...

they do an awesome job now, things could only be better with more money coming in.

This community has been blessed with a first-class performance theatre, and an organization that somehow entices world-renowned entertainment to perform locally..... while continuing to provide opportunity for our vast reservoir of home-grown talents. What an asset...limited only by public support. I have attended many sold-out shows and hope that the word is finally getting out. This is something special for this area and should not be taken for granted.

The center lights the fire in our soul every other week in the Fall , Winter and Spring. The diverse entertainment provides a opportunity for us to rekindle our energy and appreciation of the performing arts in a small rural coummunity. I'm partial to the various Celtic performances. This includes Dougie McLean, Barra MacNeils, Elleen Ivers, Celtic Crossroads, The Glengarry Bhoys and many others. Performances that would not have been experienced except for the Center for the Arts.

fix the building and would not have to rely on grants or other outside support to survive.

We've attended some great concerts at the Center, particularly those by Johannes Linstead & his Flamenco Band. While there, we enjoyed the display in the Art Gallery too. The Center is a great regional asset. They allow outside groups to rent very nice meeting space. John Wyman Syacuse, NY
