Mission: At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature;to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
Results: According to the LA Weekly, we're "pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the most effective conservation organization in the country."
Programs: Climate Law Institute, Endangered Species, Oceans, Public Lands, Urban Wildlands

The Center for Biological Diversity has always been one of the most influential groups out there, actually affecting change in government policies. And they're really successful at stopping bad projects from hurting animals and plants that might otherwise go extinct. The Center helps save ALL species, not just endangered gray wolves and polar bears but also beetles and thistles. All species are necessary to save if we want to stop our planet's ecosystems from unraveling. And us people depend on those ecosystems for our own survival.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

This group is helping save endangered wolves in the Great Lakes region, where I live.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would try to help it grow even more without letting it compromise its current ideals. Amazingly, it's already grown a lot and hasn't compromised at all from what I can see.

This is a great organization - very focused and efficient, and very effective at achieving their aims. Their campaigns have ranged from those addressing the larger threats we face today (obvious example being the Deepwater Horizon well), to the focused and local, to the creative, such as distributing endangered species condoms! All around a terrific non-profit, and my favorite, as environmental organizations go.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

They do great follow-up work on the campaigns one takes part in, and several of said campaigns have resulted in very quick successes!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Good follow-up and the satisfaction of seeing several campaigns achieve success!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

I have not personally met any yet. All of my dealings so far have been online. They are quick at responding to messages, and kind.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Get a whole lot of good work done.

I was introduced to the Center for Biological Diversity by my 12 year old son. He discovered the Center through his interest in environmental issues and a school project to participate in saving Nevada’s Amargosa toads. From there, his own independent research and his admiration of the Center’s work, which is so beautifully documented on their website, led him to initiate a project that would raise money for them. What so impresses me about this organization is that they understand the importance of supporting and nurturing the passions of children who are coming of age and who need a forum and a structure to help channel their not insignificant energy to fix what we are so dangerously close to destroying. The Center treated him with respect and kindness as he organized a benefit concert to raise money to aid in the Gulf disaster. They highlighted his efforts on their Activist Spotlight page and were always responsive and courteous in their communications with him. As I parent, I was apprehensive that his idealism and his fierce desire to find a way to do some good, to be effective in bringing about positive changes, would be thwarted by an encounter with an impersonal bureaucracy. In my mind, this would be the worst possible outcome for him and would have been a very sad omen for all of us who hope to stem the tide of species loss and environmental damage. Thanks to the Center, quite the opposite happened. His concert was a success, he raised well over $1,000 for the Center and, to use a bit of a worn phase –he feels empowered. What this world needs now, more than anything, is youth that feel empowered to do public good and I congratulate the Center for having the wisdom to see the long view.

The Center for Biological Diversity has moved to the top of my donations list. I used to donate, support GreenPeace and some other environmental groups but now only support CBD as I feel this group is actually accomplishing things. Also, I am so impressed and in awe of this organization as it is the only environmental group which actually takes issue with overpopulation. I agree with them that this is the root cause of most of our major problems on Earth--too many people. And no other environmental organization even dares to mention it. The Center For Biological Diversity stands bravely alone in addressing this cause. Kudos CBD!

I get the emails from CBD and each time I read them I am more informed, hopeful and yet feel a sense of urgency about what is happening in our natural world. I am so thankful that CBD exists.

I like this charity because they really go after offenders by filing lawsuites, etc. They seem to have a good team of people that know what they're doing, and they actually get positive changes made. I thoroughly support them.

that they actually get things done, and effectively.

I think this organization utilizes their money in an efficient way. I like that they are concerned not only with the larger species but smaller ones as well such as the kangaroo rat.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

use the funds more efficiently than others. They don't seem to waste money on a lot of mailings or many emails for that matter. They are on top of the environmental issues and have won many lawsuits on behalf of their cause.

I was introduced to CBD when they opened a branch office in Idyllwild. I followed their progress in the local paper, noting how uncomfortable the conservatives were that this organization was in their back yard. I've been to a fundraising concert, read the very professional and informative newsletters, sent email and letters in support of their campaigns, etc.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the effective use of media, staff, and supporters in pressuring government agencies to protect wildlife.

I learned of the Center for Biological Diversity while researching for a course in graduate school. From that information, plus my member experience the past 2-3 years, I find that the Center for Biological Diversity does more for the health of Life on Earth (including homo sapiens) than any other environmental/ecological organization I have run across in 43 years of activism.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

The work of The Center for Biological Diversity was often used in graduate school reports/classes.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They are "to the point" and effective. Not a bunch of frills; they just do the work that needs to be done. They are efficient.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

My "meeting" has been via e-mail information. Again, this organization is highly effective, focused, efficient.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Change the perception and educate 20% of the American public such as to reach a critical mass to actually begin to save and repair the crucial ecosystems of the U.S. We could really become what we should be--an ethical example to other countries.
