Mission: At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature;to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
Results: According to the LA Weekly, we're "pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the most effective conservation organization in the country."
Programs: Climate Law Institute, Endangered Species, Oceans, Public Lands, Urban Wildlands

I am an environmental educator and leader of several environmental groups. I follow the Center's email newsletters and have used many of their stories in my day-to-day work. Their work is inspirational to me and reassuring in that someone is keeping a close watch on the nation's lawmakers. Center has been able to accomplish things that like-minded people all across America dream of doing, but haven't had the organization to before this. I applaud that the Center has taken a stance on population control. With overpopulation as arguably the biggest threat to our natural environment, it is essential that environmentalists and nonprofit groups are more vocal about this issue - the Center has been.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

their report on the possible environmental impacts of the military buildup in the Pacific.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

no changes.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the newsletters are well done.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

haven't met any.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do much more than they do now. Allow many more volunteers to be involved in the organization and foster an even larger environmental movement while expanding the already phenomenal work they do.

Ways to make it better...

the Center would have included the impacts to Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana islands in their report regarding Okinawa and the DOD military build-up. We needed all the help we could get to encourage public comment on the DEIA.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

lack of funding.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I would love to be the first CBC condom distributor in the CNMI! I've already signed up...please contact me!

I find CBD to be the most beneficial environmental organization existing that fits in to our modern effective advocacy tool for our depleting and harmed environment.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

educational tools and advocacy on environmental issues at hand. effective they are!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

n't.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

their educational and active participation in legal issues, confronting the death wish that federal, state and local governments employ upon our natural surroundings

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

absolutely kindled into reality of natural threats and how to positively overcome them, realistically.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

help defend wildlife and mother earth from certain obliteration.

Ways to make it better...

couldn't have been better, if there was no one to fight, then would have been better!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

$

One thing I'd also say is that...

they're the best, most effective organization in this world of evil and resource greed, effectively advocating for nature, a losing battle indeed, so CBD is obviously needed to slow this destruction down, now!

Effective in court, unmatched real time/life dedication to species. CBD always keeps the public informed with real actions to participate in that bring results, not just talk to save species, but real action, they're worth top recognition for their real efforts, not just talk, but effective action in our political/legal world.
CBD is stellar in informing the concerned public on pressing wildlife issues, so the planet doesn't end so fast!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

knowing they have protected many countless species from perishing. Legally stopping the endless destruction of this precious planet by lawmakers.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Leave them alone and support them endlessly!

The Center for Biological Diversity has a great email newsletter and I get about 50 of such a week and the fact that I read this one is significant. It is organized clearly and teaches me a lot. They also help me take action regarding concerns that are important to me. Every time I have interacted with the staff they have been really polite and helpful. My friends kids donated money to them for their family holiday giving (choice of one animal organization and The Center won as they affected the most varied species of animals)and the kids received a hand signed note of thanks from the whole office and they were thrilled and proud. It was a great first experience with charity. I was so glad that The Center took the time to do this.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

a meeting on the East coast office opening, the newsletter information, the endangered species ringer downloads, the take action opportunities, and most important to me their continued and varied actions on many fronts to save endangered species.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

nothing to add

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the newsletter (email) the ringer downloads responsiveness to questions I have asked them

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

extremely knowledgeable and polite

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do even more of its amazing work protecting endangered species. I am engaged with over 100 animal welfare organizations and I truly respect and trust the importance of the Center's work for species protection more than any other in the U.S.

Ways to make it better...

nothing to add

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Big business greed and the general public's ignorance about the value and danger to American wildlife and the importance of species diversity.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I really love the work of The Center for Biological Diversity and try to give them as much as I can. They are doing as much as they can for causes of species protection. They need all they help they can get to give all the help that they can.

I went out on a friday night at a local nightclub and it was fun to give some population facts to others while handing out the condoms. Most people don't even consider the idea of population control to help the environment even though that is one of the best ways to do it.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

It was a fun thing to do on a friday night. The staff was very flexible and didn't have restrictions for when and where I should hand out the Endangered Species Condoms.

As a person with a lifelong concern for earth's ever-diminishing inventory of plant and animal species -- and the natural ecosystems where they live -- which now constitutes an extinction crisis, I have come to know that the Center for Biological Diversity is remarkably effective at rescuing U.S. endangered species from extinction. Many decades ago the U.S. Congress passed the Endangered Species Act, and most of the Center's work is simply making U.S. government administrations act to protect endangered species in accordance with the provisions of this act -- which they frequently have not and still do not always.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

visiting biological preserves that were created in response to successful lawsuits against government agencies by the Center.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

prevent even more of our precious natural biological heritage here in the U.S. from becoming extinct.

I admire their tirelessness in pursuing meaningful protection for our wild lands and animal and plant life. I also think they have been especially effective in gaining protection, winning important court battles and educating the public about new and important issues in conservation and wildlife protection.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the empowerment and voice they offer to the public.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that they give me an easy way to speak with lawmakers and other authorities and executives. They also bring news stories I had not heard of to my attention and do a lot of the tedious but important work for the good of all of us.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

kind, thoughtful and optimistic.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

effectively improve things for many of the important issues facing the environment today, from mountaintop removal coal mining to excessive offshore oil drilling. I see that they are quite effective even when it comes to tough issues.

CBD is very knowledgeable on a wide range of issues. I appreciate the fact that they make it easy for me to send letters to politicians and organizations on issues that are important to me.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

They keep me informed on issues important to me in their newsletters, AND allow me to easily take action on those issues.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Stop coal mining, and other filthy industry.

This group reminds our whole society what responsibility and activism really mean. The individuals at CBD prioritize the welfare of all living beings above their own careers and salaries. Lots of other "environmental" groups have far larger memberships (and far larger budgets) and achieve far, far less toward defending the rights and livelihoods of all living beings. CBD use the tools put in place by our own society to look after the welfare of our living planet. This is far more to all of our benefits than pushing forward economic earnings at the expense of our natural world. Please let your political representatives know that you also support the CBD in their ethical and heroic work!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I'm a year-round Alaskan resident. While many Americans are content with the myth that the North is an untouched paradise, the CBD are some of the only folks stepping up to the plate to actually safeguard some of the last healthy ecosystems left.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make them an official department of the federal government, with final veto power over the Departments of Agriculture and Interior.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

1)Their regular email updates, and opportunities to contribute letters (with all contact info already taken care of). 2)Even though they're poor, they rarely ask for cash 'cause they know informing you and helping you be active are worth more!!!

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

committed, tireless, and never forgetting the primacy of the larger priorities.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Maybe burn it to show America that money does not equate power, and an informed, involved and active citizenry is worth far more.

Ways to make it better...

they lived in my town.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

They acheive most of their effects by utilizing legal mechanisms that could hypothetically be removed by legislators. Also, in some cases, the critical legal tools needed for proper oversight actually don't exist, or don't apply (e.g., some state lands)

One thing I'd also say is that...

If they ever need to recharge on the beauty and grandeur of nature, i'll take any of them for free on my sailboat to watch group-feeding humpback whales, coastal grizzlies, wolves, etc., here in Alaska.

I really like the Center for Biological Diversity because they are so committed to the environment. They are very effective, despite being a fairly small organization. They also stick to their beliefs, even if it's not a popular or exciting topic. From protecting tiny plants in the desert to tackling a huge controversial issue like human overpopulation, they are consistent and passionate. I know that when I dontate to their organization, my money will be used effectively and for something I care deeply about.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing their success in many lawsuits they have filed against polluters, etc.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

make them bigger, so they could be even more effective.
