Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals, Biological & Life Sciences, Environment, Forest Conservation, Land Resources Conservation, Protection of Endangered Species

Mission: At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature;to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

Results: According to the LA Weekly, we're "pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the most effective conservation organization in the country."

Programs: Climate Law Institute, Endangered Species, Oceans, Public Lands, Urban Wildlands

The Center for Biological Diversity is making a valiant attempt to forestall the total destruction of our planet. It keeps me up to date on the latest atrocities and provides an easy way for me to make some small contribution to a future which I hope will include more than humans, c*ckroaches and rats.

I totally agree with the gentlemen below that we humans are the problem! I feel that we should kill ourselves! You people go ahead and get started and if it has a positive effect on the environment the rest of us will follow! WE PROMISE!

The centre should not 'need' to exist as governments around the world should be preserving biodiversity for future generations. As they do not the centre fulfills a vital role in righting wrongs. If someone doesn't do it this planet will be very 'empty', along with the people living on it. I do not want to have to explain to my child in the future why there are no tigers (or whatever else) left anymore.

I believe that the biggest threat to wildlife is the out of control human population. It is hard to take other groups seriously that will not accept this. I thank the Center for standing up instead of denying this

Your newsletter is an essential part of my constant effort to stay informed so I can be as active as possible & an informed voter . We must save what's left of this beautiful planet which was given to us to be stewards of, not to destroy. I can't say enough for the readability of your newsletter, hitting all the key issues, and the essential service of bringing poluters to court. You are my heros, and give me hope for the future of our environment, that it will be livable enough so all creatures can thrive. We can't live here alone on baren rock with poluted water & air. The bio-diversity of the plants & animals which enabled humans to evolve are essential to our continued quallity of life. Unfortunately, many very powerful humans, who's main value is profit, have blinders on & must be stopped and re-educated. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do. It gives me hope & motivates me to do all I can to help.

The Centre for Biological Diversity is a key organisation in the fight for nature's rights. It has the capacity to cause real change in the world using the legal system. It therefore hits perpetrators of unlawful environmental practices where it hurts most - financially. Over the years it has had countless victories that simply would not have been achieved by other methods.

The Center for Biological Diversity does an amazing job, considering the enormous odds they are up against. The world is a different place than it was 50 years ago and the Center is picking up the slack where the government has dropped the ball, and is actually doing something to save this planet and its inhabitants. To their credit they have also started to focus on the human overpopulation problem, which is at the root of all the problems the planet is facing. I read this quote by a professor at UC Santa Barbara, which pretty much says it all. "Human population is exploding - our species now uses more than 50 percent of all available space, food and water on the planet. Because of human domination, conservation efforts for most species have been too little, too late. We are in the middle of one of the great mass extinctions in the history of life." The Center for Biological Diversity is one of my favorite environmental groups. They get the facts, file suit, and get results. I'd say that right now they are tied for first place among the many, many environmental groups I support which include old standbys like Sierra Club, National Wildlife Federation, Audubon and other larger more famous groups.

The center does a great job keeping current on pressing environmental issues and informing the public so we can take action. I've been very impressed with the diversity of topics they cover and their easy to use website. Thanks for the outstanding job!

I read every newsletter and the e-mails in between the weekly newsletter. I trust the Center for Biological Diversity to give me current and accurate information on many environmental issues . It especially keeps me up to date on what is happening outside my area. I sign the petitions and donate when I can.
