Issues: Animals, Environment

Location: PO Box 710 Tucson AZ 85702 USA

Mission: At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature;to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law, and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters, and climate that species need to survive. We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.
Results: According to the LA Weekly, we're "pound for pound, dollar for dollar, the most effective conservation organization in the country."
Programs: Climate Law Institute, Endangered Species, Oceans, Public Lands, Urban Wildlands

Without a doubt, one of the most forward-thinking leaders on the environmental front. This gifted, hard-working, focused group of individuals have the expertise and diligence to really make a difference. I would hate to think of the future of this earth and all living beings on it without them.

The Center for Biological Diversity restores my faith in environmental nonprofits. It consistently takes strong, principled action on important issues/ At a time when many other organizations are busy watering down efforts and brokering deals with corporations, the Center's bold, ethical behavior is refreshing. When I consider making a donation to a nonprofit, they top my list.

One word: effective. While many other environmental organizations work to shift public opinion on environmental issues - a worthy but sometimes quixotic goal - CBD does it differently. They sue, and with amazing success, to save the planet one species (and sometimes ecosystem) at a time. A great thorn in the side of amoral business interests and immoral politicians when it comes to overexploitation of our few remaining resources. Thank Gaia for the Center for Biological Diversity. Hands down the best bang for your environmental buck.

I support the Center because they have an evident commitment to combatting enemies of the environment at the highest and most effective levels. They bring shady, corrupted initiatives into the light so that the general public can become involved and assist in stopping those that care more for money and power than preserving the fragile balance of the natural world. Their selflessness should be applauded by all.

The Center for Biological Diversity allows me to participate in efforts to positively impact the environment. They work hard to protect wildlife, plants, marine life, land - in general, the whole ecosystem. They have learned efficient and productive ways to make our voices heard. Their regular feedback on the progress of various issues is greatly appreciated and often gives cause for hope. They empower people to actually DO something about their concerns instead of just saying "Isn't that awful".

Because of the Center for Biological Diversity's consistently great work on behalf of imperiled species and their habitat, my husband and I have chosen to include the organization in our trust--a portion of whatever we have when we leave this Earth will go to help the incredible people in this organization continue to professionally and effectively represent the species we care so much about. When I have presented the Center with questions, I have always received prompt and solid responses, and I am grateful that they never give up on the tough issues, regardless of obstacles and setbacks. I think the Center is one of the best environmental groups out there, if not THE best.

This group gets a huge amount of work done on a very tiny budget compared to other national groups. The people I've interacted with who work there are very passionate and pretty much work all the time for not very much money. I was especially impressed when they helped stop endangered sea turtles from being burned alive during clean-up during the BP oil spill. And they're still focused on the spill's effects and making sure offshore drilling doesn't cause such a horrible spill later on. Like in the Arctic.

The Center for Biological Diversity has always been one of the most influential groups out there, actually affecting change in government policies. And they're really successful at stopping bad projects from hurting animals and plants that might otherwise go extinct. The Center helps save ALL species, not just endangered gray wolves and polar bears but also beetles and thistles. All species are necessary to save if we want to stop our planet's ecosystems from unraveling. And us people depend on those ecosystems for our own survival.

I would try to help it grow even more without letting it compromise its current ideals. Amazingly, it's already grown a lot and hasn't compromised at all from what I can see.
