I am 73, a farm kid whose first prize ever, $10, was for a conservation scrapbook. My dad, with a seventh-grade education, won an award for his conservation practices. Those efforts (in the days of heavy nitrogen fertlizer) seem virtually in vain, but thanks to the Center, I feel that we have someone still leading the way and battling hard.

The only major environmental organization that gets it (albeit only partially) on the contribution of overpopulation to ecological damage. A couple of years ago, the CBD took the place in my small-time personal donation scheme of another purportedly environmental nonprofit that became a flaccid, compromising, sold-out grant grubber in order to pay for a bigger staff and office.

Center for Biological Diversity is one of my two favorite wildlife non-profits. CBD's dynamite director and staff appear to be more concerned with protecting animals than with playing politics or securing big salaries. CBD's e-newsletters always tell me, succinctly, each project that they're working on now, and why what they're doing is so important. They also update me on successes, without going over the top in praising themselves. I love that they stand up to Big Oil and any industry or company that threatens the habitat and lives of free-roaming creatures. Most impressive is the fact that when I, as a vegan, wrote to Kieran telling him that his organization could not longer ignore the devasating effect that animal agriculture is having on wildlife and recommending the new book "Comfortably Unaware" by Dr. Richard Oppenlander, Kieran replied immediately, telling me that CBD is rolling out later this summer a program that addresses the environmental problems inherent in using animals as food.

While other environmental organizations one by one resort to the "free gift" default in soliciting contributions, disregarding the material and national origin of these products, The Center for Biological Diversity just goes and does its job fighting on behalf of the lifeforms and life communities that are devastated by human short-sightedness, hubris and greed. We don't want Tote Bags or Umbrellas from China, we want Results in Court. Thank you, CBD.

I have given money to NWF, WWF, the Nature Conservancy, and other organizations for many years. But since I discovered the Center for Biological Diversity through an email forward from a friend, I have changed how I allocate my charity dollars, and I have attacked two of the above organizations for policies which are not in the spirit of environmental responsibility. Why? The Center directs its funds toward real action, not giving away calendars or cheap plastic trinkets ("free" "gifts") made in China. Not all environmental charities are guilty of this, but the Center also keeps un members informed of what they're doing more frequently than the other groups, and they do it all digitally so not even recycled paper is wasted on mailed begging missives. In this Second Great Depression I can't risk having my money thrown away on mass mailings which could easily have been emailed-- and I removed myself from the email lists of NWF and WWF because I couldn't stand their constant bombardment of "free" "gift" "offers", and when I wrote to complain about it, all I got was more offers, whereas an email from the Center is a report of what they did this week to make a difference.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

successful lawsuits that forced government environmental regulatory bodies to do their job the way they were supposed to do it in the first place.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to find a cost-effective way to increase exposure among members of other environmental organizations, not with the goal of taking them down, but of forcing them to improve the way they operate, because there are many fronts on which the battle for the environment must be fought, and the Center can't to it all. No one can.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

no waste, just results.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

(no applicable)

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

start or expand an educational wing so that the industry leaders of tomorrow will have been environmentalists since childhood, and the work the Center is doing now will be ingrained in the behaviors of those controlling the offending industries themselves, and more money could be given to things like the Arts and other institutions that define what makes us human.

Ways to make it better...

I had the time to be a volunteer.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

the strength of the lobbies of the industries that still seem not to care whether the planet is healthy or not; the apathy of the general public; the current glut of competing environmental charities.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I wish Joe Sixpack/ the Plumber could be made to care about his own backyard, past how high his grass is.

You open your eyes and your heart reading what they write and help our world with respect to every living animal. The same respect. Not like hey, I like eagles but not snakes. They love em all and help em all in the same way - absolute dedication to the science of maintaining our biological diversity beyond a hickup in time. If we wish to survive the harsh winds of time, we must attempt to help every single animal species and variety alive ad infinitum. The Center for Biological Diversity uses it's funds wisely and mainly to save species. They provide down to earth fundamental proof as well so it's not just opinions. It's science and then the politics of trying to enlighten our humanity of the rest of the live on earth. They do a great job and I'm so proud they're doing what we were born to do - save the earth.

The Center for Biological Diversity is on the right track. Sound scientific information is the best way humans have of understanding reality. The health of our entire planet and all its inhabitants MUST be our top priority - it benefits everyone. Profits are great, but not at the expense of animals, humans and the environment.

I'm a volunteer for the Great Basin Water Network. The Center for Biodiversity is a leader several times over for being a strong ally, a snynergistic catalyst, in helping protect species in the Great Basin that are fully threantened by the huge Southern Nevada Water Authority water withdrawals in eastern Nevada and western Utah. Their staff person in Nevada is thoughtful and just plain helpful on strategies, knowledge, doing the work and acting as a sounding board. I'm awed by CBD's ability to react rapidly to threats. We can all learn from them.

Center for Biological Diversity fights to protect broad areas for endabgered animals and wild plants. They yake a tough stance when necessary and provide invaluable education to the public.

I am most familiar with the crucial and essential help the Center for Biological Diversity has given in Nevada toward preventing a devastating aquifer drainage that would/will destroy about 1/4 of the state's lifeforms, both animal and vegetable, if implemented. The Center's information is always to the point and timely. As a several-year worker against the same project, I know I'd have been much less effective without the Center's guidance, research, and information stream. As one of those with more time than money, I am very grateful to those of you who can contribute, and highly recommend the Center for Biological Diversity to donors of money, time, and expertise. It's impossible to put a dollar value on the kind of detailed factual material I've gotten from them and used to "spread the word."

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I read their dispatches and incorporated the information into my writing and speaking against the project. I have been involved enough to make several trips to Nevada to testify and speak against the diversion project. Instead of sounding like an amateur tree hugging hippie grannie, I was able to use their information to sound like I knew what I was talking about, always a good thing.

The Center for Biological Diversity does an excellent job of keeping environmental issues in the forefront. They are good at educating me about issues concerning endangered species and their habitats and help me to be a better environmental steward. I look to them to provide solid factual information. Thanks, CBD, for your energetic defense of all species, not just the two-legged variety.
