My husband and I have been supported of C.A.R.E. for more than eight years. We contribute financially on a monthly basis. We visit the premises often and are blown away with the care that the animals receive. The facility is spotless and the staff is incredible. I have placed seven cats there and visit frequently. We just love them.

The Great!

I enjoy receiving their regular newsletter and seeing how much they are able to accomplish even though I know they are on a very tight budget and sometimes are on the edge of not being able to make ends meet. But that doesn't stop them one bit. I have had the opportunity to visit their sanctuary. It is quite a marvel. It is in high dessert and diligent care has been taken for the comfort and well being of all the critters that find themselves to be taken under the loving protection of CARE. I have volunteered at other organizations so I feel I can speak from experience that the CARE Sanctuary and involved Team are excellent. I would not hesitate for a moment if I found myself in need of their help with one of my animals. Keep up the good work!

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Straight forward and honest. Real unpretentious people doing the very best that they can.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

They are very concerned about each and every animal in their care and beyond their actual Sanctuary. I have observed that all of the staff are very kind, patient, warm and loving to all animals.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It would even be better because they wouldn't have to spend so much time working to get donations. That peace of mind of their continued existence would really free them up and enable them to do the real task they want to do. Helping animals.

C.A.R.E. (Cat/Canine Assistance, Referral & Education) was founded in 1992. CARE members of the board, volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly ever since to rescue at-risk dogs and cats without regard to their health status, behavior or adoptability, providing them needed medical care and spay/neuter services. Then they seek responsible adoptive homes for them. Thiers commitment to theirs rescues is for life, whatever it takes. Through the years theirs direct rescue operations have saved and improved the lives of thousands of animals. I am so glad they have open this wonderful place to protect the ones without a voice. I am a donor and a volunteer and I am so honor to be able to be part of this organization. In 1998 they opened theirs cage-free, no-kill animal sanctuary for about 200 plus cats and dogs in an economically depressed community. They care for both adoptable and "unadoptable" animals, including animals with chronic yet manageable diseases such as Feline Leukemia, Feline AIDS, canine separation anxiety, the disabled, the aged, the feral etc. The CARE sanctuary is very humble, but a very happy, friendly and clean place thanks to the employees, volunteers, and wonderful supporters. These go together to make the CARE sanctuary unique place with an inviting atmosphere. The CARE visitors always are very impressed by how clean and how happy the rescued pets are. They keep very detailed medical records on the residents, including the picture of every dog and cat so they can be easily indentified (especially when they are dealing with feral cats).

The Great!

I visited CARE one weekend and was impressed with quite a few aspects of the organization. Two major ones left an indelible impression. That animals were, firstly, treated with great attention, whether in good or bad health. I even overheard workers discussing recent medical reports for specific animals, in casual conversation (not a report session). Secondly, the campus was very clean. I noticed that one of the workers was continuously checking the area and cleaning. It was an immaculate shelter and the overall atmosphere was one of compassion and hard work. Immediately after my visit, I shared with friends and family of my visit and inquired about possible donations.

C.A.R.E. has done a fantastic job over the years..growing from a garage shelter in one of the volunteers' backyard into an actual shelter for so many homeless animals. I wish with all my heart that the day will come when this and all shelters will close because there are no longer any abused and homeless ones to care for, but until that time I thank God that a caring place such as C.A.R.E. exists.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

In person since 1992. It's been a real struggle and the last 2 years with the dismal economy have been really rough. But somehow C.A.R.E. keeps on keepin' on, its fur-folk thrive and the Sanctuary is better than ever.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I am one of the Board members. Would love to be paid so that I could quit my day job and devote all my time to helping C.A.R.E. grow, save more animals from suffering and help educate pet care-givers towards more loving, lasting relationships.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

1) The satisfaction of seeing many animals whose chances at life were slim or less come back and thrive; Stubbs the Cat aka: Bravo being a prime example.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Human beings who walk the walk as well as talk the talk. People who revere and respect all life.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Purchase the property the Sanctuary is located on, vastly improve it, give our Sanctuary staff the benefits they deserve, save many, many more animals lives and emulate our friends and mentors, Best Friends Sanctuary of Utah.

Ways to make it better...

C.A.R.E. had $10million dollars and was located in very close to the San Fernando Valley.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Money. Purchase of the Sanctuary property. The spirit is there and willing, but we aren't getting any younger. Dedicated volunteers are needed to help with all aspects of the organization.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Visitors to the Sanctuary are welcome by appointment. Volunteers are very, very welcome but for many prospective volunteers the one-way 1+ hour drive from Los Angeles is discouraging.

I started donating when news about Stubbs was ablaze on the Internet. I'm not a big donor. I started out giving $50 per year. Now I'm up to $150. I appreciate that CARE sends nice thank you letters for gifts, and I appreciate the informative newsletter. Showing gratitude is part of marketing, and you do a good job. Not all rescue organizations are up to your standards. Thank you for helping the wonderful dogs and cats.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I feel good giving to this organization because it receives highest marks in certification.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

I enjoy that my donations are acknowledged and appreciated. I've cut way back or dropped other organizations that show little or no gratitude.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

It could expand, and the staff could relax more often. I'm sure fundraising is stressful and time consuming.

Since I live in San Diego going out to volunteer is not an option at this time. However, having watched their website for, what, 4 years, I can see that they have done a wonderful job with very little money and very little volunteer base. So, my experience is extremely limited. Having Sherry from Best Friends come out, to my mind at least, gave them a definite stamp of approval, since I also donate to them.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Do wonderful things up there in the desert, just as Northeast Animal League has done in the east and Best Friends in the west. Expand and take in even more at risk animals.
