Rating: 5 stars   28 reviews

Issues: Animals, Human Services

Location: 1040 NE 45th Street Oakland Park FL 33334 USA

Mission: To provide a network of qualified, dependable, caring Therapy Teams committed to delivering a therapeutic benefit through the use of dogs to both children and adults who need comfort, companionship, or the unconditional love that only a dog can provide. To provide support, training, education and mentoring to those interested in dog therapy programs. To build connections between volunteers, facilities and individuals seeking dog therapy.
Results: Dramatic improvement has been seen in all of the populations that we serve. Children have significantly improved their reading skills; disabled have reached farther, walked extra steps; the elderly have had their spirits lifted and been able to reminisce about their pasts. Our volunteers have consistently expressed that they "don't know who gets more out of the pet therapy...those that they serve or themselves."
Target demographics: Our target population is involved ongoing with our mission of reaching as many nursing homes, schools, group homes, etc. as possible.
Programs: C.A.T. pet therapy volunteer corps provide both animal-assisted activities (AAA) and animal-assisted therapy (AAT). AAA is defined as pet-centered visitation programs to enhance the life quality or support educational programs in a variety of environments such as hospitals, special needs day care, retirement homes or reading intervention programs. AAT is goal-oriented treatment utilizing specially trained pet/handler teams to achieve specific physical, social, cognitive, or emotional goals with patients. AAT facilitates healing and improves self-esteem, lifts morale and reduces stress of patients and staff alike. C.A.T. AAA/AAT volunteers work within facilities to provide physical therapy, recreational therapy, occupational therapy, and healthcare-related support services through the use of our highly trained and tested volunteer dogs and their human partners. Our Pack Reader Program helps children build reading skills under the attentive ear of a canine companion. We volunteer within public and charter schools as well established educational tutoring systems to support the efforts of children currently reading below their grade level, who have low self-esteem or who may be learning English as a second language.

Community Reviews

Rating: 5 stars

I have had other pet therapy organizations provide services to my clients but I will never use them again. Canine Assisted Therapy is by far superior both professionally and in the quality of therapy dogs they provide. I never have to worry about keeping updated information. They do it for me and we are delighted to be partnering with them!
