Cancer Schmancer Foundation

Issues: Cancer

Location: PO Box 2760 Reston VA 20195 USA

Mission: The Cancer Schmancer Movement is dedicated to saving women's lives through early detection of cancer. We are: • transforming women from patients into informed medical consumers • educating women on the importance and methods of early detection • shifting this nation’s priority from just looking for a cure, to prevention and early detection.
Target demographics: Women
Geographic areas served: National
Programs: EARLY DETECTION FRAN VAN PROGRAM - Cancer Schmancer has discovered that there are many existing cancer-screening services for low-income individuals, the uninsured and underinsured; however, many of them are struggling to reach the people they have committed to serve, particularly women, because they just don’t have the capacity to get the message out. This is where Cancer Schmancer can have the greatest impact. Because of our belief in collaboration to achieve a higher goal, we have built a model to partner with local, existing cancer screening services for women in need in order to reach and build capacity. (These partners are screening equipment transport vans, mobile cancer screening vans, or local clinics/hospitals, depending on the greatest need of each community.) As part of our capacity building, the Early Detection Fran Van program provides training to outreach volunteers who will help educate the communities and help women make and keep their screening appointments. This year, we are in the process of development and piloting this program in three cities, with an ultimate goal of development in cities across the US and eventually abroad. WE THE FUTURE - mobilizes the youth of this country to engage in community education and fundraising initiatives in order to support Cancer Schmancer’s programs and share the life-saving message of early detection and living healthily. www.CancerSchmancer.org/wethefuture

Fran Drescher is a delight! As a 10-year caregiver to my husband who had cancer, I appreciate her direct contributions to this cause in a way that the general public could easily relate to her. Cancer patients and caregivers are regularly faced with heavy decisions and experiences; seeing Fran's smiling face and lighthearted manner even with regard to a serious disease made things better. And better is good.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

helping the general public of all ages, both patient and non-patient, better deal with cancer by connecting with a familiar face and upbeat attitude.

Have you ever met someone who had cancer? Has anyone in your family ever gotten that dreadful phone call or doctor’s visit, where they learn they have CANCER? Cancer is a word that holds a lot of meaning and concern in six short letters. There is a slow and painful realization that washes over you when you hear that you have a disease. All the dread, fear, and pain that you feel when you get the news, is nothing compared to the anguish you will encounter as you fight deaths beckoning call. Most of this can be avoided by STAGE 1 diagnosis (when cancer is most curable)! The Cancer Schmancer Movement believes that "Stage 1 is the cure". The world does not realize that millions of people get misdiagnosed or mistreated and most pay the ultimate price. We are talking about life and death, and about fighting! Fran Drescher, and the rest of the team which is Cancer Schmancer, want to not only help you see the warning signs to prevent cancer but the entire movement becomes a sisterhood of support when the dreaded news comes. With constant updates, stories, and events the Cancer Schmancer Movement is just that - a movement against cancer, a surviver retreat filled with hope and promise. If you can think of one person in this whole world that you don't want to feel the dread of hearing the words "you have cancer" then join the team of Cancer Schmancer and fight against oppression. Help spread the word, "Stage 1 Is the Cure"!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

countless ways across the entire country and spreading wings across the globe. The Cancer Schmancer Movement is constantly striving to reduce the number of people who have to hear the dreadful news of a terminal diagnosis.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the ever flowing stream of joy and hope they send to not only all the members but all of humanity as well. Support is not just their profession, it becomes a way of life for everyone invovled with the Cancer Schmancer Movement.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

helpful, dedicated, and supportive. Every single person involved with the Cancer Schmancer Movement truly believes in the ongoing dedication that is needed to bestow a healthier diagnosis onto our world. We can become our own advocate and own our health.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

further the already present support that is needed to bring ourselves and our communities into what can only be described as a healthier, happier tomorrow. Supporting CS is investing in not only your own health but the health of all those surrounding you.

other nonprofits stealing their thunder

One thing I'd also say is that...

fran, you are awesome!! i come from flushing and idolize you- when i went to college people told me i sound like you and i took it as a compliment!!! now, you are doing great work spreading the word about your experiences through your cause. thank you!

I really like what Fran is doing with this organization. People shouldn't die from cancer because of ignorance. I have referred every woman that I come across to look at the Cancer Schmancer Foundation and so far I haven't heard a bad thing about it. Thanks to all those that support it and Fran for being the leader behind it and the spokesperson. You are great!!!

I was diagnosed and treated for Uterine Cancer last year. I found out about all the hard work that Fran is doing to help women understandand and the medical community to listen. I learned so much from Fran, such as a pap doesn't test for all reproductive cancers. As a reult I have directed so many to her website and learn about her hard work! Much attention is given to breast cancer, and Fran is working hard politically to get more attention to othr female cancers. THANX Fran

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The dedication that Fran has pur forth.

Wasn't feeling like my usual self and normally I would ignore it, but I heard Fran speak a while back about how you have to listen to your body and go to the doctor. And I did... although it wasn't cancer,(thankfully!!) I would not have done it if I didn't hear about this org. Thank you Fran and Cancer Schmancer.
