Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Cancer, Health

Mission: The Cancer Schmancer Movement is dedicated to saving women's lives through early detection of cancer. We are: • transforming women from patients into informed medical consumers • educating women on the importance and methods of early detection • shifting this nation’s priority from just looking for a cure, to prevention and early detection.

Target demographics: Women

Geographic areas served: National

Programs: EARLY DETECTION FRAN VAN PROGRAM - Cancer Schmancer has discovered that there are many existing cancer-screening services for low-income individuals, the uninsured and underinsured; however, many of them are struggling to reach the people they have committed to serve, particularly women, because they just don’t have the capacity to get the message out. This is where Cancer Schmancer can have the greatest impact. Because of our belief in collaboration to achieve a higher goal, we have built a model to partner with local, existing cancer screening services for women in need in order to reach and build capacity. (These partners are screening equipment transport vans, mobile cancer screening vans, or local clinics/hospitals, depending on the greatest need of each community.) As part of our capacity building, the Early Detection Fran Van program provides training to outreach volunteers who will help educate the communities and help women make and keep their screening appointments. This year, we are in the process of development and piloting this program in three cities, with an ultimate goal of development in cities across the US and eventually abroad. WE THE FUTURE - mobilizes the youth of this country to engage in community education and fundraising initiatives in order to support Cancer Schmancer’s programs and share the life-saving message of early detection and living healthily. www.CancerSchmancer.org/wethefuture

I have loved being involved with Cancer Schmancer! Helping out the WE THE FUTURE youth branch of this organization has been very rewarding because it has allowed me to spread the news about the importance of early detection and prevention to young people everywhere. I have enjoyed hearing the inspiring stories of people who have fought cancer or who know someone with cancer as well because there are so many brave people out there giving cancer everything they have got to get rid of it for good! Who doesn't want that?

I'm a 20 year old girl from Puerto Rico. I started to be part in this movement when I was 17 years old. I must say, that I found the Cancer Schmancer Movement by accident, via Internet. I had the book and one day I began to search for a way to contact the author: Fran Drescher, but instead of finding what I wanted, I found the movement. This movement has changed my life in many ways. Even though I can't donate money to it, I have been supporting it and helping them to have more awareness.
I have many family members who had died of cancer, but recently in family, we are going through a hard situation. My aunt of 35 years old, has colon cancer, with a whole bunch of complications that makes things worse. The Treatments seems to not be working at all. Only a miracle and the power of God can do something. We are truly happy cause she still is alive by God's will and mercy.
Being part of this movement, has help me to realize the importance of having good health and helping others to achieve it. I'm also part of the sub-program they have for youth, called WE THE FUTURE! I have been helping them in many ways. Also did a volunteer work for them in the past months, in the advertisement area. Creating a "logo" for this program and being used by the staff. I love this program cause it gives me a chance to put my talents into challenge, for the better improvement of women's/ everyone/ lives.
It's truly an amazing organization. It has been helping millions of lives and it has been doing a great work worldwide. I been making it known here in Puerto Rico for the past years. For the past years, I been doing presentations, advertisement videos, telling testimonies and more, here at my college campus and when I used to be in High School. For me, it means a lot. I hope it continues to be an excellent source of help and prevention. I fully recommended. Besides being part of it, it has been my other family, even though I don't know them so much. Why? Easy, they watch out for my well being by educating me and others, how to have healthier lives. May God bless them and give the Cancer Schmancer Movement, more years to make changes in our lifestyles.

Ever since I was a child I have seen many family members loose the battle with cancer. I never really understood why there couldn't be anything done about it until I grew up and dug my heels into research and websites. When I was 18 I had received a phone call from my OB saying my PAP had come back with some abnormalities and I needed to schedule an appointment. Come to find out I was diagnosed with HPV at the time and needed to undergo Cryotherapy to freeze the abnormal cells off. Then I did not understand why I had to go through that procedure until it was explained to me that if I had gone without the treatment the abnormal cells could in fact develope into cervical cancer. Now 26 years old and free of abnormal cells due to the simple test of a PAP. Keep yourself protected by routine check ups with the OB and always remember ONLY you know your body, if there is something that doesn't seem right let your instincts guide you.

Cancer Schmancer's work is exceptional and unique. In addition to promoting health awareness, Cancer Schmancer is helping to provide underserved women with cancer screening tests. I volunteered for the Fran Van Early Detection program in New York and was impressed by its efficient provision of essential health services. There is an obvious need for affordable screening because many women walked by that day and stopped to arrange an appointment. Cancer Schmancer is saving lives by inspiring women to make healthy choices.

cancer schmancer is an amazing foundation. reading about cancer and about stage one being the cure and taught me much, and it is a life changing foundation. Fran Drescher has done a lot with this. she goes on walks for women with stage one of cancer, and really puts her all into it. I think that this foundation really deserves some recognition, because it is a WONDERFUL nonprofit organization.

I haven't been able to help with cancer yet because I am too young. But I did start reading the book. I wanted to read it to try and better understand the situation, and beacause Fran Drescher is one of my biggest role models. Though I am not finished with the book yet, I can say that it is one of the most captivating and well written books I have ever read! Miranda
