Cancer Schmancer does a lot of great work to build community and encourage early detection through education and teaching people (especially women) to be proactive and advocate for their bodies and themselves.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

taking a more active role in my health and asking questions of my doctors, being my own advocate.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

give them more money.

In June of 2010, I was packing the contents of my aunt Sue's apartment when she learned she would be in Long Term Care at the Hebrew Home. After lifting heavy boxes, I saw blood. I had not seen blood in 10 years since having a D&C and never having a period again.

I am 63 years
old.

I called my GYN and told her I saw a small amount of blood after lifting heavy boxes. she told me to come to her office where she examined me

and took a biopsy of a polyp she saw. The polyp was benign. My GYN sent me for a Pelvic sonagram and I was told I needed a D &C, which I had on June 25, 2010.

My GYN called me and gave me the name of a surgeon. My GYN said I have stage 3-4 of uterine cancer and I need to talk to a surgeon

she recomended. I had no one to go with me and the surgeon had no bedside manner. she told me she was going on vacation the following week and I needed to get her a copy of my Pelvic Sonagram CD .

I was confused what to do but went for the CD copy of my pelvic sonagram.

A friend had given me the name of the best Oncologist/Gynocologist and said you need to see him for a second opinion and take the CD to him. This time i brought a friend to listen and ask questions. hthe surgeon is Dr. albert j. Steren.

I told him my story and that i was told I have stage 3-4 of Uterine cancer and it would be a "bikini cut".

Dr. Steren told me he will not know the stage until after the surgery.

He was able to do a complete hysterectomy removing everything including the cervix lapiscopically. He took samples of the lymph nodes and surrounding organs.

in 2 weeks I learned it was not stage 3-4 but stage 1A and that i would not need chemotherapy or radiation.

I feel blessed to have found Dr. Steren and he will see me this week for my 6 month check up.

After my surgery, I was told by a friend that Fran Drescher also had stage One of uterine cancer and I found her website and am reading her book and learning I am not alone.

My parents are no longer alive an Aunt and cousins could care less.

My brother and sister in law did take me to the hospital and went with me to hear the results. My aunt sue died August 14, 2010.

Now i feel i have a mission to educate others and get involved with "Cancer Smancer".

I just retired from teaching art for 40 years and I have returned to subbing.

I would like to help design T shirts, bumper stickers, necklaces to help make money for Cancer Schmancer.

I just learned about Cancer Schmancer and would like to get involved. i live in Bethesda, Maryland, 45 minutes from washington D.C. We have a beautiful facility in Bethesda called strathmore Hall for entertainers. this would be the perfecrt place for Fran to come and speak and charge admission and sell t shirts, bumper stickers so others with uterine cancer can have a chance to know we are not alone.

As an artist, I feel there should be more visual apparel we can buy to spread the word...T shirts, necklaces, bracelets, binders, bumper stickers, hats, scarves with "Cancer Smancer" Fran, a concert with your friends in the entertainment world, maybe Neil diamond, Michael Feinstein, Mandy Patinkin, to help raise money for Cancer Schmancer.

Cancer Schmancer is such an important movement to make us all aware of the power we have over our own destiny. It enables us to use the power of our own voices in confronting cancer. Each of us knows of someone who has the dreaded "C" disease. My mother, for example, at almost 84 years of age is a 27-year breast cancer survivor because she detected it early.
Having cancer can be considered "taboo" thus making it an easy silent killer because those having the disease might be afraid to know that they have it; and if they know they have it, they are afraid to let anyone know.
Cancer Schmancer and Fran, as an advocate who has used her star-power to make us unafraid since it can literally happen to anyone, encourages early detection that should save lives. Our medical system is so oriented toward disease treatment. Currently, thank goodness, we are trying to place more emphasis on prevention so that treatment and early death are less prevalent. Cancer Schmancer is the premier movement in that process of societal reorientation.

I have seen the movement grow gradually but with purpose as more and more people become aware of it. Just reading the responses of people who have benefited is inspiring.

Get the word out more. Differentiate between Cancer Schmancer and Susan G. Komen maybe even partnering to some degree with them since the two groups tackle two complementary messages and efforts. Expand the new thrusts and efforts.

i lost my whole family to cancer, then was told i had it too.
i went into shock, not only is my family gone, but would i die too? Alone?
No kids, they told me i needed a hysterectomy immediately.
i tried so hard to fight, but the cancer was beating me, so i had to make the choice to
have the surgery,no family for me, but i did get to live, I did get to help spread the word about early detection and a wonderful organization such as "Cancer Schmancer"
I even had a party when i got better , we raised almost 500 for the cause, i even wrote Cancer schmancer" on my cake :)
I could have died, many people have, the ONLY reason i am still alive today is due to early detection

I have loved being involved with Cancer Schmancer! Helping out the WE THE FUTURE youth branch of this organization has been very rewarding because it has allowed me to spread the news about the importance of early detection and prevention to young people everywhere. I have enjoyed hearing the inspiring stories of people who have fought cancer or who know someone with cancer as well because there are so many brave people out there giving cancer everything they have got to get rid of it for good! Who doesn't want that?

I have been overwhelmed by the heartfelt sense of community I've come to enjoy from getting to know the Cancer Schmancer website and the many people who run it. When I get on there and read the other survivor stories, I feel like I haven't lost my mom, but I've somehow gained hundreds of friends who help me turn around my loss into something important and meaningful. Thank you, CS.

If I didn't happen to stumble across Cancer Schmancer, I'm not sure what I would have done! I've never been the type to go to the doctor or take care of myself, but hearing Fran's story, I was able to go to the doc and get my symptoms checked out. Luckily it wasn't cancer or anything, but I was so happy to be this "new person" who did what they were suppose to in terms of their health.

I'm a 20 year old girl from Puerto Rico. I started to be part in this movement when I was 17 years old. I must say, that I found the Cancer Schmancer Movement by accident, via Internet. I had the book and one day I began to search for a way to contact the author: Fran Drescher, but instead of finding what I wanted, I found the movement. This movement has changed my life in many ways. Even though I can't donate money to it, I have been supporting it and helping them to have more awareness.
I have many family members who had died of cancer, but recently in family, we are going through a hard situation. My aunt of 35 years old, has colon cancer, with a whole bunch of complications that makes things worse. The Treatments seems to not be working at all. Only a miracle and the power of God can do something. We are truly happy cause she still is alive by God's will and mercy.
Being part of this movement, has help me to realize the importance of having good health and helping others to achieve it. I'm also part of the sub-program they have for youth, called WE THE FUTURE! I have been helping them in many ways. Also did a volunteer work for them in the past months, in the advertisement area. Creating a "logo" for this program and being used by the staff. I love this program cause it gives me a chance to put my talents into challenge, for the better improvement of women's/ everyone/ lives.
It's truly an amazing organization. It has been helping millions of lives and it has been doing a great work worldwide. I been making it known here in Puerto Rico for the past years. For the past years, I been doing presentations, advertisement videos, telling testimonies and more, here at my college campus and when I used to be in High School. For me, it means a lot. I hope it continues to be an excellent source of help and prevention. I fully recommended. Besides being part of it, it has been my other family, even though I don't know them so much. Why? Easy, they watch out for my well being by educating me and others, how to have healthier lives. May God bless them and give the Cancer Schmancer Movement, more years to make changes in our lifestyles.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would consider to take it to other places, specially Puerto Rico. I would like to see this organization working on college campus here in Puerto Rico cause usually our youth doesn't care about the damage some things are making to our lives; not only our youth but everyone in general. I think it would be a good idea, to come and gives us speeches, meetings or more encouragement to those who are helping the movement in different ways, in person.
