Byte Back’s mission is to improve economic opportunity for low-income residents of the Washington DC area by providing computer training and employment readiness skills.
Over the past four years, Byte Back dramatically increased its income, the number of residents served and the number and types of classes offered. We expanded the number of students taught annually from 293 to 1098 (275%) and the number of course slots provided per year from 365 to 1427 (291%). In addition, we became a licensed post-secondary school and added a number of in-dustry-wide recognized IT certification training programs to our array of classes. In 2010 Byte Back won an honorable mention from the Washington Post Awards for Excellence in Non-profit Management. Milestones... In 2011 Byte Back enrolled 45 District Residents in a program (90 course hours and an 80 hour intern-ship) designed for individuals who are interested in starting their own neighborhood computer repair business. Those students wishing to start their own business worked with WACIF to do so. Those who wanted employment as a Computer Support Specialist received placement assistance from Byte Back. Provided free refurbished computers to 552 program graduates and a year of free internet to 349 program graduates, enabling them to continue practicing their new skills and accessing services and information from home. (Thanks to partnerships with First Time Computers, Cricket Commu-nications and the DC Public Library.) In 2010... We were included in the 2010-11 Catalogue for Philanthropy. Began teaching computer classes in Spanish and in American Sign Language in the fall of 2011 in order to assist more DC residents to bridge the digital divide.
