I am also a past board member and current volunteer. Asheville Humane Society owns and operates its Adoption and Education Center located next door to the Buncombe County Animal Shelter, which AHS operates under contract with the county and other municipalities. For the last two years, our county shelter has not had to euthanize a healthy, adoptable animal! What a beautiful thing to be able to say! When I first became involved 7 or 8 years ago, the shelter and AHS were at the sad facility at Lee's Creek, and the numbers of healthy animals they could not save because of overpopulation was in the high hundreds. The current statistics are just incredible, and I am so thrilled to be a part of this stellar organization. From the board, to the senior staff, to the kennel workers, you will find loving, caring professionals doing very difficult and emotional work with the highest regard for all life. We never turn our back on any animal -- we are the safety net when all other organziations have said no, sorry we're full. I will support AHS proudly and always!

Folks need to be aware that although the AHS of Asheville does some wonderful work, they have very loose guidelines/definitions of "healthy" animals. Supervision towards the decision making process for saving versus killing animals is weak at best.
As a result of the above, the kill rate for
AHS of Asheville is 59%. That means if you surrender your animal to the group, it has, in fact, a 6 out of 10 chance of being killed.
When you make your donation decisions, you might want to pick another organization with a lower euthanization rate of preferably a "no-kill" shelter.
Don't give your money away just because it the "Humane Society. "
