Brighter Tomorrows is an excellent nonprofit organization. I have learned so much about domestic violence and sexual assault since working with Brighter Tomorrows. I love being part of such a wonderful staff and I love the feeling I get when we help survivors and their children. I love the success stories when a survivor and her children have left our program to start a Brighter Tomorrow. I am truly blessed to be apart of such a wonderful organization.

I currently live in Grand Prairie and am cleaning out my closet. My first thought was to donate my clothing to a local woman's shelter. I found Brighter Tomorrows on line and tried contacting them regarding donations, but could never find any information on line or when I called. Are they trying to say they don't need donations?

I was appaled by the way Brighter Tomorrows staff is expected to treat sheltar residents. They were treated as less-than and the healthy amount of pride that normal human beings should have was refused them. It felt like they were being further abused by staff.

Additionally, the board
member I contacted about this behavior seemed to have no problem with it. And when I addressed that the women were being controled instead of given structure I was told, by her, that "some of these woman come in so beaten down they they cannot control themselves."

That is not okay. The Mission Statment says the goal is to empower, that is not what is being done.

A lot

Badly

No

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

Treat the clients with respect instead of exerting contol and power over them.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

Yes, it opened my eyes to the reality of non-profits. I had heard stories similar to my experiance about other sheltars but I did not believe them until I experianced them for myself.

How did this volunteer experience make you feel?

Only slightly helpful. I can provide materials but I can not make an organization treat it's clients with respect.
