When I heard my diagnosis, I wanted information on everything what was available in both mainstream and complementary medicine. The Internet was loaded with questionable material. I got to Breast Cancer Options through a book. The founder, Hope Nemiroff, immediately took my call. I liked that I could discuss options that had been carefully researched. A lot of women don't know that this is a strictly local organization, providing services in the Hudson River Valley exclusively--that's an important distinction. There are publications available, organized seminars, a yearly conference--even a camp--Camp Lightheart-- providing respite for patients and a fun-filled vacation for kids affected by the disease. Comprehensive information that's reliable and current here at home makes Breast Cancer Options an excellent starting point on the journey to recovery.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I was assisted when I made a difficult decision to include complementary medicine early on in my treatment. I was given information and support--not advice. I feel that I made the right choice for me. Tests have been good.I'm grateful for BCO's help.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give them a platform and a large amplifier so that everyone across the region could be aware of what they have to offer. If I had the financial means, I'd support their mission with large and continuing donations so they could continue to grow.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

that the information provided is researched and credible. That their focus is on comprehensive breast cancer options combining what is available in both mainstream and complementary medicine.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Compassionate, dedicated, focused. There is room for many perspectives. Everyone is available and approachable as well as knowledgable.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Build an even stronger network of services so that women with breast cancer could find here in the Hudson Valley. It could continue to educate doctors, patients and law makers on the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to breast cancer--

Ways to make it better...

I had learned about this organization even earlier in my fight against breast cancer. It would have helped if my medical doctors had referred me to them for information and support.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

in the funding realm. People don't realize that many large research organizations don't fund local services. That's an important distinction to remember.

One thing I'd also say is that...

there is no other organization like this in the Hudson Valley region and it deserves attention and support.

Breast Cancer Options provides free support groups for women with breast cancer facilitated by knowlegable and caring women. I gave a talk on nutrition at one of the support groups and helped several women understand some serious health problems they had been experiencing since their chemotherapy. They had nowhere else to go to ask the questions and find the answers they needed. These support groups and the free breast cancer forums that Breast Cancer Options provides fill a huge gap in services and in information for women with breast cancer and their families. This free service is empowering hundreds of women in the area to take charge of their health and their recovery.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Offering a level of education about breast cancer and treatment options that is not found anywhere else. and in providing a level of support and empowerment that allows women to be active participants in their treatment decisions.

When I first got diagnosed with breast cancer in mid 2008 I was devastated to learn I needed to lose one of my breasts. To add to that I needed to undergo chemotherapy. I contacted ACS and got nothing but lip service. I heard through a friend that there was an organization that was in Kingston,NY that really wanted to help. I joined one of their support groups (it was the beginning of that particular group). The support, comraderie, knowledge, and friendship saved my life. I have made friends that I will have forever. They have become my "sisters". No matter what, I know that there is a place for me to find out about breast cancer, treatments, and anything else I might need. Thank you Breast Cancer Options, Inc for existing!

I have received much grace from my contact with BCO. Although I am a survivor of another type of cancer, I have attended many of their complementary medecine seminars and have learned so much. There was the doctor from Canada who helped his patients relax during Chemo by playing healing sounds. He demonstrated crystal bowls for us. Dr Carol, a chiropractor and much much more shared with us some of the ways to integrate peaceful meditative states into our day. I have had other contacts with this great and compassionate organization

When I was diagnosed with invasive Breast Cancer, I was scared and sorely uninformed. My doctor gave me alot of good information, but as is my nature, I felt I had to unearth everything there was to know -- and I soon found out that that was ALOT. I spent hours and hours reading and researching and I have to say that the in retrospect, the best resource I found was BCO. Their wonderful people, seminars, and newsletters are just invaluable.

I have finished my treatment but the benefit of this organization is ongoing. I know I am not alone in my concern over when and if I will ever have to fight this fight again. I believe that my chances are so much better thanks to the information I have received from my affiliation with this great group of people. Thank you over and over again BCO.

Our spa refers guests to Breast Cancer Options any time they ask questions related to any cancer matter. With our spa's focus on natural wellness we are frequently asked about self care related to many illnesses. We are extremely careful with our referral and consider Breast Cancer Options one of the most knowledgeable and responsive organizations in the Catskills & Hudson Valley. Our community is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and professional grassroots organization to assist, advise and show compassion to those facing decisions about cancer treatment. Their newsletter is an excellent educational publication for the general public. Breast Cancer Options is first rate! I feel our donations are a great investment. I only wish we could give more! I have found their Annual Complementary Medicine Conferences to be an invaluable resource for cutting edge research. It is through BCO that I found my current naturopathic doctor, who had spoken at a conference of theirs. Since working with him, blood tests reveal that my risk factors have declined dramatically. BCO's newsletters have also been profoundly helpful to me, as I weigh options from month to month.

Breast Cancer Options has literally saved my life. This organization provides services which are sorely lacking in our community. The director of this group, Hope Nemiroff, personally accompanied my to doctor appointments and counseled me in a way that only another breast cancer survivor could. She helped me with research and assisted me in finding a doctor who met my needs as a patient. This wonderful orgajization is certainly deserving of this award. I hope it will help spread the word that these services are available and can give support at a time when it is really needed.

The reason that I an proud to serve on BCO's Advisory Board is that I have known the organization and its work for many years. BCO provides comprehensive services and is very hands on -- they educate, advocate, and most importantly, personally assist anyone with a diagnosis of breast cancer day or night, twenty four seven. I have volunteered at their annual Breast Cancer Options Conference and been very impressed with the caliber of workshops, topics, and speakers they are able to attract. They offer support groups throughout the Hudson Valley and make presentations on any number of valuable topics anytime/anywhere when asked. They do their research and share it through one of the largest educational websites about breast cancer on the web. They also publish an amazing resource book and an annual calendar that are chock full of information. On a personal level, I have referred more newly diagnosed, terrified people than one would wish they would have to in the last twelve years to BCO. To a one they have come back to me with nothing but praise and a much more secure and hopeful outlook. BCO is an organization that has to be experienced to be believed.

I have found the people at Breast Cancer Options to be very knowledgeable and compasionate. I have learned so much about breast cancer from them, both on a professional level and personal level. I have attended their annual conference which is very informative. I am relieved to know that if I am diagnosed with breast cancer I have this organization to turn to. I know they can help me navigate through a complicated system in a very emotional stressful time.
