It is a shame and a sin how this man, Steven Reese, uses the poor children of Appalachia to solicit money from the public. He is nothing more than a smooth-talking charlatan who pays himself a big salary and does little to. Itching for the people he says his "ministry" serves. Do not send your money to these evil people.

Press Release: 10/18/11
Shelter Rock Ministries of Boone, North Carolina, Steven Reese
Established in 2001, Shelter Rock has been ministering to the poor of the Appalachian Mountains for over a decade. Steven Reese of Shelter Rock utilizes a specific distribution tactic that allows
hundreds of impoverished families to be served and ministered to at one time. This tactic is called the Day of Blessing Event. The Day of Blessing Event keeps a festival atmosphere with edifying activities to help the needy change the way they see themselves. Recipients are taught about the Love of Jesus, they are given an opportunity to accept Jesus as their Savior, and then their physical needs are met with a drive-through-style distribution.
After a successful decade of ministry—including over 100,000 families served, over 10,000 decisions for Christ and over 1,000 outreach events—Shelter Rock and Steven Reese continue to expand their efforts to the Native American Reservations of the Northwest. Locations such as Boulder, Colorado and the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming and other reservations surrounded by extreme poverty.
For example, Boulder, CO is a central location to over 100 Native American reservation. The Uprising of ministry on the reservations are directed toward isolated pockets of poverty. On these reservations, average annual incomes are as low as $5,000 per year.
This continued expansion is exponentially growing the outreach efforts of Shelter Rock and its partners.

Catherine Reese was good to me, a great friend, as long as i donated items, volunteered, spread the word about Shelter Rock and gave them money, but when i became very sick and couldn't do anything to benefit her, she wouldn't speak to me, when i called and begged for help. I started helping in 2002 until 2008. I have tried since 2009 to contact her and she is never there and i have been told two people that were always good to me, no longer worked there. What kind of a ministry turns its back on someone who helped them when they needed it and won't help me now that i desperately need it ?

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

A very negative way.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Help people that needed it, make sure the Reeses are there to help people when they call or come to seek help. I read where people have to make appointments now. Not keep the doors locked and let people come in to get help, that is what a ministry is all about. Not have hateful people answering the phone, people who could care less.

There have been many employees and supporters that have left or been fired from Shelter Rock Ministries. After the people work or volunteer at Shelter Rock for a while, they begin to see whats going on there. Some people stay longer and just try to rationalize in there mind that an affair involving Steven Reese and Megan cant be really happening. They will notice that Megan is not working very much. Is often missing for unexplainable large amounts of time or a day or two. She alone would ride, fly, eat out and stay at hotels with the Reese's on many occasions. Many of these times she was missing, the location of Steven Reese or Catherine Reese were also unknown as they were not at Shelter Rock. During the same time one of them would be out of town to a known location and the other just not there. You don't have to be a genius to see that there is something going with them and that what you see on TV is completely different than experiencing Shelter Rock in person. As in Jaw dropping different. Volunteering for a few hours is not enough to know. For years the staff and volunteers plugged along on broken or inadequate equipment. While the Reese's enjoyed the opposite in their work and Personal life at the expense of Shelter Rock Ministries bank account.
Here are a few of the names of people that are no longer affiliated with Shelter Rock. M******, C*****, J**, J**, L****, P******,E****, D****, R*****, S****, R****, J****, S****,B****, K**, T******, A***, M****,D*****. There are many more. Some of these people Do Not know a few of the details that are explained here or on other web sites by others. They just left because they knew something was not right there. You could feel it in your heart, soul and mind. During the time spent at shelter rock, Steven's teachings are brainwashing and manipulating you to keep you blinded spiritually, mentally and emotionally. The spirit of the one True Living God is not there. Steven has a Power over the staff. You have or will hear various stories and lies regarding the reasons they are not there any more. YOU NEED TO GET THE FACTS FROM THOSE PEOPLE, You know who some of them are! FIND THEM! Steven is a very convincing speaker who has conditioned his communicating skills. He uses that to manipulate and convince the aforementioned people that they should not go public with what they know and that it is their imaginations gone wild OR Under threat of law suits or be the blame for Shelter Rock being destroyed, the witnesses that include his sons have gone on there way and tried to move on. They have been mentally abused, emotionally hurt and wounded in their hearts because of what has taken place at SRM. It is sad because we were ALL-IN for the beginning cause of the ministry. Steven Reese let the enemy have victories through greed of money and fame and the lust for a young woman and worldly treasures.
Pray for those dear people that endured until they could not keep going along with the false representations of the Reese's and their cover ups.
Sincerely,
A Former Shelter Rock friend, employee, volunteer and sponsor.

True and public repentance from the Reese's and Megan. God will forgive. He may not allow them to remain at Shelter Rock, but forgiveness from and reconciliation with God, friends and their family can take place.

I have witnessed many inappropriate actions, behavior and lies told by Steven and Catherine. There are many problems within their private corporation (so called non profit). All the provision given away by them is donated by other large organizations. These goods are totaled up at retail value and then combined with cash received by donors. You are then told that approximately 97.3 percent of what you give is used for the ministry such as helping a poor Appalachian child. When in fact, Most of the money given to SRM is going to support the overworked 5 or 6 employees meager salaries (none over $30k yr), television air time, $3000 month rent for their ministry building not $1. month as told by the Reeses, Steven Reese and Catherine Reese's $70,000 salary EACH (140,000) plus additionally their home ($2300. mo) is paid for by the ministry as well as both their trucks, gas, food, auto insurance second home, second office.
Also they each get a 24,000 expense account. Not bad for hardly ever showing up for work and getting approximately $235,000 total compensation a year (rough guesstimate). Go to SRM during the week and you will most likely not find them there. How can they be there much when they live in Charleston, SC. They are last to show up for the day of blessing events and first to leave. They dine, drive, fly, vacation world wide and live in high class style on the monthly $30. from thousands of people hoping for a better life for the Appalachian people and the message of Christ,s love to be sent to them believing all the while you are sponsoring a child with the money you send to SHELTER ROCK MINISTRIES. The ONE child you AND OTHERS are sponsoring, probably has not been seen or heard from in a year or even 3 years.
Meanwhile in the past couple years many employees have left the private corporation with no accountability called SHELTER ROCK MINISTRIES for various reasons that are despicable and are heartbreaking for those who have found out the truth about SRM. Steven and Catherine Reese are living a lie not the Word. The board members know nothing of what really goes on at SHELTER ROCK MINISTRIES. The SECRETS are deep and blatantly sinful. The board has very little input, no power to be useful and certainly is not in any position to hold SRM accountable. They know nothing of the following problems: waste of money for the Reese's lavish lifestyle, the small amount of time the Reese's spend working in the ministry, the fact that employees and supprters left SRM because of the affair that was swept under the rug which involved Steven Reese and another woman (Megan Dean) that still works at SRM, the near 2009 eviction from the building in Boone, NC for being over a year and a half behind on rent, The judgment in 2010 for $100,000 against SHELTER ROCK MINISTRIES for work done to the building the ministry is in, another judgment for unpaid bills, straight out lies about how many people they reach, number of people that professed acceptance of Christ. These are just a few of the things that go on there. The board Knew nothing of these things while it was happening and probably not now either.
The Reese's claimed to have sold their business to go be missionaries in the Appalachian mountains. The fact is in 1998 they bought a house in Boone NC. In 1999 they lost their house in Winston Salem NC to foreclosure. In 2001 SHELTER ROCK MINISTRIES inc was formed. In 2002 they nearly lost their house in Boone to foreclosure but saved it the the day before the auction. They lost their small business prior to starting SRM. It does not sound like there was a lot of money from a sale of a business, which would mean they did not give up a lot to go be missionaries as they claim. Since 2001, They have been building a new business (SRM) to enable them to semi retire while the ministry can be managed by a few employees and the occasional guidance from Steven and Catherine Reese.
No matter what has happened at SRM. Praise be to God for the souls that have been saved by srm showing up where they have gone to. Gods word will not return void. Those people that accepted Jesus as their personal savior will be in heaven regardless of the things that have transpired within the corrupt organization. I think one should seek many details of any organization that you intend to support. Don't just give your money away based on a few very well rehearsed speeches given by a professional speaker trained to look and act for the camera that is NOT a seminary educated pastor. He is a self taught and educated business man running a private for profit business under the pretense of non profit.

Fire the Reese's and implement a board of directors that has accountability to themselves and that can hold the new director of Shelter Rock Ministries accountable. All aspects of this organization should be available for public view.

I am a Eastern Shoshone on the Wind River Indian Reservation. These Reese people came to our reservation NOT to help the Native American people but to humiliate us. They told us they were here to help out the tribe not to USE us....I am very upset because they took footage of my 1 year old daughter and I did NOT sign any release forms for this. They also recorded audio of my voice telling them how it was living on the reservation. I also did not sign for that. They said they were here to help us not to use us as a way to get money. I speak for the tribe when i say this. THEY ARE NOT WELCOME BACK ON OUR RESERVATION!!!!!!! They are not good people they disrespected my family, my tribe and my church! This is not tolorated and will not be tolorated.

I am a pastor's wife at a tiny Baptist Church/Center on the Wind River Indian Reservation. My husband and I have served the people of the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Araphoe tribes for over 16 years. Steve Reese showed up unannounced in our driveway one day this past fall asking us to work with him as he brought a truckload of food to our community. We were eager to do so as the food IS needed by many families here on the reservation. However, we have been sadly disappointed by the Reeses and Shelter Rock Ministries. -The Reeses refused to distribute the food equally between the two tribes on our reservation creating a great deal of animosity toward us personally and toward our church among the older members of one of the tribes on our joint reservation. -The Reeses spent no time doing on the actual work of the distribution themselves. When questioned about this Catherine Reese responded, "I was preparing food for the volunteers."...They did travel 15 miles to and from the nearest Pizza Hut to purchase pizza for 2 of the 5 meals needed to feed the volunteers, but I do not believe that she was employed by Pizza Hut at any time during the week! lol -The plan for distribution that the Reeses use involves a tremendous amount of unnecessary labor. Instead of rebagging the food in plastic sacks that tear, the food could easily be given away with 1 or 2 volunteers per item.....this would eliminate about 80% of the work required by the current plan. -Steve Reese originally promised our church a part of the food to be given away for our church pantry from which we provide 2 free meals a week in return for our participation in the project. However, no food was ever given to us and when we mentioned that we had given some food to a sister church/in-house-treatment ministry which sent volunteers twice to assist in the project Steve seemed very upset and demanded to how much and what we had given away. -The canned food was all dented and with no labels. Most of the rest of the food was somewhat to very far past the expiration dates. There were mouse droppings in the pallet of macaroni and almost half of the packages were crushed to where they were open and spilling out. -Steve told me that he had spent over $100,000 dollars on the food on the Saturday before it was given out. On the Sunday afternoon of the distribution Catherine told me that they had spent $5000 on the food. (I noticed a slight discrepancy between the 2 numbers!) Also several of the workers noticed company labels on the pallets specifying that it had been donated from the original company. -At the begining of the week that we were working with the Reeses and Shelter Rock Ministries, my husband was asked to take the Reeses around the community to some homes with children so that they could give the kids toys and the parents gift cards to Wal-Mart. The day for this activity was changed and I ended up going with them. We had come to understand that they wanted to use this as a photo-op for their fund raising. We were very uncomfortable with this but did contact 3 families giving them as clear an understanding of what was to take place as we knew...however, after getting a parent to sign a very indepth, extremely legalized consent form (of which no copy was given to the parent), I discovered that they were walking the children out of view of the parents if possible and filming a sponsorship plea. This was repeated at the givaway site without parental permission or oversight....I am furious!!!!!!!!

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

...remove the Reeses from leadership...ensure that no more children/families are exploited in the fund-raising of this charity scam...ensure that the food provided to needy families is safe for human consumption...ensure that local co-ordinators fully understand the size of the project....ensure that all Indian reservation churches are aware of the danger of such people!
