In 1996, my husband, a retired Elementary School Principal and I, a retired School Library Teacher, both volunteered to help the Books for Kids Foundation. We were very impressed with their mission statement that would help children in under-served areas. We were excited to support their efforts to fashion small library centers that would have a staying power and serve children in low income areas in and around New York City where these youngsters could become inspired readers. We set up 15 small libraries with storytelling corners which included a rocking chair, area rug, puppets, posters and hard covered first rate children's books. We continue to visit several of the libraries and work with the staff members by working on Author Studies as well as follow-up activities for many of the books. We have been able to invite authors and book illustrators to share their talents with us. As The New Yorker of the Week in 2005 I was able to proudly be interviewed at one of our Books for Kids Libraries which attracted much attention. We have a hard working, forward looking Director whose mission is to find a surefire way to bring the love of reading to all children. The motto of this wonderful non-profit organization might well be, "One library at a time, we are always growing."

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I have seen the overwhelming response from the staff and children when they enter their library. Each center has a dedicated Director and staff eager to support our efforts. The foundation has created libraries that make a significant contribution to the communities they service. Parents are so impressed with the libraries that they consider this when registering their children to the various sites.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

seek, in this difficult economy, to double efforts to raise the money needed to support this worthy foundation. Seeing first hand all the benefits that Books for Kids offers to so many youngsters, I would try to reach out to many more people so that we could restock and keep our beautiful libraries up to date with all of the latest books.

What one change could this group make that would improve your volunteer experience?

I would say that the biggest challenge facing this organization is gaining more support and contributions to keep the foundation growing and current. We must work hard to improve and support our current libraries and create additional funding for new books and materials.

Did your volunteer experience have an effect on you? (teaching you a new skill, or introducing new friends, etc.)

I would like to say THANK YOU to Books for Kids, who through their commitment, support and encouragement have inspired us to volunteer our help over the years. We have seen your growth as an organization and are proud to be a part of a very worthy foundation.

In an age of information overload and technology, the Books for Kids Foundation takes a back-to-basics approach that begins with a child and a book. This organizations, which builds libraries in at-risk communities, helps not only children, but entire communities. With each new library creation, we see hope and excitement. I am honored to be a part of such a vital resource for young children who otherwise would be left at a disadvantage. Success start with a child and a book, and it starts with the Books for Kids Foundation.

Books for Kids is a tremendous organization providing children with the fundamental tool to grow and become better people. Just as the names suggests, this is a transparent charity that provides books FOR kids. Through the development of libraries, learning centers, workshops with parents/guardians/children, and an equally fun and productive experience, Books for Kids makes the first step in development easier and accessible for thousands of children. Many people take for granted the power of reading, but this organization understands the importance and makes reading a fun experience that will hopefully help kids for the rest of their lives.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

As a member of the Junior Board, we have been able to generate significant interest and have started raising awareness to a diverse group of donors and supporters. It is easy for people to get behind such a simple (but critical) cause.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Continue raising awareness and working the grassroots route. Being able to bring a fun, colorful, safe reading environment to all kids from all backgrounds would be a wonderful starting point to education reform in this country.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

Helping children learn and creating an environment for kids at an early age to understand how fun reading can be.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

An incredible group of dedicated folks from different backgrounds, making for a very productive environment.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Significantly help hundreds of thousands of kids through multiple decades by providing fun, safe learning environments. Strong readers are the foundation for innovative, productive, moral future generations.

Ways to make it better...

It's excellent and we have the ability to make a difference which we are doing one step at a time.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

Funding and technological capabilities.

One thing I'd also say is that...

Reading is paramount to a higher quality of life. It is the ONE tool that enables indivudals to overcome their circumstances and rise above it all. Whether we help one child or thousdands, we are improving the future with each step.

Books for Kids is a fabulous organization, and for over two decades has provided a valuable service to thousands of children. I have had the great pleasure of being a member of the Executive Committee for nearly 2 years. During this time I have seen first hand the countless hours the staff has poured into the mission of improving early childhood education for underprivileged children. What's more is I have seen first hand the great outcomes this organization has delivered to underprivileged children throughout the New York-Tri State area.

This organization is a perfect non-profit to volunteer with because they work with underprivileged children and really dedicate their time to a single reachable goal; to promote literacy! I was impressed with their drive and I could see that they really need promotional materials to help get their cause publicized. I was able to visit a couple of Books for Kids libraries and they are beautiful sites, full of books, and caring teachers. This is a great organization.

I was a volunteer photographer for the Books for Kids Foundation at the Tribeca Family festival in NYC. I found the entire Books for Kids team to be professional and they were a lot of fun to work with. The atmosphere of the event was upbeat and the library they built was just gorgeous. The library attracted a lot of parents with their kids and so many of the children loved having their photo taken with "Maddy" the Books for Kids' mascot. There were also so many great photos of families reading together. I was just glad to be a small part of an organization that wanted to inform parents about how important reading is to their children.

Being in the education and library field for 16 years it was great to see the work that Books For Kids is doing in the many communities they work in. Restoring and upgrading libraries is their main goal and my company DEMCO is happy to work with them. The staff is extremely professional and dedicated to the growth of libraries and the way they affect children..They are a great organization.

Volunteering my time for this foundation was great. The library that was created for the children blew me away. It made me feel like a child again. I taught a few parents about saving money and they were very grateful and receptive to hearing me out. The children were younger then expected but great to be around. We spoke about money. It was great to be stimulating their minds in an already stimulating atmosphere.

The simple philosophy of the Books for Kids Foundation is what makes this organization unique, effective, and far-reaching. Books for Kids exists to bring together "a book and a child." It is an effort that no one can oppose, and all can rejoice in. Books for Kids is a commendable non-profit because it fills in a gap in underserved children's lives, and by providing this one service --books, literacy programs, and early childhood exposure to a print-rich environment-- it will help children for their entire lives. Access to books and reading in early childhood will not only help each of these children do well in kindergarten and their lives, it also allows them access to the magical, vast world contained within the pages of a book and to the stories that make up the cultural tapestry of growing up in America. A welcoming room filled with great books, cozy carpets, and inspiring messages is all it takes to inspire a love of reading in kids who otherwise may not have access to books. These cozy libraries can improve early childhood literacy in a community, and over time this can lead to communities of people with overall higher levels of more quality education and less people in prison. Books for Kids actions are simple, but they change entire communities and neighborhoods for the better.

The Books For Kids foundation created the library at Graham Windham Day Care Center and it was such a wonderful idea. The setting is really nice. One teacher said that "children should read everyday in order to develop their language skills. It's like taking a mini trip to the library." Another teacher said "there are a lot of books we can use for our classroom thematic units. The children can read the books and then put them back on the shelves according to the corresponding color coded dot system." Another teacher said "The room is bright and colorful. The listening area is nice. The children can interact with the puppets. The puppets can be used to help tell a story." The library is a wonderful gift, it's inviting and we will cherish it.Thank You Books for Kids!
