Mission: To ensure the survival of the bonobo (pan paniscus) and its habitat in the congo basin, the second largest rainforest in the world. By protecting bonobos and the forests in which they live, we mitigate climate change and provided irreplaceable ecosystem services of significance on a global scale. Working in partnership with local and indigenous congolese people through cooperative conservation and community development programs, as well as on national and international policy, bci is establishing new protected areas, improving the livelihood of communities, and leading efforts to safeguard bonobos wherever they are found.

Programs: Sankuru nature reserve & community carbon initiative: established first large-scale community-managed rainforest reserve spanning 11,803 sq. Mi. Capacity building of local management team; provision of equipment and training for local communities. Development of long-term financing through redd+ program to mitigate climate change through rainforest protection.

the bonobo peace forest and kokolopori bonobo reserve: kokolopori (1,847 sq. Mi. ) is the pilot and model for the bonobo peace forest: an integrated chain of community-managed forest reserves, covering an estimated 50,000 km2. Includes reserve management and wildlife protection; scientific surveys and monitoring of bonobos and biodiversity; training and education; local livelihood, healthcare and sustainable development initiatives.

awareness & education: in-situ and ex-situ raising awareness of bonobos and their importance, rainforest biodiversity and the critical crises of species loss, forest protection and climate change. Watershed values, problems of bushmeat hunting and illegal wildlife trade covered. Co-founded regional college for conservation and rural development - the only institute of higher learning within a 70,000 km2 area.
