Birth Roots changed my experience when I first became a mother. The support, the understanding, the array of resources helped me feel less alone in the transition of becoming a mother. I needed Birth Roots so much, that I quit my old job and joined Birth Roots board, then started facilitating classes! It is a much needed community resource for our area to support new families with celebrating the joy and beauty of becoming new parents as well as the struggles and challenges it also brings. The directors - Leah and Emily are brilliant!!

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

Hearing the feedback from mothers and families.

More feedback...

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

The difference a community of caring mothers and parents can make during the first year of having an infant. I have seen experiences with infants transformed in a positive way (including mine!)

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

Kind, supportive, open, and helpful.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

Make a resource like this available in every community! Content, supported, loving families create supporting loving children which translates to a loving supportive world.

Birth Roots is an amazing place. What they offer women, children, and families in the community is truly not available anywhere else. Their non-medical model for supporting new parents offers a caring and safe environment for deep learning. Men and women get the information and support they need to feel empowered throughout the perinatal period; facing labor and birth from a place of strength and knowledge, they start their parenting journey off on the right foot.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

I personally experienced the empowerment of Birth Roots before, during, and after the birth of my now two year-old son. I felt ready for the rite of passage that is labor and deliverly. I was completely supported during the post-partum phase with my baby.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I'd love to see Birth Roots expand and be able to serve more people in Southern Maine. That's one reason I got more involved!

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

change the world for the better, one pregnant mama at a time!

Ways to make it better...

I could ahve worked less and hung out at Birth Roots more!

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

not enough money and exposure to get the word out and the work done.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I LOVE Birth Roots!

Birth Roots is the most personally helpful, most inspiring organization I've ever seen in action (and I consult with nonprofits, so that's saying a lot). As a pregnant first-time parent who recently moved to the area, my husband and I went into this experience feeling completely alone, and a year later, we feel that BR is responsible for our entire social support network and so much of our confidence as new parents. From our childbirth education (Birthing From Within) to the amazing, unique Blossoming Newborns series (with classes for each postnatal "trimester") to a breastfeeding prep class and drop-in group, Birth Roots' orientation has always been about helping us to become educated, understand our choices, and feel fully empowered as new parents - setting the stage and tone for all of our parenting experiences yet to come. We have also taken advantage of prenatal couples counseling, postpartum doula support, lactation support, and baby sign and singing classes, and we turn to Birth Roots' community resource guide every time we need help finding services or provides. EVERY NEW PARENT NEEDS A BIRTH ROOTS IN THEIR LIVES - IT ISN'T A LUXURY, BUT A NECESSITY. It is not an exaggeration to say that this organization is the reason I as a new mother survived pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. I could never have known in advance how much new parents - particularly new mothers - need (physically, psychologically, emotionally), nor how this transition would be the defining experience that sets the tone for family dynamics to come. Because BR is so responsible for my sense of success as a new parent, I have joined their Board and recommend them to every pregnant person (even pre-conception families) I meet.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

all aspects of my parenting. From feeling like I had so much support that I was never a candidate for postpartum depression to having the courage to make professional choices that would help balance career and family, Birth Roots is responsible.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the people I've met, from birth and early parenting professionals who are now my biggest mentors as a new mother, to the other new parents in our "flock" who are a tight social support system.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

simply the best. Trained doulas, perinatal educators, and counselors who are some of the most passionate, dedicated folks I've ever encountered.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

roll out its model across the country and strengthen families (and therefore entire communities) by setting them on a course for success from the start. There's international potential for the Birth Roots model, too.
