Birth Roots is to the perinatal phase (9 months before and 9 months after birth) what a doula is to the hours of labor and childbirth, an advocate for acknowledging and meeting a birthing woman's non-clinical needs to feel safe and central to her process of becoming a mother, both physically and emotionally. Women who participate in the Birth Roots Community gain increased self-awareness about their transition and are much less likely to feel traumatized by the birth process and are more able to employ skills and resources for preventing postpartum depression.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... watching a community of mothers/families learn to rely on each other, benefiting from my own "Flock" of parents to grow with, helping first time mothers feel confident and competent through this vulnerable time.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the level of connection I feel to other women during a time [early parenting] when many women are most likely to feel isolated and alone.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… expand the outreach, promotion & marketing budget so that more perinatal families can experience the benefits of this model of community support during the postnatal trimesters

I attended a prenatal class at Birth Roots that was by far the best class I have taken anywhere, ever. I thought I had read every book and was prepared for labor, but the prenatal class took birth preparation to a different level. It was a very powerful educational experience that impacted the participants as individuals, parents and couples. The newborn class was also amazing. I don't know how I would have survived the first three months with my very fussy daughter without the tools, laughter and wisdom that emerged from that group. Birth Roots is an incredible community builder. Our group is still getting together weekly nine months later to support each other as hard working, new moms. These are friendships that were born at Birth Roots and are here to stay.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... my skills and attitude as a parent. By being a more confident mom, I am also able to reach out and be a more supportive and active partner, friend and community member. Birth Roots strengthens individuals, partnerships and creates communities.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... the magic that is created through their classes and the women who teach and attend them. That magic affects me every day as a new mom.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... informed, warm, down-to-earth, healing, supportive and overall wonderful human beings
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... revolutionize the parenting experience for our generation, save thousands of partnerships and heal our fragmented communities
Ways to make it better!
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… get the word out to more pregnant women so that they benefit early from Birth Roots. It would be helpful if more classes could be offered to address issues throughout the parenting experience, from toddlers to teenagers.

Very important experience after my son was born - went 1x a week (at least) on and off for the first 6 months for classes and just to hang out with other new moms. Helped SO MUCH to normalize the experience, get help learning how to care for my son and myself, and connect with other women going through similar things. Still in touch with other moms/babies one year later!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... how it helped me learn specific parenting strategies and also transition into my identity as a new mom of a young infant. Without it, I would have been more isolated and at risk for postpartum depression and problematic attachment issues with my son.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… Develop services into the first 3 years of a new child's life - parenting classes, drop-in groups and workshops to address developmental needs of children birth to 3 and their families.

After giving birth to my son, I realized I was not at all prepared to care for an infant. I don't think you can be truly prepared. But fortunately, I stumbled upon Birthroots. The weekly classes I took provided a place to talk, laugh, and learn with other mothers. We commiserated over our sleepless nights and learned that we weren't alone in raising our newborns. I finished taking my classes seven months ago but still meet for weekly playgroups with the friends I met at Birthroots. I feel truly lucky that I found Birthroots when I did.

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... I still meet for weekly playgroups with the mothers I met at Birthroots.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... how it helped me survive the sleepless of raising a newborn.
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... empathatic and knowledgeable.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... provide support to every mother and baby.
Ways to make it better!
  • My experience would have been better if... I had learned about Birthroots sooner.
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… make sure all new mothers know about and have access to the newborn classes at Birthroots.
  • In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are... maintaining their funding so they can continue offer great classes.

Birth Roots changed my experience when I first became a mother. The support, the understanding, the array of resources helped me feel less alone in the transition of becoming a mother. I needed Birth Roots so much, that I quit my old job and joined Birth Roots board, then started facilitating classes! It is a much needed community resource for our area to support new families with celebrating the joy and beauty of becoming new parents as well as the struggles and challenges it also brings. The directors - Leah and Emily are brilliant!!

The Great!
  • I've seen the results of this organization in... Hearing the feedback from mothers and families.
  • What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is... The difference a community of caring mothers and parents can make during the first year of having an infant. I have seen experiences with infants transformed in a positive way (including mine!)
  • The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were... Kind, supportive, open, and helpful.
  • If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could... Make a resource like this available in every community! Content, supported, loving families create supporting loving children which translates to a loving supportive world.
Ways to make it better!
  • If I had to make changes to this organization, I would… Find funding for them so marketing could be done so more new families in the area could utilize Birth Roots and for the directors to get paid fairly and offer more classes and community support!
