I have been a volunteer Greeter for over ten years, having had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world. Many who come to New York come with expectations that have been made through movies, some good, some not so good, but they are always amazed at the real thing. We have volunteers that are familiar with each of the boroughs and speak many languages so they not only receive a free tour but in a language in which they are comfortable, and to places that interest them.
Little things like passing an animal grooming shop, or finding they can take their handicapped child in the bus, just like any other kid, because the stairs can be lowered to allow a wheelchair to enter. Since they don't have to take time learning to navigate our city, every precious minute is used to its fullest.
Because of the success of these visits, we have been able to go to other countries as well as other cities here in the US helping to form the same kind of service.
Big Apple Greeter has also partnered with Make a Wish Foundation and NYC providing Greeters to man tables at conventions and other important events.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

many ways. I escorted a lady and her ten year old daughter, from Denmark, around the city, stopping at parks for the youngster to have time to play. The mom wrote an article, with pictures of her Greeter tour. Some years later I had another lady from the same city who told me she had read a wonderful article about NY some years back and put coming to NY on her must do list.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not be able to think of any thing that they haven't already thought of.

I have been a Big Apple Volunteer for many years and love it. People around the world are so grateful to me everytime I take them on a tour around various neighborhoods in Manhattan. Big Apple Greeter provides a wonderfu, free service to visitors all over the world and really enhances the reputation of New York as a wonderful place to live or visit.

I joined Big Apple Greeter as a volunteer because I know that seeing a city with a local is so much richer than just wandering around with a guidebook. I have shared my knowledge of the City, especially Greenwich Village and the downtown areas with more than one hundred visitors from many English-speaking countries. I like to show them the neighborhoods that they would never spend time in otherwise. The City's major sights are wonderful but there's something so special about walking the streets and pointing out details. I like to show them how neighborhoods can change dramatically just by turning a corner such as the shift from the Courts into Chinatown. It's always exciting to me when I take a family or a couple through the Winter Garden and out onto the walking area, and give them their first, unexpected view of the Statue of Liberty.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Try to get the MTA to provide subway day passes again. We volunteers have to pay our own way, along with our visitors.

I have proudly been a Big Apple Greeter since 2008, and I have shown more than 100 people our great city of New York! Big Apple Greeter improves the image of New York City in the eyes of visitors, by giving visitors an intimate view of the city through the eyes of a native New Yorker. These visitors in turn, collectively spend billions of dollars in the city eating at local restaurants, shopping, and supporting businesses such as local mom & pop stores. Big Apple Greeter is an organization worthy of support, as it helped to make New York City one of the number one tourist destinations, not only in the country, but in the world!
