My family has been part of the Bet Alef community for 7 years, after having belonged to several other Jewish synagogues and communities in the Seattle area in the previous 16 years. We had hesitated to check out Bet Alef because services are held in Bellevue and we didn't think we wanted to drive that far on Shabbat - but by just a short time into our first visit, we knew we had found our spiritual home - and the drive became (most of the time!) another opportunity for contemplation and mindfulness. We also feel very lucky to have become part of the community in time for both of our sons to have become Bar Mitzvah under the tutelage of Rabbis Ted and Olivier.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

a profound deepening of my own Jewish learning and connection to the Jewish people and the land of Israel (Rabbi Ted has taken several groups of us to Israel for meditation retreats) as well as an opening to the importance of interfaith work.

What I've enjoyed the most about my experience with this nonprofit is...

the special teachings that Rabbis Ted and Olivier offer on Judaism as a practice of awakening to Oneness and a map of the evolution of consciousness; and the amazing community of kind, generous and warm-hearted people.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

incredibly dedicated and willing to be of service.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

share these Jewish teachings of awakening to the One so much more widely. Many of our members turned away from Judaism ages ago until finding conscious Jewish spiritual practice at Bet Alef. I know there are lots of people who long for this perspective.

I found this community in early 2001. What a find!!! Not only were the teachings amazing, the people were wonderful. I never thought I'd go to Friday night services on a regular basis. Thanks to Bet Alef, I love going!

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

hire more staff and pay everyone more...they so deserve it.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

open the hearts and minds of so many. A little money goes a long way.

Ways to make it better...

honestly, I don't think it could have been better.

In my opinion, the biggest challenges facing this organization are...

mainly financial.

One thing I'd also say is that...

I also would love more traditional music. As much as I love the music, I miss the melodies from my youth.

Despite being Jewish by birth, I've never practiced traditional religion of any kind. By chance, I went to a service at Bet Alef in 2002 and the first teaching I listened to spoke to my heart. Think of a synagogue that is inclusive of all denominations. Imagine a synagogue emphasizing the mystical traditions of Kabbalah combined with the understanding of the tradition seen as a journey of consciousness. And recognize that the current Rabbi, Olivier Ben Haim is thru his wisdom, kindness, strength and modesty...not to speak of humour, the perfect vehicle thru which this spiritual and intellectual exploration is offered.

the teachings and the vibrant community.

The kinds of staff and volunteers that I met were...

unfailingly helpful and friendly.

If this organization had 10 million bucks, it could...

do so very much to add to a peaceful, intelligent, explorative vision thru expanded classes, teachings in the larger world, and connecting people of different faiths to recognize that although the emphasis may differ, all religions strive towards wholeness

Ways to make it better...

the music includes some traditional music.

I've been involved with Bet Alef over the past 12 years. As a teenager, it gave me a platform for spiritual growth and Jewish identity. Now, as a mother of 3, the synagogue has been there for me for my wedding, the bris of my boys, and now as a community for my children to grow in. Thank you! Ruby
