I have been associated with many philanthropic organizations throughout my life and must say that as many organizations provide much needed assistance to the specific cause. That said, Bering Omega has stood out, as being truly committed to ensuring the maximum of each dollar raised goes to the individual needing assistance. Bering Omega raises the bar for all nonprofit and charitable organizations. BRAVO BERING OMEGA--John A. Evatz-

After taking the tour of Bering Omega Community Services, I was astonished at the work provided through the programs they offer. The Dental Clinic far exceeds any expectation you would have for a non-profit offering such services. Once you walk through the door, you feel as if you are in any dentist office anywhere. Omega House offers such a warm home like experience for those who are in their late stage of AIDS and have no where else to turn before their life ends. The volunteers Bering Omega has are the most compassionate to sit there day in and day out with the clients letting them know someone does truly care.

Bering Omega is the little nonprofit that could. This organization has tremendous heart and passion, as an employee I see this every day. People come first here, and isn't that what you want from a health and human service organization?? I've learned so much in the year I've been here - not just about HIV/AIDS, but about the human spirit, courage, and compassion.

I have been working at Bering Omega Community Services for a year now and it has truly been an eye opening experience. I had no idea how much HIV/AIDS impacts are community still. The programs and services that the organization offers its clients really help them live their life better and manage the disease. The program managers are all so passionate about the work they do. Overall, the organization, its donors, volunteers, and supporters are truly helping us create Everyday Miracles for the clients. I highly recommend this organization.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

during the Pride Parade. It is so great to see the emotion on people's faces when they saw Bering Omega Community Services at the parade. I can only imagine we have impacted their lives somehow in the most positive way.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

try to create a greater awareness in other smaller communities, like the African American and Hispanic communities here in Houston.

I began my work with Bering Omega Community Services through the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. I served as a full-time volunteer, 40 hours per week for a year, at their dental clinic, Day Treatment Program, and Omega House, their residential hospice. Words cannot describe the impact that opportunity had on me. I was fortunate enough to get hired as a Front Desk Coordinator at the Dental Clinic after my volunteer year, and I have now served as the Volunteer Coordinator for just over a year.
I feel blessed and fortunate to be able to provide similar experiences to new volunteers looking to make a difference in their community. I also see the work that is done for our clients, not only by volunteers, but by our staff, and I feel fortunate that we are able to provide the services we do. Without our agency, our clients lives would be lacking, to say the least.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

the satisfaction of knowing that we provide essential services to persons affected by HIV/AIDS.

Ways to make it better...

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

increase funding to provide more services to more clients!

When I decided to connect through volunteer work with the Houston community I e-mailed a dozen organizations listed on the web-site "Volunteer Houston." Omega House was the only response I received. It was a prompt, informative and welcoming response that offered training to fit my schedule. My training was thorough and prepared me very well for my involvement at Omega House. What I've found as a volunteeer is a warm, welcoming, appreciative family of staff and volunteers who care about what they are doing and express that care easily and often to the clients and their families. I've heard family members clients express what a blessing Omega House is, that they don't know what they would have done without it, and how much they feel welcomed and supported by everyone at Omega House. As a volunteeer Omega House is a blessing in my life too.

The Great!

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

my interaction with the families of clients who express their gratitude for Omega House, as well as in the smiles and appreciation of the clients.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

invite and encourage some crafts, games and live music at Omega House. This is currently provided at the Bering-Omega Care Center and a scaled down version of this program could add some fun and diversion to Omega House clients who may not be up to traveling to the Care Center or want as large and as structured a format as the current program at the Care Center.

I work with the clients on a daily base and see new client when they come in. I always ask new clients what services that they are interested in and do my best to let them know where to go. One time a client wanted a spanish support group, however; I did not know of one yet. I found one about a month later and let the client know. To my surprise she was not interested. I asked her why, and she said "I already have one" as she pointed to all of the Day Treatment Program participants. Through our staff/volunteers/clients we are able provide a great support group for those who enter our doors. I was happily surprised by her comment, because it goes to show the supportive atmosphere we are provide for our clients.

Through Bering Omega's services, the staff/volunteers are able to help those who have come off the street diagnosed HIV and lost as to what to do next. For some of our clients they just do not know where to turn and we work with them to get them into the services that they need and provide a huge support network for them. I am so glad to be a part of such a great organization that strides to better every client; one person at a time.

This is a great organization, which provides essential dental, hospice, and day care services to people living with HIV/AIDS. It is amazing how many people the organization can help in our local community. Please come by to volunteer for a day or learn more about the organization.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

Give the organization access to more capital to perform more services for a larger population of Houstonians.

I started volunteering at Omega House back in February. I didn't think I would like working with a hospice, but gave it a try. I stayed in the kitchen and cleaned the first month or so, but the patients there are so wonderful and the staff and other volunteers are very understanding and let me come out of my shell on my own time. I look forward to going there and helping out the best I can

I have been volunteering at Bering Omega adult treatment center for about 5 months. It is one of the most rewarding and fun volunteer jobs I have ever had. I have been a volunteer in various capacities for organizations in Houston for 30 years and this is one of the best jobs ever. I feel that my time and energy is put to good use and I look forward to going every week. The program is well organized and planned.

I really enjoy encouraging the clients to participate in the activities. It is especially rewarding to see them encourage each other and care for each other. Clients come from a wide variety of backgrounds, so it is interesting to see the different approaches and ideas expressed. They truly are a supportive community as evidenced by the recent death of a client.

Really cannot think of a thing I would change except get them more funding so they can do all of the things they would like to do.
