Issues: Civil Rights, Philanthropy, Women

Location: 5 Thomas Circle NW Fourth floor Washington DC 20005 USA

Mission: Becky Lee Women's Support Fund (Becky's Fund) was founded in November 2006 by Becky Lee, an advocate and attorney for battered women's rights. After seeing the lack of support for small domestic violence organizations, she decided to create an organization to help both battered women and other organizations that fight domestic violence continue the work they were doing on behalf of these battered women.
Results: Through our Emergency Services and Support program, on a monthly basis, we are directly working with about 10 clients, adding up to about 120 families a year. Last year, we helped about 30 women through our Financial Literacy program and this year we look to assist over 40 women and their families. Through our National Domestic Violence College Tour, we have reached over 50 schools and over 10,000 students over the past 7 years. Over the last 5 years of the Becoming Your Own Heroine program, we have reached over 1,000 young girls. We will be working with over 400 young men from 2013 – 2015 in the Men of Code program. We look forward to working with over 25 families during 2013 through our Peace at Home program.
Programs: Issue: 1 in 4 women are affected by domestic violence. Program: Emergency Services and Support Through our direct services, we assist survivors with finding an attorney, housing, job placement, and childcare. Issue: Lack of financial independence is the major reason for abused women to remain with their abuser.  Program: Financial Literacy Through our Financial Literacy Program, we teach survivors how to achieve financial liberation and independence through coursework on budgeting, retirement, and family planning; supported in 2012 by Northwestern Mutual and TD Bank. Issue: The highest rate of dating violence occurs between 16 to 24 years old.  Program: National Domestic Violence College Tour Our National Domestic Violence College Tour, which has reached over 45 campuses nationwide provides educational workshops, teaching male and female college students the warning signs of an abusive relationship and how to help an accountable bystander, and is sponsored by respective colleges, universities and student groups. Issue: 50-80% of teens know a peer in a violent relationship and nearly 80% of physically abused girls in their relationship remain to date their abuser.  Program: Becoming Your Own Heroine  Through our “Becoming Your Own Heroine” Program, we collaborate with the Girl Scouts and youth organizations to train and educate “tweens” on dating violence, self-defense, and artistic expression; supported in 2010 by McDonalds. Issue: Due to domestic violence being a gendered crime and problem, work must be done with men and boys to teach them how to become allies to women and girls.  Program: Men of Code Through our “Men of CODE” program, we are partnering with DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Friendship Collegiate High School to create a new program that engages men and boys to become leaders and allies in the movement to end violence against women.  MoC represents Men of Character and Ownership, Dedicated to Leading by Example. Issue: Veterans with PTSD are 2-3 times more likely than veterans without PTSD to engage in intimate partner violence.   Program: Peace at Home Through our “Peace at Home” program, we partner with mental health professionals, military, and affected military families to address the effects of PTSD on the family unit and provide support to prevent suicide and increased violence to family members.

I helped to vet and introduce a friend and client to Becky Lee and the Becky's Fund more than 2 years ago. When several other organizations could not or would not help this soon to be survivor of a violent home, Becky stepped up and stepped in. She provided the support and guidance that was needed by my young client to navigate a difficult and scary path to a new life. Since then I have come to know Becky and the organization well. Becky's Fund is a rare mix of innovation, contemporary energy, and compassion. All of those things are embodied by its Executive Director, Becky Lee. Becky fearlessly and tirelessly goes into dark places in other peoples lives and brings rays of hope. Out of that dark and violent shadow often steps a survivor, a new voice, and often times a volunteer. For those of us who get to see the work Becky and her organization do, we are left in collective awe, and inspired to do more ourselves. The passion, commitment and energy that Becky instills in others is contagious. The innovative ways in which the organization reaches different audiences is to be admired. DV is a problem that affects every strata of society -- in the Becky's Fund you will find several voices signing in concert and in perfect pitch with its several audiences. Bravo, Becky Lee!

Over the past 2 years i have watched Becky's Fund help so many women and men, not just leave a violent home, but find new homes, new jobs and manage finances. With her army of volunteers, Becky Lee not only saves lives, she restores them.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

wish that it was fully funded with a huge endowment!

Starting as an Intern in Mid-January 2011 for Becky's Fund, I soon gained an understanding of how much Becky's Fund does to prevent Domestic and Dating Violence. Becky Lee is extremely passionate about this cause and it shows in everything she does--from the events Becky's Fund hosts to the individuals Becky Lee helps. From intimate informational gatherings to large scale fashion shows, Becky's Fund is trying to reach out to the public to shed light on this topic, that is rarely discussed. Through awareness, education and support, Becky's Fund is paving the way for other organizations and individuals to join in on the campaign to defeat Domestic Violence.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing how this non-profit affects people's lives such as survivors, volunteers, interns, and event attendees. Seeing a difference being made by a small group of people is amazing.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

invite more willing and capable interns to help out and support the events and activities of Becky's Fund.

As an intern since the end of January of 2011, I have personally been honored to witness Becky Lee's extraordinary dedication to her non-profit organization. No question about it, Becky lives to empower survivors and prevent intimate partner violence. This non-profit organization achieves innovation in its efforts to raise awareness about domestic violence. I have had the exciting privilege to co-host a variety of events ranging from fashion to self-defense. Furthermore, I have gained a deeper understanding of how domestic violence is not an individual issue but a community problem.

In a recent event, I observed how a comfortable environment was created where survivors were able to tell their stories and empower all members of the audience as well as reassure victims in the audience that they were not alone.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would not temper with such an amazing organization.

As an intern at Becky's Fund, I have gained an experience that is unparalleled to any other organization. The team at Becky's Fund is tight-knit and efficient and the work we do here is towards a wonderful cause. I have learned a great deal about the issue of domestic violence and have participated in many programs that spread awareness about this problem. Becky's Fund finds new, exciting and innovative ways to teach people about domestic violence and is also incredibly hands-on and helpful with victims. This truly is a great organization to be involved with.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

hearing success stories of victims and raising awareness for the cause.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

create more workshops for young girls.

I first discovered Becky's Fund in 2007 during one of the organization's fundraising events. I was struck with how different their approach is. Becky's Fund treats Domestic Violence (DV) as a basic human rights issue without politicizing the topic. Becky's straightforward focus on education and prevention make it possible for victims to become survivors, to focus on recovery and empowerment. The organization also engages young men and women in order to help form healthy attitudes about relationships at an early stage - before behavior patterns have become set in and destructive. But Becky's Fund also directly assists survivors in recovery. There are many charity/non-profit organizations in Washington DC. It is often difficult to measure the impact some of them have on their intended cause. But with Becky's Fund, I see it every day.

I worked directly with Becky Lee to help change a survivor's locks after she left a destructive and violent relationship. It was very gratifying to experience the positive impact this had on the woman's confidence.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

I would raise more funding and push our programs out on a national level. This is a goal we strive to accomplish daily. We can always use more staff and resources!

Having personally witnessed domestic violence, there is nothing more in this world I wish to bestow on my daughter than self-empowerment and self-worth. My daughter, who is ten now, and I have volunteered with Becky's Fund for 2 1/2 years. Becky and her organization have been instrumental in my daughter's growth and understanding. From workshops with the Girl Scouts on self-empowerment and knowing your rights, to Critical Incident Awareness Training teaching her to escape possible life-threatening situations. The events and workshops have been amazing, and I do not know that I would have found alternatives if Becky's Fund did not exist.

My daughter's self-awareness.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

not do a thing.

I personally benefited from Becky’s Fund two years ago, when Becky Lee helped me escape an escalating abusive marriage. She let me stay at her place until her volunteers and I were able to find an apartment that fit within my budget, was metro accessible, and close to my job. I was not able to think clearly at that time. She provided me with emotional support, directed me on the next steps I needed to take, and took me out to meet new people and friends. I was new in this country. My husband had isolated me, and did not let me meet other people other than his own few friends and my in-laws. She supported me during my immigration process by writing an affidavit, as well as asked her volunteers to contribute their experiences regarding my case. During the last two years, lifted me up when I was down or discouraged, and accompanied me through all court appointments regarding the assault charges, as well as my divorce. In court, she testified as a witness in support of my uncontested divorce.

Becky focuses on empowering people, and educates them on recognizing the signs of domestic violence. I was blessed to have met her, as I was not willing to use public women’s shelters.

Becky is a very passionate and energetic person. She loves what she does and draws people easily in to support the cause and spread more awareness about domestic violence. Besides all her great work and growth that I have been seeing for the last two years, she is a caring, lovely and funny friend who will always be there for you with no strings attached.

I have been interning with Becky's Fund since August of last year. Since coming to Becky's I have developed more of an awareness of domestic violence as well as ways to prevent it. Becky is an amazing mentor as well as listener, and her organization is constantly pushing to think of ways to raise awareness. Just recently Becky's Fund co-hosted an event which allowed for three women speakers to tell their stories and how they overcame their situations. Becky's Fund strives continuously to seek ways of empowering women to make the right choices!

Becky's Fund tirelessly works to serve the affected community and educates the public on the issues of domestic violence. They have also been a great partner with my organization to help students in internships achieve their fullest potential in the field of non-profit management. Becky is a consummate professional and true inspiration.

In a city filled with nonprofits, many working for the same cause, sometimes it is hard to find one that is as passionate and on the same wavelength as you. Becky's Fund allowed me to channel my passion for domestic violence advocacy in a productive, fun, and effective manner. It touches my heart when we reach out to the community, through events or written pieces, and they begin to understand the need to support and strengthen the victims that live amongst them, mostly hidden and too ashamed to speak up.

I've personally experienced the results of this organization in...

seeing Becky's Fund grow exponentially each year. More volunteers leads to more support leads to more help available for victims.

If I had to make changes to this organization, I would...

work on establishing Becky Lee as a leading expert on domestic violence abuse.
