Becky Lee Women's Support Fund

Rating: 4.83 stars   64 reviews

Issues: Civil Rights, Philanthropy, Women

Location: 5 Thomas Circle NW Fourth floor Washington DC 20005 USA

Mission: Becky Lee Women's Support Fund (Becky's Fund) was founded in November 2006 by Becky Lee, an advocate and attorney for battered women's rights. After seeing the lack of support for small domestic violence organizations, she decided to create an organization to help both battered women and other organizations that fight domestic violence continue the work they were doing on behalf of these battered women.
Results: Through our Emergency Services and Support program, on a monthly basis, we are directly working with about 10 clients, adding up to about 120 families a year. Last year, we helped about 30 women through our Financial Literacy program and this year we look to assist over 40 women and their families. Through our National Domestic Violence College Tour, we have reached over 50 schools and over 10,000 students over the past 7 years. Over the last 5 years of the Becoming Your Own Heroine program, we have reached over 1,000 young girls. We will be working with over 400 young men from 2013 – 2015 in the Men of Code program. We look forward to working with over 25 families during 2013 through our Peace at Home program.
Programs: Issue: 1 in 4 women are affected by domestic violence. Program: Emergency Services and Support Through our direct services, we assist survivors with finding an attorney, housing, job placement, and childcare. Issue: Lack of financial independence is the major reason for abused women to remain with their abuser.  Program: Financial Literacy Through our Financial Literacy Program, we teach survivors how to achieve financial liberation and independence through coursework on budgeting, retirement, and family planning; supported in 2012 by Northwestern Mutual and TD Bank. Issue: The highest rate of dating violence occurs between 16 to 24 years old.  Program: National Domestic Violence College Tour Our National Domestic Violence College Tour, which has reached over 45 campuses nationwide provides educational workshops, teaching male and female college students the warning signs of an abusive relationship and how to help an accountable bystander, and is sponsored by respective colleges, universities and student groups. Issue: 50-80% of teens know a peer in a violent relationship and nearly 80% of physically abused girls in their relationship remain to date their abuser.  Program: Becoming Your Own Heroine  Through our “Becoming Your Own Heroine” Program, we collaborate with the Girl Scouts and youth organizations to train and educate “tweens” on dating violence, self-defense, and artistic expression; supported in 2010 by McDonalds. Issue: Due to domestic violence being a gendered crime and problem, work must be done with men and boys to teach them how to become allies to women and girls.  Program: Men of Code Through our “Men of CODE” program, we are partnering with DC Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Friendship Collegiate High School to create a new program that engages men and boys to become leaders and allies in the movement to end violence against women.  MoC represents Men of Character and Ownership, Dedicated to Leading by Example. Issue: Veterans with PTSD are 2-3 times more likely than veterans without PTSD to engage in intimate partner violence.   Program: Peace at Home Through our “Peace at Home” program, we partner with mental health professionals, military, and affected military families to address the effects of PTSD on the family unit and provide support to prevent suicide and increased violence to family members.

Over the past year of interning at Becky's Fund, I've gained valuable insight into the issues surrounding dating and domestic violence through Becky, the other amazing interns, the many enthusiastic volunteers, the numerous survivors willing to bravely share their stories, and so many others I have met through this organization. Each person affiliated with Becky's Fund has taught me so much about the horrors of domestic violence, the inner workings of DC area nonprofits, and life in general. Thank you, Becky and Becky's Fund, for the opportunity to spend my time helping you put an end to dating and domestic violence!

First, I'd like to say how inspiring the founder and driving force, Becky Lee, is. It's been truly a pleasure interning at Becky's Fund thus far due to its inviting office environment and the valuable learning experience I have gained in just a few weeks. Everyone is so motivated to making a difference in educating others on the devastating effects of domestic violence through programs and events that are not only informative, but also fun. Becky's Fund is unique because it's not there to simply lecture facts and statistics, but to include and educate the next generation on promoting healthy relationships.

Becky Lee and the entire Becky's Fund staff has been instrumental in playing a definite life-changing role in my own life.

When I first heard of Becky's Fund, I volunteered as a model to take a stand against domestic violence alongside many more in the District of Columbia area at the "Walk This Way" fashion show event.

Since then, I have reached out to Becky Lee's organization for my own personal reasons and she and her staff have made every effort to reach out to me in the most kind, loving, and comfortable way possible in order to assist me with such a sensitive topic.

Becky Lee, Katie and her staff have been nothing but incredible in a gentle but effective way to empower me to recognize the issue and take a stand against it in my own life, as well as in the many lives they have touched around them.
There is nothing but good and positive things coming out of this organization for everyone!

I'm a former U.S. Army Airborne Ranger & Maryland State Trooper who witnessed domestic violence throughout my life. I met Becky Lee through her organization "Becky's Fund" and became passionate in helping other through the community with domestic violence. The organization started a Young Men's Mentoring Program and I immediately wanted to help in anyway I could through Becky's Fund. Becky's Fund has organized various events, trips, professional sports events, and educational group sessions for the young men effected through domestic violence in the community. Often so many organizations focus on the women and not the men in case of domestic violence. Becky's Fund was one of the pioneer's of this approach and she embraced my experience from both my military & law enforcement background. Becky has such a passion to help anyone and everyone effected by domestic violence. At any hour of the day Becky Lee has made herself and the organization available for victims across the country. The organization is one that embraces change and is open to new approaches in confronting this issue head on. The organization is one that focus on eliminating the issue of domestic violence and opens it's doors to men, women and children of all ages when it comes to this cause. While I volunteer with every aspect of the organization I have learned both sides of the issue facing domestic violence victims. My understanding on how, why and what reason victims remain silent as well as why so many turn their backs on this cause. One couldn't sit back and remain silent when volunteering for such a well organized, focused and respected organization without joining the fight against domestic violence. I without question believe that Becky's Fund is not only an asset to the community. I believe it's the one of the most diverse organizations addressing various causes and issues to where everyone can get involved. Becky gives everything she has to the organization and challenges everyone to do the same to rid the world of domestic violence. As a volunteer, former Army Airborne Ranger and Maryland State Trooper Becky's Fund is a Win Win for everyone!

I think the best word I could use to describe Becky's Fund is "ambitious." Working here has been such a pleasure because of how sincere everyone is about the cause, and just how many different sides of the issue the Fund seeks to tackle. From fundraisers, youth violence prevention presentations and young men's mentorship to trying to expand PTSD services for military vets, Becky's Fund is committed to stopping the violence before it starts, in addition to providing legal resources and other help to victims-- truly attacking the issue on all sides!

I have known several people who have been affected by domestic violence. Not only a good friend, but also a family member has been a victim of domestic violence. This has allowed me to see first hand not only the physical abuse that can occur, but also the mental abuse of those who like to prey on people who are sometimes in a position of not being able to fight back. Becky's fund is an amazing organization that provides an avenue to help those who are seeking assistance to better their lives by getting out of a bad and potentially harmful situation. I am glad there s an organization like Becky's fund to allow those who want and need the help to obtain it.

Interning with Becky's Fund for the past three months has not only taught me the inner-workings of a non-profit, but that community involvement is what truly drives change. Becky's Fund incorporates members of its community in order to raise awareness about domestic violence, an issue that affects many, but is rarely talked about. Rebekah Lee, volunteers, interns, sponsors...the list continues of the diverse group of individuals who work tirelessly to make domestic violence a topic of discussion and to ultimately eradicate it so that everyone, regardless of race, sex, or ethnicity, can live without fear.

I have a family member who is a victim and I have seen how it can destroy a family and especially how the cycle of abuse negatively affects their children- I walk, help in anything I’m capable of, and raise funds in their honor, thanks to the amazing opportunity I have been given by Becky Lee to be part of Becky’s Fund. I want to continue to help and do anything possible to prevent that any more mothers and daughters and grand-daughters and friends have to suffer from domestic violence and this is all possible because of people who are heroes in our society, like Becky who creates an amazing organization such as Becky’s Fund, that have the courage to deal with social taboo issues such like domestic violence.

It has been a pleasure to know and work with Becky Lee and Becky’s Fund. From the smaller gatherings teaching empowerment to young girls, to the always fun and informative Walk This Way Event, Becky’s Fund pushes forward in it’s pursuit to end Domestic Violence. Combining both local outreach with Celebrity advocates, Becky’s Fund has been able to educate our youth and provide assistance to those who have been in Domestic Abuse situations. I thank Becky’s Fund and will continue to support this organizations efforts.

Becky's Fund is one of the hardest working non-profits. Becky has told me several stories about domestic violence and how it effects our everyday lives. Becky is continually engaging people thru events, speeches and safety classes. I look forward to helping in the future.
